2019 Met Gala Guests Camp It Up With Bags from Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Judith Leiber

Camp, but make it fashion

Some of the annual Met Gala themes are a little more obtuse than others. “Camp” inspired the true showmen in this celeb set—Gaga, Cardi B, Billy Porter, Katy Perry, etc.–to go all out. Candelabras, hamburgers, headdresses with fried eggs on them, stripteases, feathers, special effects, vagina dresses, Cleopatra—that was all unarguably camp. But a majority of guests played it safe with looks that simply evoked a less trendy past. “Unfashionable designer vintage looks” might as well have been the theme. But when Anna Wintour has decided the theme is camp, this is not the time for subtlety and elegance. If camp isn’t your bag, why not save your $35,000 for next year? And speaking of bags, they were all fairly classy. So many Judith Leibers on the red carpet, and yet so few thought to bring anything gloriously campy like the Judith Leiber Couture Hamburger Clutch? Missed opportunity.

Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung wore a custom head-to-toe look (and carried a matching handbag) from her own Alexa Chung line.

Laura Love

Singer/songwriter Laura Love paired a black velvet Gucci Broadway Bag with a somewhat thematically appropriate pink frock from Rodarte.

Sophie Turner

Newlyweds Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas showed up in custom Louis Vuitton. Sophie’s bag is a custom matching sequined Louis Vuitton Dauphine Bag.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a custom ostrich feather-accented Oscar de la Renta gown. Her bag is presumably Oscar de la Renta as well.

Rita Ora

Rita Ora returned to the Met Ball once again with a Jimmy Choo Ciggy Clutch. Details about who actually made her gown are not available, but she did spend a goodly amount of time on the red carpet with her pal Marc Jacobs.

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly, a long-time face for Louis Vuitton, wore Louis Vuitton, of course, and carried a custom Louis Vuitton Petite Malle Bag.

Gisele Bundchen

We don’t see a terrible amount of Gisele Bundchen here on PurseBlog, but lo, here she is carrying a a pink velvet Dior Saddle Bag as she strolls into the gala with Tom. Her gown is also Dior.

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes donned a feathery, ethereal custom Zac Posen gown and carried a shimmering Tyler Ellis Clutch.

Zendaya

Zendaya’s ensemble was one of the more buzzworthy looks of the evening. The color-changing Cinderella-style gown was designed by Tommy Hilfiger. Zendaya’s dainty bag is a Judith Leiber Couture Clutch.

Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller attended the 2019 Met Gala in a long-sleeved, printed Paco Rabanne gown that was part of their Fall/Winter 2019-20 collection. Her bag is a cute (and slightly campy) Judith Leiber Couture Cat Clutch.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander was also dressed by Louis Vuitton, and she carried a Louis Vuitton UFO Bag aka a Toupie Bag, which is one of their campier styles for everyday.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek wore a delicately embroidered custom creation from Gucci, and paired it with a metallic Gucci Envelope Clutch with crystal detailing.

Jennifer Lopez

J-Lo wore this stunning, 70s throwback Versace gown and paired it with one of the more traditional looking Judith Leiber Couture Clutches on this year’s red carpet.

Lady Gaga

Finally, as you’ve definitely heard by now, Lady Gaga truly took this year’s theme to heart. Her 2019 Met Gala red carpet walk was a true event that involved four lightning-fast wardrobe changes. Here she is posing with a Judith Leiber Couture Call Me Brick Phone Clutch Bag shortly before stripping down to her skivvies.
