I wish more model calls got the same publicity as the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show go-sees. I always enjoy the casual parade of new runway walkers and models vying to make their debut. (Some of VS’s bigger players won’t show their faces until it’s time for fittings.) This is a who’s who of up-and-coming models, as well as some decidedly established faces, who I’ll wager are already having a busy week at NYFW. Victoria’s Secret shows always bring together a broad mix of model faces from different corners of the industry. Some of these women are in heavy rotation in print campaigns for ready-to-wear, lingerie, or even beauty lines, but only occasionally make appearances on designer runways. But the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is an entirely different breed of fashion show. Let’s see who the contenders are this year.
Alecia Morais
Alecia Morais hails from Cape Verde and walked in the VS Fashion Show last year for the very first time. She’s carrying a black Givenchy Antigona.
Alyssa Riley
Alyssa Riley brought this tawny red Chanel Boy Bag. She’s hoping for her first stint on the VS runway.
Daniela Braga
Daniela Braga carried this red Alexander McQueen Mini Heroine Bag. Daniela has taken a turn or two on the VS runway, and is currently starring in E!’s Model Squad.
Gizele Oliveira
Brazilian model Gizele Oliveira carried a teensy black Dior Lady Dior Bag. She walked in the VS Fashion Show in Shanghai last year.
Josie Canseco
Josie Canseco looks optimistic as she heads in with the smallest bag yet—a Fendi Pouch. Does carrying a mini or micro to a job interview make you look more confident? I can’t decide.
Ophelie Guillermand
French model Ophelie Guillermand brought a beautiful black and orange bouclé Chanel Classic Flap Bag, naturally. Those pants also make quite a statement.
Sara Witt
Slovakian model Sara Witt brought a gorgeous black Dior Saddle Bag, accessorized with the Dior Bag Strap. She is certainly the first VS hopeful I’ve seen sporting an elastic waistband.
Winnie Harlow
Finally, here’s Winnie Harlow, submitting her bid for Angel status. She’s carrying a quilted Dior Dioraddict Bag.
I hate being that person. I’m all for battling against obesity but this is literally the reason for why we have a skewed beauty standards and people with eating disorder.
It is unhealthy for someone to be underweight or overweight. However, your comment is unwarranted as none of the models pictured above look remotely underweight or unhealthy. They are all toned sexy slim girls and there is nothing wrong with that.
Yet all the desired and healthy girls supposed to look like that. It’s about beauty and not health. That’s my point.
I do feel like some people think that this is the default body type and everyone who doesn’t look like that is probably eating junk food or too many calories, when some people are naturally shorter, pear-, apple- or otherwise shaped and won’t look like a model no matter how healthy they eat and live.
You can’t tell if a person is healthy just by looking at them.
I’m going to have to disagree with you there. The problem is that there isn’t the fact that they exist, but that they’re lauded with minimal discussion of the unrealistic effort their bodies take. Read some of the craziness these girls do before the show. Let’s not promote their obsession with their bodies at this time of their life as healthy.
I did hear about the nothing-but-liquid diet these models put themselves through.
These models used to carry huge bags and at least it looked like they needed much to maintain THE looks. Haha
Never seen the VS fashion show and don’t intend to. I’ve seen some stills while passing the shops in malls and it looks so tacky and tasteless. The lingerie in general is slutty – hence PASSING the shop and not entering.
Sure, some lingerie can be overtly more revealing or sexual, but that’s because that’s what they’re meant to be worn for, sex. Calling it “slutty” is ridiculous. The term “slut” and “slutty” are sexist slurs to begin with and people should stop using the word..
Thank you for your opinion. I will continue to use the term “slutty” when it’s the most suitable adjective.
It is mostly the ridiculous looking ‘wings’ and the buttcheeks in display. And don’t get me started on all the feathers they use on those wings. Many of the feathers look like they come from some exotic birds. I have no idea how they are acquired, or if they subjected the birds through any pain.
How about we comment on BAGS since this is a BAG blog not a Women’s Health Blog?
I’m tired of seeing people commenting on how people’s grass looks behind a picture of a Birkin or how ugly someone’s counter top is when showing a Dior bag or that such and such person is a horrible being and shouldn’t be on here showing off their bags. Ugh.
Anyway, definitely have my eye on a Diorever or Diorama or even a DiorAddict for the upcoming holidays. I lack quilted bags in my collection.
I can understand why you would object to people making negative comments about other people in photos. But I don’t understand how you can separate bags from women’s health when bags are part of fashion. Fashion and beauty ideals have a large impact on the public. Also, this blog is centered on bags, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a human element here. This blog pulls together a community around bags. If we only discussed bags then there would be no posts on anything else. Like Meg’s little one (soon to be two).
I agree Bryan. Still loving the Antigona – has become a real classic IMHO ?
Bag is art. Art has history. History involves politics. If you think bags are just quilted objects then you are either extremely uneducated or simple minded.
Timothy thats a bit of a reach……
My point is that things are not exactly linear. You can’t extract meaning behind things. Like bag isn’t just a bag or else a birkin would be the same as a plastic bag. Birkin ties to brand, ties to SES, ties to craftsmanship. No, a birkin is not just a tote with a lock in the front. It was famous because the person that is/was wearing it. They chose photos of these models for a reason. You don’t see my mom carrying her bag on purseblog.
Also wouldn’t assuming someone is “simple minded” by one comment on a purse blog be…. simple minded???????
Save the politics for debate class. I come here to get my mind away from the circus that is America and it’s “leader”. I come here to look at bags and fashion. If I wanted politics, I’d go put on my MAGA hat and watch some fake news….
Well you are more than welcome to do what you want to do. The nice thing about a forum is that you can talk about what you wanna talk about and I can talk about what I feel like it is important. Thank god you don’t have to do what I tell you to do or vice versa. So you are more than welcome to put on whatever and watch whatever news. Yes I hear you loud and clear about leaving “politics” off this forum and I disagree. Just like I don’t think bags are just bags to me and I can continue to discuss what I feel like it is important.
Timothy, well said. Nice argumentation.
Love the beauty, love the fashion, love the bags.
Alecia Morais is perfection.
Gizele’s contrasting textures seem to work well together -snake print Dior bag, velvet shorts, chain strap belt, leather boots…
I liked the Victoria’s Secret fashion show minus the pointing fingers and air kisses and all that. That being said 2003 was the best one in my opinion and I didn’t care about it since Gisele left.
