Chanel’s Fall 2022 Bags Are Selling Me on Patent Leather

Shine on...

While we were busy covering everything from the new collections to the street style of fashion weeks around the world, Chanel’s Fall 2022 collection not-so-quietly hit stores. The Fall 2022 collection is all about the spirit of Chanel, celebrating the beauty of feminity. Thus, the collection oozes a certain elegance but also a strong, mysterious power. Fall is all about a rebirth of sorts, beginning again; where one season ends, another season begins.

Chanel Fall 2022

We’ll have a closer look at more styles from the brand’s new fall collection soon, but today we’re here to take a look at the pretty, patent bags of Chanel Fall 2022. Patent bags have been not-so-quietly flying on our radar for a bit, with some of the most influential brands adding patent to their lineups. As 90s-era fashion continues to trend, it’s not surprising that the shiny, chic leather has stuck around as it was a huge part of 90s fashion. This season, if Chanel has anything to say about it, patent leather is back, and it’s here to stay.

While I haven’t always considered myself a patent bag girl, with each new season that patent bags appear, I’m finding myself loving them more and more, and Chanel’s latest bags are selling me now. You can stick with the classics and opt for a 2.55 in patent leather or a Mini Flap bag, but Chanel also offers a patent leather backpack that feels anything but juvenile. The backpack lost steam a bit over the last few years, but it might just have its renaissance if Chanel has anything to say about it. Check out more of Chanel’s patent offerings this season below.

Patent leather is just an extension of their lowering of the quality bar

A Woman Of A Certain Age

and raising the price bar

Cate

Exactly! $9400.00 for a bag? Did Chanel raise their prices again on the 2.55? They are going to price themselves right out of the market because how many people are willing to pay this much? Of course, some will, but I feel that most people are hanging onto the 2.55 that they own. Or, buying other brands.

selene

They rely on people’s ignorance of quality and awe of reputation. Perfect for most of luxury consumers who want to portray image and do not care about quality. Chanel is still good quality but not at the price point they push.

Hervé

I would assume that Chanel has an army of well-trained specialists who guide their price increases according to their long-term growth strategy. They know the market and their target customer is clearly not people who think $9,000 is a meaningful part of their budget. Those can continue buying Chanel cosmetics, fragrances, and indulge in a card holder for Christmas.

Cate

I understand, but the market is already saturated with 2.55’s. It’s not that unique or special anymore. I own 3 of them as well as other Chanel bags, totes, etc. However, to give you perspective I bought mine when they were $3,600.00. I have taken exceptional care of them so they still look new. Therefore, yes $9,400.00 for the same bag I purchased, even with inflation, etc. is extraordinary and ridiculous.

Hervé

I really appreciate your perspective, and I feel similarly about Hermès products I own that have basically doubled in price in recent years, but “extraordinary and ridiculous” is of course subjective. Lots of people find the price neither extraordinary nor ridiculous and are happy to shell out that kind of money for a bag. I think of myself as middle-class. Ten or fifteen years ago, I bought 5-8 luxury bags every year. Nowadays, I buy maybe one or two. It seems to me that luxury brands are moving up market in order to reverse the pervasive effect of their rapid expansion over the past two decades. You can’t be both everywhere and exclusive, luxurious and affordable, etc.

Time will tell if this strategy will pay off.

At least it’s almost all black, color transfer is a patent leather killer and thats not an issue with black.

Does not age well.

Cher

I’m loving everything I see here!

I have a chanel mademoiselle in patent leather that discolored a bit. Never had the same problem with any of my other bags in caviar and lambskin leather. And i store them the same way in a dark area.

nikki

I have this large sharpie mark on my patent alma and I can’t even remove it anymore. Thus im not buying anything with this material. looks nice though

Milan

I love my two black patent leather bags from Chanel. They still look brand new after a decade and I use them all the time.

Passerine

There are only two bags that I’ve wanted in patent leather: a large Lady Dior in black patent and an LV Alma PM in amarante vernis (not sure if vernis counts as true patent leather but anyway…). Other than that duo, I can take it or leave it.

Fabuleux

Yes, Vernis is the same thing as patent leather. “Cuir vernis” is French for “patent leather.”

selene

Patent bags do not age well. Infact I prefer lambskin to patent even.
