There's no official measure to test whether or not something has officially become a trend, but the unofficial standard that I use goes something like this: When three different pieces from three different brands repeat the same element, and those pieces are all available at roughly the same time, it's a pretty good bet that more of the same is on the way from other brands and at other price points. Ladies and gents, my spidey sense is tingling over holograms. And it's not just the whole Tupac-at-Coachella thing.
A couple of weeks ago, we brought you the exciting news that Proenza Schouler will be including several holographic leather PS11's in its upcoming Resort 2013 collection. Not long after, Sigerson Morrison's holographic-trimmed suede sandals popped up on Moda Operandi for resort pre-order. Finally, Hussein Chalayan's holographic leggings came in stock at Net-a-Porter and swiftly sold out before they even made it off the New Arrivals page. That's three, even if you don't count the Theyskens' Theory hologram pants and bags from Spring 2012, and that's all the proof I need. Want to get ahead of the trend? We have some suggestions after the jump, plus the purchase information for the items above.
The Hussein Chalayan Holographic Leggings quickly sold out at Net-a-Porter for $965 after their debut last week, but what I'm really anticipating is the release of the Fall 2012 collection's matching holo oxfords.
If you'd rather do holograms as a trim instead of a focal point, the Sigerson Morrison Metallic Corista Pumps are more demure than a full holo legging. $450 for pre-order via Moda Operandi.
Also on the demure side are these Miu Miu Holographic Sequin Pumps, which, at first look, are simply silver. Look closer and you'll see a pale color shift that fits perfectly with the current pastels trend and the upcoming hologram trend. They're on sale now via Net-a-Porter for $445.
Not ready to go whole hog and spend hundreds of dollars for a trend that could potentially look tacky very quickly? Grab some holographic nail polish, like the Nails Inc Special Effects Electric Lane Holographic Glitter Top Coat, which is $10 via Sephora. Just be prepared to look at your nails all day - I've had a holo glitter gel mani for about a week and it's absolutely mesmerizing.
If you don't dig a silver-based holo, fret not. Proenza's PS11 will come in several colors, and this ASOS Revive Holographic Sequin Dress is a beautiful take on bronze. $108.53 via ASOS.
