Here’s What Bag Your Favorite Sex and the City Character Would Carry in 2021

Keep calm and Carrie on, a reboot is coming and these are the bags we'd love to see on-screen

Sex and the City aired on HBO from 1998 to 2004 and it is not at all over the top to say that the series had a profound affect on pop culture. The show eventually spawned two movies and a spin-off series, The Carrie Diaries, before laying its proverbial head to rest…or so we thought. While chatter of a 3rd movie or a return to the small screen would make headlines every now and again, HBO decided to indulge fans around the world in their wild dreams when the network officially announced an HBO Max reboot last week. According to Variety the 10-episode series will be called And just like that and is set to begin filming this spring.

The fashion on Sex and the City was essentially the fifth lead in the show, taking center stage and breaking through norms. The outfits were bold, groundbreaking and extra in a way that was far ahead of its time. The bags were an integral part of each character’s wardrobes too, with Carrie known to wear trendy items like the iconic Fendi Baguette and monogrammed Gucci belt bag and even the more classic and understated Charlotte surprised fans with a Louis Vuitton x Murakami Papillon bag in the final season of the show. Now, 16 years later many of our favorites are relevant once again but the handbag world has also been graced with some new favorites too. Below we’re taking a look at the bags we’d love to see grace our screens draped on the arms of our favorite SATC characters.

Carrie

A carrier of many iconic bags such as the Dior Saddle Bag, the Fendi Baguette, and more novelty purses than we’d like to remember, Carrie’s style was the trendiest of the group, which is why it’s quite ironic that her purse picks are the most relevant in present day. A lover of it-bags and hard to track down purses, in 2021 Carrie would be enamored by the hype of all Bottega Veneta everything, though she’d still dig deep into the archives of her closet to break out a beloved Baguette. After all, what would Sex and the City be without one?

Fendi Baguette ($1,790)

Bottega Veneta the Mini BV Jodie ($1,790)

Charlotte

While Charlotte’s often more classic looks and WASP-y carries were often overlooked beside BFF’s Samantha and Carrie’s eye-catching fashion choices, her style is arguably the most enviable of all. While Carrie’s trendier picks have gone in and out of fashion, Charlotte’s looks were and are timeless—both then, now, and all of the years in between. Spotted carrying some of the handbag world’s most classic bags like the Lady Dior and other structured carries, in 2021 the former Ms. York would love Prada’s sleek, yet structured Cleo Bag in the girliest Pink hue and Fendi’s iconic Peekaboo.

Prada Cleo Bag ($1,990)

Fendi Peekaboo ($6,500)

Miranda

Miranda was (and is) a style icon in her own right. Balancing her fashion choices with a professional career is not always easy, and though Miranda did make a few questionable fashion choices (but let’s be honest, they all did at one point or another), Brady’s mom managed to mix fashion with function while staying true to her own personal style. While some of the best Miranda looks came out of the SATC movies and not the series, fans were blessed with quite a style evolution. Present-day Miranda would adore the powerful, yet useable Loewe Leather tote for her 9-5 and the sleek Mark Cross Madeline Lady Bag after dark.

Loewe Cushion Large Grained-Leather Tote ($1,950)

Mark Cross Madeline Lady Bag ($2,450)

Samantha

Unfortunately for the Samanthas of the world, Kim Cattrall will not be appearing in the SATC reboot but we still can’t help but picture what the powerhouse PR exec would carry in 2021. Samantha famously got caught with a fake Fendi, and though the Baguette is back, by 2021 Samantha would be seen mingling around an industry party with a Bottega Veneta The Pouch tucked under arm. However one thing would remain the same—the bag’s bold, gold hue to match Samantha’s unapologetically ostentatious style. On the regular though, she’d accessorize her pink power suit with the latest and greatest from Chanel, the 19 Bag.

Bottega Veneta The Pouch ($2,500)

Chanel 19 Medium Flap Bag ($6,150)

Are you re-boot ready? Which bags do you think will appear on the show?

For some reason, I never found SATC’s bags to be that interesting (that includes the versions of the Baguette and Saddle bags) and I just think these are a perfect match! You made my day, Kaitlin!

Gawd, I wish they’d put this show to sleep already! The show was magical and original in the 90s-00s, and they should have left it there. The movies were a stretch. The 2nd Movie was basically one long marketing advertisement for Abu Dhabi! And if they think a new show without Samantha will make sense, then they really don’t know their audience. The SATC formula is so over (to quote the show O-V-E-E-R)! Three over-privileged white women moaning about sex, or their lack of it, seems so outdated in a modern world dealing with Covid19.
HBO should quit milking this old cow and let her rest in peace already!

I kinda agree – I enjoyed the show and the first movie was okay but the second movie was a disaster – the characters felt very disconnected from the show! this article is kind of interesting and it will be fun to see what bags the ladies carry ?

I totally agree with you! I loved the show during its original run on HBO but both movies were mediocre (the second one was plainly embarrassing) and the show makes me cringe today. The world has changed! This show didn’t need to be rebooted.

Agreed. The show has not aged well, particularly its portrayal of an almost all white NYC. Was anyone really checking on Carrie? Because I can tell you easily what she would be doing in the current world. Carrie would have ditched NYC for the Hamptons during COVID and posted tone deaf pictures, worn an ineffective mask that matched her outfit, and probably bitched that someone called her a Karen while entirely missing the fact that she did something to deserve the name.

I never saw the show but I agree, why is it being resurrected?

Ouch! The movies were never made up to the standards of the actual show IMO. I think if done correctly the reboot could be a fun watch. I can’t wait to see the fashion!

fun picks! All of them make sense but not the Chanel 19-that is neither fashion forward no aesthetically pleasing. It belongs in the dust ridden closets of fashion grandmas 🙂

“Dust ridden closets of fashion grandma’s”? I’m a “Nana” and don’t meet this ridiculous ageist stereotype! Don’t assume that older women lack class because we have years of experience and impressive collections.

This show has aged so poorly. Four cis privileged white women obsessed with shoes, money, and men. It’s laughable in 2021. ???

Not “always”. “He”(?) has also left kind, supportive and well meaning messages. There is a balance and it shouldn’t be dismissed or ignored.

Charlotte was the only one who grew up privileged. The other three women became successful on their own and could spend their time and money any way they want. Sounds pretty modern to me! I do think that if the show were made today, they would/should have a more diverse cast. Anyway, I think this is just supposed be a fun post about purses.

… They all grew up privileged: white, cis, and straight.

Look, these three were privileged for sure, but not just for the reasons you list there. Please don’t be “that” person that says nobody white cishet can have had a difficult life, it just antagonizes people against LGQBTA+. Just like how I’m brown queer non-binary privileged as heck (what’s up being born to rich liberal family with trans folk already in it), a white cishet person can most definitely experience a non-privileged life.

Anyway this IS a fun post about purses! I disagree about the purse choices mostly (the BV clutch is way more Carrie!), but interesting to think about what they’d wear to be fashion-forward in 2021 vs the 90’s…

Recognizing the privilege of being white, cisgender, and heterosexual does not negate other hardships that we all experience in this world. You’re completely missing the point. ?

You are missing the point, Justice. This is a fun post about a show known for its fashion. You are going on a rant about how the show hasn’t aged well because white, cis-gendered women like to talk about dating – which is the point of the show as Carrie is a writer with a column about dating in NYC. The show begins and ends with Carrie narrating her column. White, cis women still exist in 2021. The show had two semi-regular gay characters and an interracial romance. But again, we’re all here to talk about handbags – hence the name PurseBlog.

Honestly, I would be more thrilled if they reboot Desperate Housewives. Fun bags though.

Wow! These replies are so harsh! This is suppose to be a purse forum not “ let’s trash middle aged white women for portraying white women”. Will miss Samantha. Hope they bring back some of the male characters. Would love to see more Chanel!

I feel that Charlotte would carry a Lady Dior bag due to the low functionality of the bag which makes it more suitable for leisurely lifestyles/evening wear and because she seems like someone who would have idolized Princess Diana.

Samantha’s Chanel should definitely be replaced by a Birkin (duh!). No explanation necessary.

Carrie would carry the Bottega Veneta pouch with the big chunky gold-toned chain shoulder strap.

I don’t mind Miranda’s picks, but I would maybe have chosen a Tod’s bag instead of the Mark Cross.

I agree that this rebooting this show makes no sense. The second movie with Carrie and Big living in a tiny apartment (with all his money) and Carrie whining at her middle aged husband for not wanting to go club hopping every night? I do still enjoy the reruns and the styles may be dated and the technology, the relationship problems….non-committal men etc are still relevant. Every show does not have to include transgender and a certain amount of non-white people to check a box. SATC was always gay positive before the rest of the world caught up.
