The Pieces I Love From Frye’s Melissa Collection

It's true what they say that it's all in the details, and Frye does details better than most

Ever since I was a kid, handbags have been my thing, so it’s no surprise that here I am, all these years later, doing what I do. Because of my age-old obsession, I know what I like and I know a good bag when I see one. Frye has been on my radar for its incredible collection of shoes, but these days, Frye’s handbags have taken center stage. Frye is known for its unrivaled craftsmanship and meticulous attention to deal, which is particularly evident in the details of the brand’s latest bags from The Melissa Collection.

As I’ve gotten older, my style has changed immensely, and these days I’m less about wearing a super showy outfit and more about being stylish in an understated way. I love a good pair of jeans with a sweater or a tee, finished off with a great pair of leather boots and, of course, a great handbag.

Frye Melissa Whipstitch Hobo in Slate – $348 | Frye Melissa Chelsea – $298

While it’s evident that Frye knows what to do with great leather—they’ve been in the leather business since 1863, after all—it’s true what they say that it’s all in the details. The Melissa Collection features quality leather bags with great detailing. Last month, we gave you a peek at the Melissa collection when we introduced you to the Melissa Whipstitch Mini Saddle, but the line offers so much more.

My personal favorite bag from this collection is the Melissa Whipstitch Hobo. I fell for the bag’s effortlessly cool bohemian vibe and unique whipstitch detailing.

Frye Melissa Whipstitch Hobo in Cognac – $348

The bag is crafted in antique, rugged Italian leather, which only gets better with age. Finished with whipstitching and gold hardware, it’s easy to love this bag. Offered in cognac and slate, it’s hard for me to pick just one! I’ve said this before, but being a typical New Yorker, I wear a ton of black, so if I had to choose, I’d say that the slate would be ideal to add to my collection. Add jeans and a great leather jacket, and you’ve got “effortlessly cool” down pat. With an easy-access magnetic snap closure and multiple interior pockets, this bag is extremely functional. It comes with a long, adjustable shoulder strap, which is completely removable if you’d rather wear this strictly as a hobo. Dimensions are 13 1/2” H x 13” W with a 6 1/4” strap drop. If you’re looking for a quality leather bag with great detailing for under $450, this is it.

Frye Melissa Tote in Wine – $428 | Frye Melissa Chelsea – $298

If you normally steer towards a more classic shape, Frye has got you covered with the Melissa Tote. You really can’t go wrong with a classic shape, crafted from quality Italian leather. Extremely versatile and functional, this bag would easily fit a MacBook Air or iPad in one compartment, with room to store your other essentials in the second. The interior is roomy, and with two interior compartments separated by a middle zip pocket, as well as smartphone pockets on the front interior and a zip pocket on the back interior. This bag is perfect for the on-the-go girl looking for a functional bag that doesn’t sacrifice quality or style.

Frye Melissa Tote in Redwood & Wine – $428

Made from smooth Italian leather and finished with brass hardware, this tote is refined and classic. The leather soaks up the color so well, and I love this tote in redwood, but the wine is ultimately my favorite. I love how well wine-colored bags pair with both black and brown. Dimensions are 12 1/2″ H x 13″ W with a 7 1/2″ strap drop. The Melissa Tote is a staple and can easily become your go-to day bag.

Of course, we couldn’t preview bags from Frye without taking a peak at some shoes, too. I fell hard for the Melissa Chelsea Booties. Anyone who knows me well knows that I’m a boot girl. Sure, I love wearing sandals in the summer and rock sneakers occasionally too, but I always look forward to getting new boots for fall and winter. I am also particular to a fault about the type of boots I like—ask anyone that knows me well and they’ll tell you.

The shape of these boots is classic and absolutely perfect, as is the spot that they hit on your leg—just above the ankle is just where I like it! These booties are crafted in antique, washed Italian leather and are super easy to get on, with elastic on the sides. And in New York, comfort is key, which is exactly what you’ll get from these effortlessly cool booties.
