The Much-Hyped Saint Laurent Icare Maxi in Raffia is the Perfect Summer Carryall

Angelina Jolie and Elsa Hosk Agree...

The Saint Laurent Icare Maxi Shopping tote burst onto the scene when it was first spotted on Zoe Kravitz in the spring of 2022. Big bags were back in a BIG way. Later, worn by Hailey Bieber, we covered the bag later that summer, which quickly made the rounds on social media, becoming one of the most talked about bags of the year.

The Icare Maxi struck a chord amongst many fatigued by the micro bag movement, eliciting a fair amount of nostalgia for the days of the bigger the bag, the better. Arriving solely in black, the Icare was an instant hit, quickly selling out and reselling on the secondary market for even more than its (already hefty) retail price.

When a brand releases a new bag quickly adopted by consumers, it typically will capitalize on that popularity by expanding upon the line and offering new colors, sizes, or shapes. While the ICare eventually debuted in soft beige suede, it truly is a standout as is.

The fan-favorite carryall was later debuted in raffia for the summer of 2023. This version takes the massive size and on-trend shape of the original ICare and combines it with raffia, which has quickly become a staple for the warm weather months.

Recently spotted on the beautiful Elsa Hosk, who wore the bag seaside, it was later seen toted by Angelina Jolie while out and about in New York. While the Icare is large enough to carry all of your beach essentials, it is stylish enough (bearing the brand’s iconic maxi Cassandre logo) to wear around the city as well.

If you’re looking for proof, let two of our favorite bag lovers do the talking…

It would look better without this gaudy logo. Another $10 bags sold at high prices just because of a designer logo… people… wake up!

tara l

ha! too funny, but true.

Robert

I’m sorry, you obviously don’t crochet or knit, but no bag done in either of those techniques should be expected to cost what you’re saying.
Yes, 5k is A LOT of money for a raffia bag but it should be at least 5 hundred

CNews

Maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions about other people?

Felicity

“Much-hyped”? It seems that most major designer brands have released a version of this bag. A basic raffia bag with a big logo on it… that’s hardly groundbreaking at this point. Didn’t Meg just post that LOEWE bag a couple of weeks ago? Remove that big logo and it looks like a bag I could get for cheap at my local Target.

tara l

lol too funny true……………

Megs Mahoney Dusil

I did post the Loewe bag a few weeks ago and I know it isn’t for everyone! The Icare is the same – not for everyone but the summer rendition has a lot of people in love. I am a huge raffia fan, I really like summer-themed bags, so I personally like this bag a lot!

Aline

If you remove the big logo it is a quite simple knitted raffia bag (I know a little about the subject as we produce raffia bags in my company). There is no reason to pay this price for this model except the name. Margin must be so high, it’s insane 😆

Megs Mahoney Dusil

I get what you’re saying – but same can be said for a leather bag right?!

Femme

True but keep in mind your disposable income is clearly not the same as many of your readers. Not everyone is able to casually drop several thousand dollars on a raffia bag.

tara l

But people do; to me it’s a look at me, look what I’m carrying type of purse.

Let’s be serious. This website is not for people who want to save money. Their target is luxury bags and therefore they are expensive by definition. If you don’t like them, I don’t understand what you do following all the news or models of the brands that appear on this website. It’s as if you criticised Vogue magazine for bringing out expensive products….

Paris

That’s not necessarily true because this website caters to all buyers both rich and the not so rich.

tara l

True, true and true again; those that place blame, are those that just don’t have 1 or can’t afford to buy 1. real heaters.

Femme

Oh I am sorry. Am I too poor to be allowed to express my opinion?

Laura

you are projecting

daveloeweyou

I don’t say that words and you know it.

Aline

I think there are more settings in leather bags. Quality of the leather, quality of hardware, lined bag or not… Basically raffia is a very inexpensive material so to reach this $5.000 you must have an incredible design and a very special knitting technique and it does not seem to be the case with this YSL raffia bag. Only my feeling 🙂

LuxBaby

I fail to see what is so attractive about this bag. The logo kinda ruins everything I might have liked about the simple shape and materials.

Mel

Pretty but nope, sorry, not buying into this scam.

Lori

It’s a great looking bag, but the logo is too big and the price is just insane. I looked at YSL bags in Paris last December and was shocked at the quality and price…the two no longer align.

Sophia

YSL bags are bad quality in my opinion when you consider how much they cost. I would rather buy from other luxury brands.

Amazonia

Monsieur Saint Laurent would be horrified by what Kering has done to his brand. Very sad.

Alice

Just realized how the logo resembles a US dollar sign… quite appropriately!

Lisa Jago

I absolutely love this bag, large logo and all!

Katey Mokelke

Gorgeous bag but too big for me. What are we putting in there?

tara l

exactly; too big of a bag to carry around on a daily day.

Susan

Our hopes and dreams for a better world.

kadie

I’m patiently waiting for the black on black colorway. I’ve tried it twice with the gold love the bag but its just too much (for me) with gold hardware.

David Perry

Really? Are you sure? You don’t want the crew of the International Space Station to know what brand you’re wearing?

Gracie

I almost spat out my drink. Haha
