In fashion, sometimes the worst thing you can say about a design is that it’s…fine. At least when a bag is cosmically awful, the designers tried a little bit of something. A chance was taken, a personality was exposed, and even if those kinds of adventures don’t always work out, it’s always encouraging to see a design who’s willing to gamble.

The Gucci Madison Ostrich Tote isn’t a bad bag by any stretch of imagination. I wouldn’t hesitate to carry it and I’d be proud to own it if it somehow came to be mine without any money changing hands, but I couldn’t imagine swiping a card to make this particular purse mine. The design doesn’t have enough visual interest to be eye-catching and the lines aren’t sharp enough to call it minimalist. It’s just…fine. And “fine” isn’t worth four grand.

Ostrich skin is an underused exotic to be sure, and no matter how noncommittal and bland it can be, tan is a useful color to have around. If the rest of the Gucci spring pre-orders that just popped up across the internet had been exciting and interesting, perhaps I’d feel more excitement about this bag. Unfortunately, they’re almost all tan, and they’re all…fine. In fact, this ostrich bag is the most exciting of the bunch, which is faint praise if I’ve ever given it. At least it’s lined in leather. Buy through Saks for $3900.

I have seen this IRL and it is truly exquisite however I actually preffer the off-white version with croc trim and is ‘only’ $1,150

I do not like anything about this bag – I am neither a fan of Ostrich skin nor Gucci. And while I too think a tan bag is useful, I wear black 95% of the time so I would find it foolish to invest almost $4000 in this kind of a bag. On a different note, it seems that for Spring 2011, Gucci is focusing more on leather and not on their monogram print, a change I will gladly welcome!

The bag looks very nice, but I don’t see much “design” on it. It’s just a plain normal tote.

I agree with the comments made, plus the handles look rather short for ease of getting the bag on to your shoulder. It seems like there could have been more thought by such a large design company before they debuted the bag. But, I am a huge fan of ostrich for lifetime purchases such as this.

Its just ‘nice’. And nice is not a word for me and nice is not worth 4k.

It looks like one of those SWAG bags. I actually have one that looks exactly the same except that mine is red and made of polyester.

I absoulutely love tan and this is wonderful!

    Simple, classy, understated!

I don’t liek the bag for a lot of motivations…. First of all it seems too much “old” and hasn’t any kind of design research. Furthermore the handle is “Not right” for this bag (terrible to put closed two different kinds of browns…)…In the end I can accpet this bag from an ancient factory put int he center of Milan but not from a cosmopolitan, and innovative, brand as Gucci is!

I am not a fan of ostrich so that was a turn off.
I have never been a real fan of Gucci in the handbag department. The only thing that I could forsee myself buying from Gucci is a bag for my husband.

I love ostrich skin for its superb suppleness and longevity. And I usually like timeless Gucci designs. But not this one. I think it misses on character and its proportions are a bit off. I agree with edoardo that the handles are “not right” – they should be longer and/or heftier, to keep the balance in check. So, for me it’s a miss.

It’s ostrich and tan, which basically means that I would rarely use it even if I did get it for free.

  • Julie

I usually despise Gucci but I actually like this. A lot. I am very surprised it’s Gucci. Worth $4000? No way. Give me Hermes anyday (but probably not in ostrich!)

  • Stylista

I never liked ostrich skin. Much prefer leather. The colour is nice, but a bit dull.

If this is the same as in the ad in Elle this month, it is HUGE! I was shocked.

I love, love, love Ostrich leather. It’s prettier and far easier to take care of in comparison to other exotic skins like Python or crocodile/alligator. I love Gucci in general but I do agree that this particular bag could have been so much more. However, for Gucci placing the design, when dealing with ostrich skin it’s not necessary to over focus on an intricate design as you want to show as much of the beautiful natural ostrich pattern as possible.
However, the bag’s basic shape is not as glamorous as the skin/leather used so that mismatch makes this bag a miss for me.
