Hedi Slimane’s debut at Celine was met with much criticism following the departure of fashion’s darling Phoebe Philo. Maybe part of it was that, like most people, fashion folk aren’t keen on big changes, or maybe it’s because the impact that Phoebe Philo left on Celine and the fashion industry as a whole was nothing short of legendary. And while you may not like it, Hedi Slimane’s Celine is here to stay.

Nearly four years after his debut, Slimane has made his mark on the brand, tapping into a whole new generation of Celine fans and playing on fashion’s obsession with youth culture. Season after season, Slimane continues to hone in on his vision for the beloved brand, presenting a playful yet casual-cool aesthetic that is both fashionable and wearable at the same time.
Youth culture with touches of vintage references has always influenced Slimane’s work. And, as fashion as a whole has moved towards an obsession with the trends of today’s youth, Slimane’s stylistic tendencies are more relevant now than ever. Though his early collections were off to a rocky start, all that trepidation seems to have faded, and 2022 is the year of Celine.
The New, New Celine
Ahead of the upcoming (and much anticipated) Women’s Winter 22 collection, Celine icons LISA and Kaia Gerber have debuted a look at the new, new Celine. The fashion it-girls just debuted a new bag from the House, the Matelassé Monochrome Celine bag, a chain shoulder bag crafted from puffy matelassé leather with a bold CELINE Logo. Looks like something you’d find agonizing on the sidewalk near downtown within a pile of Guxxi, Charnel, and Luis Vuiton bags.
I was thinking the same especially the last time I was in New York City. A street vendor was selling his “authentic” Chanel, Dior, L.V. on a tarp on the sidewalk at a fraction of the cost. Why did I pass up these bargains? I still kick myself! 😂
The giant Celine on the front kills it for me. Is that a purse or an appliance? One of the reasons I like Celine is the subtle product branding. This reminds me of how Michael kors brands his own line but worse yuk.

Puffy leather, chunky chain, obvious branding. Yawn.
This creation is simply a poor imitation, or rendition, of the compilation of other design elements made famous by other artistic creators. Riding on their creative coattails doesn’t make him innovative; it only serves as an embarrassment to the legacy of Celine.
Not only is it boring, it doesn’t even look well-made. Looks cheap. I need to see it in person.

why does this bag remind me of the Michael kors Soho bag, he did a couple of seasons ago?? nothing wow about it, .. I’m gonna have to say next to this bag.

I love it. Love bags with texture and stitching. Reminds me of some of the Givenchy 4G bags which I also love.
I love the 70’s vibe. Just wish it had a clean, minimalist black leather strap or micro chain.
