With a growth rate five times larger than the primary market, the secondhand market for luxury bags has changed entirely in the last decade. The resale market boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to trend upwards, making up 12 percent of market value for luxury goods.
Last year, approximately $49.3 billion in secondhand luxury goods were sold worldwide, and one of the major players in the luxury resale game, Fashionphile, has just released its 2024 Ultra-Luxury Resale Report. The report examines data from the current year and compares it to numbers from the previous one during the same time period.
While the secondary market offers accessibility in terms of availability and price for buyers, it also provides a unique chance for sellers, who can yield an excellent return on their investment. The trick is knowing what (and when) to sell, as the market constantly changes and evolves.
The good news is that it’s no longer just about holy grail brands like Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton that buyers covet.
Brands like The Row, Bottega Veneta, and Loewe continue to gain traction year over year, with popular shapes like Bottega Veneta’s Mini Jodie being one of the most-wanted bags of the resale market. Bonus points if they’re blue, which was the top color according to sales aside from neutrals.
