Amanda versus Large Greek

They say that there’s nothing new under the sun, and from time to time, as Megs & Co. are demonstrating today, this adage holds true in the handbag world as well. When faced with the need to blend practicality and style, how many different things can you really make?
So I present to you two bags: the Marc Jacobs Patchwork Amanda and the Versace Large Greek Key Shoulder Bag. Both are black patent leather, both have chain straps, both are kind of square and boxy, and both have large quilting over most of the bag. The styling is slightly different - Versace, naturally, makes everything in their line to be flashy and obvious, with their Greek motif forming the lines between the quilts. The Marc Jacobs bag is more fashionista friendly with more subtle styling and branding.
To me, the choice between these two is a no-brainer, and not just because the winner shares my name. The Marc Jacobs Amanda is much more elegant in its details and wearable in my wardrobe, and although not a complete original (Chanel did do pleats and chain straps first, after all), it’s still much preferable to its uninspired Versace cousin.

marc jacobs. i don’t think it is a chanel rip off, rather, a clever homage to the iconic chain and quilting. the oversized quilting distinguishes it completely from chanel while giving it that mj tongue-in-cheek flair.
Out of the two I prefer MJ, but I still much love Chanel when it comes to chain and quilting!!

I feel the same about these bags as I did of the first competing pair of bags above=dislike.
As a real greek myself I am partial to the Versace motif…granted all Versace handbags make a loud statement but this particular one I find quite subdued. It looks practical, light, easy to carry, and chic. So although I am a huge fan of Marc Jacobs - and all my clients at starbags.gr have praised his designs - I wouldn’t knock this Versace number.

I think this is the only Versace bag I’ve seen that I actually kinda like! Though it’s still a no go for me. There’s something about the straps that they didn’t get right (shocker!), and it makes the bag look more cheezy IMO. I think it would look a lot better with bigger ones given the depth of this bag. Ironic, as Versace is a company known for their outlandish stuff, trying to make a chic bag, and the one thing they should have made bigger they didn’t.
