An oldie but a goodie, we’ve all got ’em!
Writing about and photographing handbags for a living has made social conversation very interesting. People are always intrigued about what it is that I do all day, but one question that I get a lot is, how did I become so interested in handbags? The truth is, I’ve been a bit of brat when it comes to handbags for a very long time. As a kid, I would cut out pictures of bags, shoes and beyond from every fashion magazine I could get my hands on and glue them together to make mock editorials. I remember discovering the Louis Vuitton Speedy before I even reached double digits, and I knew I had to have it. I usually consider my Speedy 25 to be my first premium designer bag—it was my high school graduation gift, and I wore that thing to death. I still have it, and I’ll probably never part with it. Logistically, though, I have a bag that is way older than my LV baby! For reasons unknown, I always forget that I still own a Dior Saddle Bag.
Way back in the early 2000s, Dior‘s Saddle was everywhere. It was the summer before my 8th grade year when I decided I would do anything to have one. I begged and pleaded with my mom, and when that wasn’t enough I decided I would save every penny I made working at a camp. Truth be told, I wanted the larger version with the flap closure and gold ‘CD’ hardware, but I didn’t make enough for that! Instead, I settled on the mini version, and I still remember how excited I was when my mom took me to the Dior store to purchase it! I showed up to the first day of 8th grade with that bag in tow, and despite my awkward haircut, chubby baby face and braces, I felt like the coolest kid in school!
When I graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology, on the brink of adulthood and with my budding career in fashion, I sentimentally carried that bag, and it was the last time I brought it out to play! I’ll probably never part with it, either, because it holds a special place in my heart. Dior is bringing its classic logo print back, which was particularly obvious among its Fall 2017 bags, so now just may be the time for me to bring this baby back from the archives.
So how about you, PurseBlog fam? What’s the oldest bag in your closet? Better yet, what’s the story behind it?
