Throwback Thursday: In Praise of the (Old) Celine Soft Cube Bag

A bag I once loved that never seemed to get enough love

When Phoebe Philo departed C(é)line nearly 5 years ago, the collective cries were heard around the world. After nearly a decade, the powerhouse designer who completely transformed Celine was leaving, and in her wake, she left behind an impressive legacy. Philo’s tenure at the French design House was nothing short of legendary, and it was under her watchful design direction that some of Celine’s most-iconic bags were produced.

While we wait for the debut of Phoebe Philo’s own line, from time to time, we fondly reminisce on her best bag hits. Some of these classics remain in production still to this day, like the Luggage Tote, Classic Box, and Belt Bag (though the rumor mill is constantly swirling about their discontinuation). Still, there is also a slew of more under-the-radar designs that don’t get enough of our love or attention, and today, I’m throwing it back to one of those bags.

Remembering the Céline Soft Cube Bag

The Soft Cube Bag was released in late 2017 for the fall season, and immediately it looked like it had all the makings of a hit. Simple but fashionable, in a way that only Philo and Celine could oh so consistently nail. The Soft cube bag embodied the upscale minimalism we so fondly remember Phoebe Philo for.

Crafted in supple calfskin, the Soft Cube’s square shape may have easily been described as simple, but it is actually anything but. Often showcased in contrasting colors with a cool, knotted detailing on the handle, the soft cube is equal parts functional and fashionable, with proportions ideal for the everyday. Finished with both top handles, a crossbody strap, and two interior flat pockets, the Soft Cube Bag is a no-frills and no-fuss bag that deserved far more love than it received. And to be honest, it still does!

I came across some Soft Cube bags while scouring the resale market for Philo-era Céline, and immediately I was reminded of how much I lusted after that bag, in all its stylish simplicity. Do you remember the Soft Cube bag? Do you own one?
