Bottega Veneta Settantasei Ostrich Bag
May 27th, 2009 / Posted in Bottega Veneta Handbags, Exotics, Satchels by Amanda Mull.It always confuses me when a designer takes an exotic skin, which is already a work of art in and of itself, and tries to do something intricate with it (usually something that involves cutting it into tiny pieces, either for weaving or for a laser-cut design). It seems like…well, it seems like a bit of a waste of a beautiful skin. I’ve got similar concerns with the Bottega Veneta Settantasei Ostrich Bag, which uses ostrich hide instead of traditional leather to make the signature Bottega Veneta intrecciato weave.
BV does better here than most do, though, because the copper finish combined with the ultra-textured feel of the bag give it a simultaneous glimmer and roughness that might not be achievable with regular, smooth leather. The finish is honestly quite cool, but I can’t help shake the feeling that exotic skins come with an inherent design to them and some of their charm is lost when they’re too heavily deconstructed. Plus, if I’m going to pay a premium for an exotic, I want that skin to be as intact as possible for maximum exotic effect. When you combine the high price of this bag with the way the skin was used, I’m not sure it’s worth it. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $7350.
i like!!the first bottega veneta handbag i can actually stand,don’t really like their woven designs. love the shape and the rugged shiney-ness.But its way too pricey,dont think its worth it.
It’s gorgeous, but for nearly $8k, I’d opt for a exotic Birkin. It looks very fragile, too.
I think they cheapened it. You cannot tell it is an exotic at all.
I like it. I find regular exotics a bit creepy, the weaving alleviates that a little.
I never crtiticize BV generally as i love their clean cut designs but with this bag the ostrich does get a bit lost. I agree with 19yrslater that exotics can be creepy but if im gonna pay 8k for an exotic i damn well want it to show.

When you double the skins you double the value. Not everybody is supposed to get this. Thats why BV is know for it’s lux personal products. I personally own over 150 designer bags including Berkins. When you go BV you aren’t looking for the publics approval. It’s the educated eye that understands and comments. It’s about you and your needs not the common folk.
