Louise Trotter is among an elite group—she’s one of the few female creative directors in the male-dominated world of luxury fashion. Trotter, who presented her sophomore collection for Bottega Veneta yesterday in Milan, continues to prove her power while cementing her vision for the storied Italian House—and it is a beautiful one.
This season, Trotter was inspired by the idea of intimacy and its relationship to clothing. Our clothes, in many ways, are a form of protection, an outer layer, and in many ways a shield. The sentiment is a poignant one, especially in today’s world.
Still, the collection is an exploration of beauty, connecting the garments to the person who wears them and to those who came before. Trotter took inspiration from nostalgia, but not in the traditional sense we’ve seen time and time again. Rather, the conversation between the past and the present was rooted in precious items passed along—a parent’s old shoe or a nonna’s purse.
Intrecciato, Nostalgia, and Statement Outerwear Define the Season
Ready-to-wear studies these intimacies, and what started off as stark and structured in the form of tailored separates, bold knitwear, and sleek trenches gave way to statement jackets—so many statement jackets!
From feathers and fringe to architectural pleating, exaggerated leather, and more—Trotter just declared Fall 2026 as the season of the It-coat. Statement details extend to other pieces as well—a textured trouser or a feathered dress—the joy of dressing up is ever-apparent here.
The Bags of Bottega Veneta Fall 2026
The bags, overall, were beautiful but mostly simple, which was a nice complement to the ready-to-wear. Trotter continued her study of Intrecciato, which acted as an accent on some bags while most were fully woven. Big bags continued to reign, though smaller shapes like the lady bags we saw last season and top-handle bowlers offered a nice mix.
The idea of the statement clutch also made an appearance this season—some were exotic, while others were intrecciato. Elsewhere, a tasseled bucket bag was shown throughout, many times a play on the look it was paired with—whether in a matching fabrication or coordinating textures.
