Fendi DIY Baguette Bag

I think it’s important to look at this bag for exactly what it is: a novelty item, designed to get attention and make people talk, and also a good collectible for those that love Fendi and want to add something really unique to their stash. Evaluating it like a regular bag is sort of besides the point.

The Fendi DIY Baguette Bag is exactly what it sounds like – it’s a woven, unfinished Fendi Baguette with everything you need to embroider your own bag. It’s sort of an opportunity to have your own one-of-a-kind designer bag, which is kind of cool, when you think of it that way.

But realistically, it’s a bag that’s unfinished and sold to the consumer in parts, which is a little weird. Or maybe genius? I suppose it might be genius if, uh, you know how to embroider. Which I don’t. But it comes with everything I would need to get started – multicolor thread, needles, thimbles. It doesn’t come with a “How to Make Your Own Fendi Bag for the Low, Low price of $995″ instructional DVD, but maybe next season’s version will. Something to think about if you’re listening, Fendi. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $995.

I agree that it is only a great idea if you can embroider… otherwise you are stuck with an unfinished bag or a bag that you messed up. (fb)

  And what’s the point of buying a designer handbag if you have to finish the product. This idea would be better if it came from Coach or Dooney and Burke. But, even then… I don’t think I would pay the money to design my own handbag.

Seems like a lot for something you have to make yourself. I wouldn’t even know where to begin (even if I knew how to embroider, which I also do not). Interesting concept, but I’m not sure how many people would really take this on. That said, I’d love to see what some really artsy and talented people (with embroidery skill and an extra $995) come up with. (fb)

i’m a huge fendi fan but honestly, but i don’t think alot of people will have time for this. if i spend that much on a bag i want it fully finished and ready to wear. there are lots of creative ways to customize your designer bags if you really wanted to. stick a broch on it or something, or sparkling things. point being i dont think you need a blank canvas for it. this just seems like a useless idea. i mean look at the bag, it’s just ugly. you would have to be a real creative genius to make those colored threads turn the bag into a head turning piece.

It could be fun… I like art and crafts that I can show off. But for the price, HellNO!! Come on now Fendi, the threads look soo “blaa”…. Probably not even enough to finish the project… and $1,000. Is this supposed to be a great price?? Good idea, but just not workable for the majority. Only those that like the particular threads and have the talent to pull it off… and let’s not forget, the $$$, only they will benefit and have a gorgeous, orginal bag….. (fb)

If you are a crafter it could be cool, but the crafters I know shop at Joann and their goal is to make something cute and inexpensive.

It kind of seems like this is a $1000 embroidery kit. And its almost insulting.

A friend recently got this and her bag now looks reallly cool. She had the flag of our country and many stop her to ask if its okay to take pics. And lets be honest, a 3 digit number for a designer bag this time and age, even unfinished, isnt alot..

Didn’t they have a white baguette a couple of years ago that came with markers that you could use to decorate it yourself? I thought that was pretty cool, if potentially disastrous. This one is pretty over-the-top expensive, though. (fb)

The one that came with the markers was a much better idea – everyone knows how to use a marker, as Lady Gaga showed us on her Birkin. This is definitely for the few gifted people with all that creativity and crafting skills, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to me like those people with all of their DIY skills would want to spend their money on an overpriced bag that’s not nearly as creative as it could be. by the way this would be worth 1000$ if say you buy the bag online, design the embroidery and they do it for you, ala LV mon monogram… but LV doesnt expect you to paint your own bag and fendi is out of its mind for expecting people to embroider their own bags…

Thats so funny Fendi has run out of decent ideas for bags and they just send u an unmade one to fix it yourself. HAHAHAHAHAHA and for $1000????? I really wanna meet whoever came up with that idea. Soon they will be sending us pieces of cloth with a Gucci label and you sew them yourself! Thats your job Fendi…I do my job to make the money to pay for my handbags. If i wanna sit in the evenings and sew Im not paying you 1000 for the canvas and for taking credit for my creation.

ok, as a needle-pointer and artist and bag lover and weaver, this is wayyyy too much $$ for a kit! half the price would have been too expensive, but understandable. and with no patterns or instructions or lining to cover the back of your work??? fendi ain’t stupid— they have lisio weave their velvets for chrissakes. i feel like the baguette’s shape is overplayed, yet appropriate though considering how many different fabric treatments they’ve featured it in in the past. i really think was conceived as a novelty item and not an actual craft kit. they could have made it fabulous: 18k plated gold needle with a fendi logo or something. is that floss even silk? an assortment of fendi patterns to needle point. they really could have made this amazing, but it falls short of being anything more than an over-priced gimmick, which saddens me because i really get excited when designers do things like this.

I think it is a great idea and maybe more of a collectors edition item. I know how to embroider but I would be so scared to practice a design or even come up with a design that I would feel would be worthy of an almost 1000 price tag. I think it is bizarre that Fendi makes so much money off the bag, but does none of the work. I think next year you spend 2000 and a Fendi designer helps you design an embroidered clutch just for you and they do all the work, but you both collaborate on the design. I could see then it being a success. (fb)
