After being stuck in layers of black clothing and endless snow, we’ve found ourselves in a constant state of daydreaming. We’ve been wishing for sunny palm trees, bold handbags and endless outdoor brunches. While we …
For better or for worse, spring and summer mean that it’s time for outdoor events. I have weather-sensitive hair, so I’d generally rather be indoors, but a good garden party, picnic or scenic outdoor wedding can win over even this lover of airconditioning. And naturally, after my hair, my first concern is my handbag. For warm weather, what could be better than some soft, season-appropriate flowers?
We know that no everyone is on the same budget, so we’ve picked three options – the Expressions NYC Rose Frame Clutch, 3.1 Phillip Lim Cameron Flower Clutch and Valentino Floral Applique Satin Clutch – at three different price points, all of which would go over well at an outdoor evening event in the next couple months. Valentino plies its floral, verdant trade year-round, but its spring bags are always the most fun, not to mention the most season-appropriate. Really, the only month out of the year where I’m so excited for warm weather that I’d consider carrying a bag that’s literally covered in flowers is April, which makes today the Valentino Fany Woven Flower Tote‘s lucky day.
The urge to break out the linen pants and tank tops is very strong at the moment, which makes this tote look all the more appropriate. By the time that the truly hot and sticky weather of summer rolls around, I’m sure I’ll be sick of flowers and girlishness in their entireties and just want someone to turn on the air conditioner and leave me alone. For now, though, I’d love to take a stroll through a park with this tote on my arm. (more…)
The Alexander McQueen Iris Skull Clutch is one of those bags that needs to be seen in the largest photo possible at all times; at a distance, you might mistake the detailed embroidery for printed fabric, and that would be a tragedy indeed. A bag like this can look like a hippie craft project without a very careful hand, but Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 took flowers and butterflies and someone manages to make them look beautifully transgressive. The juxtaposition of a skull with delicate flowers is something that only McQueen can pull off in a high-end way. (more…)
With at least one notable exception, Valentino’s accessories aesthetic has looked just a wee bit gassed lately. In most ways, it seems as though the brand has mined the incredible intricacy of roses and ruffles to their logical ends, and it might be time to figure out what step should be taken next. And no, it’s not studs, in case the person at Valentino who conceived the brand’s Spring 2011 accessories might be reading this.
The Valentino Nymphe Garden Tote makes me think that at least one person at the brand might have the answer, though. In the face of notoriously tight-fisted construction and the apparent desire to pack as many details into one bag as humanly possible, it’s nice to see the designers go with an entirely different variation on the flower theme. Instead of tightly wound silk roses, this bag has a lightness and airiness to it that Valentino should consider incorporating into more of its accessories. (more…)
It’s rare that I see a black clutch and think of summer, but for some reason that’s exactly what happened when I first set my eyes on the new Diane Von Furstenberg Hayworth Clutch. There’s just something about it that looks like warm weather, despite its dark color.
So what is it about the bag that’s doing it for me? The flowers, duh. You don’t see a whole lot of flowers during the winter, unless you’re looking at a Valentino bag. (more…)
I fully admit that I’ve never been the recipient of a Valentine’s Day gift from a real Valentine; this is excluding the bouquet of wildflowers my lovely father sends me every February 14. And just last week, I received a wonderful care package from my mother including a plastic lunchbox with a printed smattering of pink and white hearts. That was very interesting, but in the case that I do have a real, live Valentine this year, this is what I’d love him to get me. But keep in mind, pals, the flowers are enough. Remember that you’re talking to (erm, reading about) a girl who was massively excited by a plastic case. (more…)
