Darlingly Delicate Iterations of Chanel Classics Mark Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel Couture Debut

A romantic love letter to the House's rich history...

Chanel Couture Matthieu Blazy Debut 15

Enter the beautifully wonderful mushroom-filled world of Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel Couture debut. Blazy, who made his runway debut for Chanel last fall at Paris Fashion Week, presented his first Couture collection earlier today at the Grand Palais, marking a major milestone for the House—Blazy is the fourth-ever designer in Chanel’s 116-year-long history.

Blazy’s Chanel looks at the House’s rich heritage through a fresh, modern lens, and for couture, he takes that sentiment one step further. Blazy transformed the Grand Palais into a magical world of pink and red mushrooms and weeping willows, a cinematic backdrop for the jaw-dropping collection that walked the runway.

A New Chapter for Chanel Couture

“Haute Couture is the very soul of Chanel – it is the foundation and the full expression of the House. These are clothes that are as much about the wearer as the designer. It’s the clothes worn that give them a true story; their own story and an emotional resonance, giving women a canvas to tell their own story.”

-Matthieu Blazy

Reinventing Chanel Signatures

Blazy’s highly anticipated debut did not disappoint with romantic takes on Chanel signatures, like a transparent silk Chanel skirt suit. That romantic opulence was present throughout the collection, and no Blazy collection is complete without his intense attention to detail.

This time, those details included everything from intricately embroidered silk to Blazy’s signature feathery fringe to transparent tweeds. Speaking of transparent, an array of Classic Chanel Flaps and 2.55 Reissues in coordinating shades of silk are delicate love letters to the House’s rich history.

Hope they do better next time…transparent suits/dresses and flimsy purses??

Anna

The mushrooms suggested more Alice in Wonderland.
I don’t see too much magic. Someone complimented this collection as “wearable” (opposite to “show off, not practical) but transparent is not practical. The purses also don’t work for me.
Also I don’t see the “it” factor all “what is it?”. But Blazy can do no wrong officially.
Identity of Blazy I see as flip flopping a bit, it’s not even bad per se but I still didn’t warm up to the new Chanel.

Blanche Devereaux

Not sure how practical any of these bags are but they look beautiful in this runway show!

Lisa

NOPE

Martha Grasso

Ditto

baggirlriri

Agree. What a boring show.

Lorelei

I’m not sure how practical an organza handbag would be, especially if you put anything with weight in it. Seems like it would distort the shape. What often puzzles me is Chanel pairing heavy shoes with light clothing which most always doesn’t match. Are they insinuating we are to wear heavy beige and black pumps with sheer floral skirts?
If you’re going to spend all those hours designing and creating the beautiful garments that is haute couture, why stop at the shoes?

Anna

Good catch. See-through and delicate would distort. I don’t see fantasy, at first he went very “out there” now it’s iffy.
The sheer – I don’t like it in such huge doses. And the shoes really don’t work. I’d also expect something more.

Sandy

IMO the couture shows are editorial and not really meant for the masses. A sheer organza handbag is certainly not meant for real use. Most of the clothing not meant for the masses to wear. It’s just pretty!

Amanda

You’re one of the very few that get it!

Dannd

To me this is Chanel saying… “How can we use the LEAST amount of fabric for the MOST amount of money?” = This.

So this runway show is definitely a feast for the eyes when most of us are in single digit degrees; however while I enjoy seeing these shows and do understand the purpose I just feel as if when we the viewers in large part support the economy of these Houses, why not design some bags for the average person on the street who needs to put something in weight in them and they are not just to see and be seen. As I age, I’m getting even more practical in that my bags need to sustain my daily lifestyle. I get that’s not everyone, but still there are those of us who have the means but it needs to be for more eye candy because at the same time we have acquired the means we are also more discerning.

Amanda

This is a couture show. Not ready to wear.

A Woman Of A Certain Age

Karl is rolling in his grave. As is Coco.
Sheer clothes and mushroom shoes.

You can’t stop progress!

Annie

Progress?!!?? 😂

Kim Fung-Toi

Yeah…no matter what you think/say/write, we can’t be stuck in the past. The world moves forward, with or without you.

I loved the freshness of this collection and the outfits + bags are a sight for sure eyes – simply gorgeous 🤩😍

Sherry

I love the mushroom heeled shoes!

NataR

I just don’t find mushrooms very glamorous. Camellias – yes. Mushrooms – no. Otherwise I liked the shoes.

Blanche Devereaux

That’s because the camellia is a well known Chanel hallmark so you are taking zero risk. The mushroom requires you to think outside of the box and become less dependent on reassuring wealth symbols.

Pip

Mushrooms are a fungi grown in manure.

Blanche Devereaux

Nature is beautiful, isnt it?

Miss_D

Nah. I hate mushrooms. lol. Also those types of bags aren’t practical for most folk. Ok if you have a couture budget but not for every day wear.

Becky

I have to echo what a lot of people are saying. They’re really cute to look at, but not something terribly usable.

Jane

Don’t like the silly mushroom shoes!

Josieverona

Love the whimsy of the mushrooms!

Kathyjazz

Wonderful to see Stephanie Cavalli on the runway! She’s gorgeous.

ClaireN4

The artistry is beautiful. But who (from a practical POV) is going to walk around in a full sheer outfit and bag… besides Hollywood?

Lorelei

Think of this as a one of a kind piece walking art installation.

Anja

This is a stupid question, but is this the first time Chanel has included bags in a couture show?

Lorelei

No, most every show will introduce a bag or jewelry for the coming season. It will take a while for these products to cycle into your local boutique, but that is how they are introduced as well.

Lorelei

My mistake. This is haute couture, not couture. Haute couture, no bags; couture bags. Haute couture is one of a kind “Art” pieces. Couture it’s for a particular high-end clientele. So in answer to your comment, yes, this is rare that they included bags, but it’s not couture, it’s haute couture.

Deliah Boerleider

I love so romantic
