Waitlist-inspiring marquee bags are great, but there’s money to be made elsewhere in a brand’s accessory inventory as well. For many designers, a small, simple crossbody, priced in the high three figures, is a great way to attract customers who dig the brand’s look but who can’t commit to $2,000 or more. The Gucci Soho Disco Bag is a prime example; not only does it fit the desires of customers of more modest means, but it fills out the casual bag collections of the brand’s big spenders and loyalists. For Proenza Schouler, the Proenza Schouler PS1 Crossbody Wallet is set to be that bag.

Proenza Schouler has danced around the idea of having exactly this bag for a while, and I’m glad this day is here. The brand has has a chain-strapped version for a while, but it lacks the full rear compartment of this bag and delicate chain straps often turn off consumers who are looking for a bag bag. This leather-strapped version is still positioned as a “crossbody wallet,” which confuses me a bit; it has interior card slots, sure, but also plenty of room for stuff you’d put in any mini bag, and terming it a “wallet” automatically devalues it for a lot of people.

Whatever you call it, this little bag, which currently comes in four colors, would be absolutely perfect for all kinds of warm-weather activities where you don’t want to have something heavy and bulky hanging off of you. Now if only we had some warm weather! Buy through Proenza Schouler for $785.

I still prefer the chain version more…

I agree…I prefer the chain strapped version. Bought it for my daughter for Christmas, and she loves the fact that it has a mirror on the inside of the flap…perfect for makeup touch-ups when out. This version doesn’t have the mirror.

I actually didn’t care for the older version. The chain didn’t look sturdy enough for me.

Cute! I’d love to have one of those.
