Lady Gaga Has Been All Over NYC Lately with a Whole Slew of Great Designer Bags

She may be known for her outlandish personal style, but Lady Gaga's taste in bags is more conventional than you might think

It’s hard to believe you could describe anything about Lady Gaga‘s look as “conventional,” but when I starting looking over the bags she’s been carrying during a recent high-profile stint in New York City, that’s exactly the word that came to mind. Other words include: sophisticated, tailored, subtle. Who would have thought?

Lately, the bags Gaga has been carrying have been mostly structured, mostly black and mostly chosen, seemingly, to add a bit of decidedly expensive and luxurious punctuation to some otherwise wild looks. Several of the most traditional pieces she has carried over and over, and we all know that Gaga is not one to repeat a look. In that, Gaga demonstrates the power of the handbag: it can change the mood of an entire outfit in an instant. Check out some of the highlights below.

Alaïa Mini Studded Tote
$1,960 via Saks

As a handbag brand, Alaïa makes a lot of sense for Lady Gaga—its bags are a bit under the average celebrity fashion radar and they have a sense of drama that suits her style, but they’re never loud enough to overshadow everything else that’s always going on with her look.

Delvaux Brillant Bag
$6,400 via Barneys

Delvaux also typifies Lady Gaga’s taste in bags: under-the-radar to everyone but fashion folks, yet still tightly tailored and with a sense of classicism that her bag choices tend to have.

Fendi Micro Double Baguette Bag
$2,190 via farfetch.com

Of all the bags we spotted Gaga with lately, this Fendi one surprised me the most—she tends to choose clothes that aren’t already easy to associate with a designer (at least in part, I’m guessing, because it then becomes easier to most closely associate them with her and her unique sense of style), so logo pieces are usually pretty scarce in her looks.

This piece is much closer to the mark—structured and somewhat anonymous. So much so that we’re not sure who made it.

Gabriela Hearst Nina Bag

This piece is an even better return to form—Gabriela Hearst bags are only well known among hardcore fashion people, and the brand has been very selective about which famous people receive bags, opting generally for stars known for their creative prowess than simply their notoriety.

When I was looking at thumbnails to choose photos for this post, it looked like Gaga might be carrying an Hermès Kelly here, but she’s not—it’s some other kind of similar top handle bag, finished in glossy lizard.

Mark Cross Grace Box Bag
$2,395 via Moda Operandi

Another tightly tailored bag that’s well known to fashion fans but probably anonymous to average fans.

I’m fairly sure this is one of Mark Cross‘s bags too, but it has a special little detail that has given me pause: the golden metal handle.
