In the Post-Alessandro Michele Era, Revivals Are Still a Thing at Gucci

Gucci Fall 2023 is an ode to past and present

Gucci’s new Creative Director, Sabato De Sarno, will debut his first collection for Gucci in September, which means that the House is currently in a transitional phase. The Fall 2023 collection was designed by its existing creative teams, and it’s that collaborative spirit, the coming together of many minds, that inspired the Fall 2023 collection. That, and the concept of heritage. Essentially, Fall 2023 connects the creative generations of Gucci heritage with the modern day. An ode to past and present, if you will.

The Many Eras of Gucci

As for the show itself, a press release for the Fall 2023 collection described how the show was meant to walk a viewer through the many chapters of Gucci, and even those cast in the show were meant to personify periods of time from the 1990s to today. RTW from the show echos as such, with mesh tops and slinky skirts recalling the sex-fueled fashion and glamour of the 1990s and early 2000s, also known as the Tom Ford Era. More functional pieces like jeans and tailored outwear, oversized blazers, and tactile knits were seen as well, the perfect mix of the wearable and the eccentric.

The Bags of Gucci Fall 2023

As for the bags, Gucci fans will recall the oversized Horsebit Baguette from the Tom Ford Era — a rounded trapezoid chain bag that clearly is a focus this season. Models clutched the archival silhouette in a slew of iterations. From bold red leather and shearling to colorful croc and pillowy leather, Alessandro Michele, the king of archival revivals, clearly still inspires the design team. The classic Jackie remains a push this season as well, and this time the runway version honors the original shape of the Jackie but with a softened construction. It’s shown in color-blocked versions as well as GG-embossed leather.

My money is safe. Not digging these at all…..

Other than the Jackie, which is a classic, I’m not sure any of these deserve a revival.

Still loving the Jackie O. So happy, I kept mine!

…and I’m still digging my Gucci Bardot!

HRGal

doesn’t it feel like the best accomplishment when you saved a bag, that suddenly is back in style!

I watched the show. So it’s Tom Ford that’s responsible for that ubiquitous and ugly banana-shaped horsebit-bedazzled enevelope/handbag? Yuck. Even *he’s* probably wondering why. Gucci killed off The King; The King was dead. Long Live The King!

The Jackie looks good in its large, slouchy iteration.

But hey Gucci! Why no larger, slouchier versions of the fabulous Attaché bag? It was only getting started, is über cool in it’s conversion design–but deserves a larger size in the pantheon. After all, we got laptops to stow away in our crossbody’s!
