So if we asked you when you were 20 ,do you think you are going to be involved with handbags? Would your answer probably have been no?
Andrew: I would of been like “What, are you crazy!”

I think my favourite part in the interview is where Andrew discusses naming the Sirena bag. so hilarious!

Fantastic interview! Andrew is so down to earth and open. My favorite part of the interview was when he was describing the LP girl. Bags are really an extension of your personality, and its great to get his perspective on the personalities that would mesh well with LP’s style!
I always love parts hearing how a designer got into the business. Fascinating how he was originally in medical school, but ended up in fashion.
I also liked the Samantha/Sirena bit…I watched Bewitched, but I don’t think I would have caught on. Cute.
I LOVE HANDBAGS AND WOW-HE went from a Medical student,obviously smart enuf for that choice but he goes out into a totally different profession-I wanted to be a doctor, a pediatrican, but when I realized I had just met my hubby and he was grounded to his family and friends and wasn;t leaving, I made the choice to change career, not as drastic as Andrew, I stayed in the science field-a Chemist ,
but I’m sure he knows he made the right choice , and I did too, 33 years later happily married!
Secretly I digress and should have been a fashion designer……………………………
My favourite part is definitely talking about how he came up with the name Sirena, who would have thought it could be something so.. silly and normal? Always love when people stick in little private jokes or references into their work, purely for their own amusement!

My favorite part was definitely about how he got into the business- how he was a med student, then architect, then fashion designer. I wish I had the guts to do that! Now I’m regretting everyday that I have chosen the path of nursing and not going to FIDM! oh well, I guess i’ll leave fashion up to Andrew and I’ll go on saving lives =)

My favourite part is definitely the “medical school to fashion designer” switch…pretty much sums up my life at school right now (minus the success, I really should start designing bags instead of buying them, lol).

I liked two parts of the interview:
1. The first part was where he said that he had no idea what he wanted to do after medical school and architecture school…He accidently started creating designs for textiles and accessories…
2. The “Bewitched” TV show inspired the design for Samantha/Serena handbags…I liked that part a lot…
I liked Andrew Cotton’s description of the LP girl… fits me to a T! He’s a pretty facinating guy… the switch from medicine to architecture to design is a pretty major one. I also noticed that he said there isn’t a lot of culture in LA….
The whole interview was great! I loved reading about the of how he evolved from being about medical student to being a handbag designer, and also how they try to stay true to the brand evolving.
I liked the first part of the interview when Andrew discussed finding the right fit for himself after medical school, architecture, and then designing. It just goes to show that you can do anything when you put your mind to it and have a passion for it. If youre mot happy having one career-move on until you find something that brings you joy!
i love that he followed his heart in what he wanted to do rather than what society told him he should do (Dr, architect etc.). Also the Sirena part is adorable hahah
I found it hilarious that he went from med school to designer! Just shows that everyone needs to follow their gut and do what is going to make them happy, instead of what everyone else thinks that they should! Love the bags!
I liked Mr. Cotton’s style prediction about hardware and color for next season.
I like finding out how designers get into the business, but the part about Bewitched – Samantha/Sirena was soo funny. He seems to have a great sense of humor!

I also liked the Samantha/Sirena part, particularly when he says, “I was like Oh my god its Sirena. No one will get it, but I will have a good chuckle”. Andrew has such a fun sense of humor!
I’m always so curious how people end up in their line of work, especially bag designers! Its so interesting hearing how a progression of unexpected circumstances and experiences lead to starting a business then making fabulous bags!
I love how he comes up with the names so spontaneously – it shows that it’s all up to his creativity and inspiration!

Haha! He’s awesome, I loved this interview….one of my favorite parts of the interview was when he was asked where he came up w/ the names for his collections of bags, and he said about naming one bag Samantha and decided to name another one of the bags from the collection, with a bit different shape Sirena for Bewitched. That was really cool, I like how, instead of naming his bags after a model or celeb, he decided to make it a personal little thing that would make him smile every time he sees his work. Very cool. Of course I was also very interested in what he said was the big thing for spring/summer 09…always interested in that. Very informative! I love Linea Pelle, the leather is SO AMAZING yet they’re very affordable.

I love the part where, when Andrew is describing his favorite drink, he says “I don’t want any little vegetation taking away from my drink and taking up space.” That was too funny!
Favorite part is how Andrew kept reinventing himself (med school, greeting cards etc) and flowed with the opportunities that life presented for him. Lucky for us! I love L.P. bags the edgy and durable soft leather.
My favorite parts (I had two, of course!) of the interview are first, when Andrew was describing the woman he met in New York ” who was literally always in leopard from head to toe.” That is hilarious, I love that he found her “fascinating” he is obviously a great character himself and is therefore attracted to others of the like. My second favorite part is when he said “there’s not a lot of culture [in L.A.]” I just love that he is so blunt and outright.
I like the part where he describes the Linnea Pelle girl- the best of uptown and downtown is a great description!
I liked the fact that you and Andrew had more in common than just his handbags, both of you liked Brothers and Sisters. This showed that you were able to be comfortable interviewing him. And I liked the fact that he wore his product (belt) that shows me that he believe in the product he produces.
I love the part about Andrew’s career move – very fascinating to read how he got into the business.
My favorite part is when he talks about being true to the brand. I work in advertising, so that part spoke to me.

I was bewitched by Andrew’s fondness of the show, Bewitched which led to the Samantha and Sirena bags. I didn’t think of that when I saw the bags, but I so appreciate his “tribute” as I was a fan of the original series. I know it wasn’t part of the interview, but I just want to give a shout out to my favorite show, Brothers and Sisters! Kitty gets to carry all the interesting bags! Kudos to Andrew for finding a career that he so obviously enjoys!

Andrew: Great question! We get approached by a lot by celebrities (reps) who want to collaborate which is very flattering. Ideally we want someone who has great style of course, is a positive role model and who can also have some longevitySO with that lets just say that you should stay tuned

I was so surprised to read that Andrew started out in Medical school…then Architecture….what a circuitous route to design! So interesting! Needless to say, I ADORE Linea Pelle bags!
I love that he floundered around for awhile, seriously…architecture! That’s my career of choice but when someone really finds their niche, that’s when the magic happens!
I liked his overall attitude. He maintains his dignity and doesn’t seek out celebs to promote his product but recognizes that great design will be recognized.

i think its fascinating learning how people come to be what they are. the fact that he had started out in med school and ended up being such a successful designer only inspires other people like him.

I like when he described who he thought the LP girl was, because I feel like that is a great attitude to have when designing purses for the every day woman (something that is classy, but not overly trendy!).

I had no idea they started out with belts . . . I sure wish I had the pull to order every bag in the collection! Seriously sounds like a cool, laid-back environment to work in.
I loved his whole attitude and outlook on everything, he seems like he would be a great guy to meet and just have a drink with! I especially liked hearing what direction LP is going in, with lots more Dylan (my favorite line), and more beautiful colors! It was also interesting to hear he didn’t start out in the career world as a designer…just goes to show that you never know what direction life can take you.

My favorite part of the interview was how he talked about drinking the wine and not remembering which movies he saw – kindred spirits. I travel enough but still can’t get over my fear of flying and must be a little out of it to even board. This little insight into himself and his traveling hobbies was pretty neat.

I own one of their belt’s and a few months ago I tried to purchase one of thier bags in turkquise but it was sold out. That bag seemed to be the perfect shade of turkquise. I guess I have to agree with Andrew when he said Linea Pelle does get colors right because I still dreaming of the bag wishing I got it!

I read the interview last night, and it sorta tossed around in my mind today. I’ve been an Andrew Cotton Fan since he started at LP.
The part of this story I love is how effortlessly his designs click; it’s a continuation of the way he naturally found his work / it found him.
His LP designs evolve just that organically. He keeps his decorative elements to a single note. Never OOT, just right-to-the-edge.
An understatement in honest naked leather – pure & simple.
Following LP design is pure fascination! This is still just the beginning of what we’ll see from the illustrious Mr.Cotton and his distinctive style.
(As much as I love my Samanthas, I hope to meet Serena soon, in royal purple w/gunmetal!)
i definitely love how Andrew describes what the LP girl is like. A girl who isn’t afraid to express her sense of style, to try different things. A girl who doesn’t need labels all obvious to others to show and let it be known that shes chic. A girl who is a mixture of casualness and elegance. That is definitely what us LP girls are all about!!

Andrew: That’s a loaded question, but Color and Hardware! Colors start out rich and deep for Fall 1 and then go bright into Fall 2 & Resort! Dylan lives on in great new silhouettes in a myriad of colors. We also introduce Jacklin and Alex in the same garment washed supple Italian leather. There’s also cool new slouchy Vanessa and studded Serena. Hardware finishes range from matte gold and copper to satin nickel and gunmetal-Everything goes!”
This is the part I love the best out of the entire interview. I mean, it is actually the first time I hear about Linea Pelle. I had no idea what kind of style LP has. After I read this, I understand LP plays with colors, and ornaments the product with hardware. His answer introduces the brand to the people; also gives a brief description about the future trend and collection of LP for Fall ‘09.

I liked most two part of the entire interview. The first one is where he tells about his studies: he discovered his talent in design after trying various choices of education. Not always people admit having the planning of the future not so clear. Hat off for his sincerity.
Second: the Linea Pelle woman is someone which is not fond of big logos. I recognized myself in it. I like bags, but not too bright in colors and evident in logos.

I love the discussion of color, and the importance of color to the LP brand. The colors they use are chic and in style, but they’re also timeless and not difficult to wear. The colors of LP make the bags so distinct!
I loved reading how he got started in this line — by doing accessories first. Stories like that really inspire you — how you can start off small but grow big.
My favorite part was the drink discussion, because I was obsessed with martinis before I discovered wine.

How to choose?! Loved how he got into the business – shows a willingness to go where the opportunity lies and not be rigid about his career plans! Also shows a lot of intelligence, which is apparent in my 2nd fav part: naming Sirena. So cute! And how jet lag doesn’t exist for him – I can totally relate. That’s my 3rd fav part.
I always enjoy hearing both the path that managed, somehow, to lead to this field, and the idea of what is the direction going forward (colour is always a good thing!)

I have to to say that I have two favorite parts:

The fact of where he started and where he is now. WoW! But his description of an “LP Girl” is so right on, straight to the point and also so……..ME!!!!!!!!!

Interesting interview. I think his take on who his customer is appeared spot on……”no blatant logos and label”. My favorite part of the interview was how glleful he seemed that nobody else caught on to the Bewitched reference in naming the bags Samantha& Sirena- so it was an inside joke.

I admire his courage to change areas, from medical school to architecture, and eventually to designs and finally settled in the fashion industry. I bet it must have felt like getting a roller coaster ride, scary, but exciting!
I love this quote: “The best of uptown and downtown!” I think that is something many women strive for! Linea Pelle seems like a great combination of the two and a great representation of “California culture” which was also touched upon in the interview. Love the collection!
The whole interview was pretty great but a couple interesting things that stood out for me was that Andrew Cotton was in medical school but then found he really wanted something else and searched for it until he found it. Armani (was it?) also was in medical school and then went into fashion and I find that that takes a certain kind of person to be able to pursue your dreams instead of following what society/family/friends may say is the most logical thing to do.
I also loved the part about the naming of the bag because that’s just so fun.
My fave part of the interview was when he made reference to “Bewitched” when talking about how he named the Samatha and Sirena bags…my sister is named Samantha, and my mother named her after the Samantha of “Bewitched”. As she was growing up, my sister has this evil side to her that I refer to as her “Serena” side. So I laughed and laughed when I read this part of the interview. I think I’m going to have to go out and get a “Samantha” bag for my sister (or maybe even a “Sirena” bag) for her next birthday…
I like how he described Linea Pelle girls as individuals. That’s totally me.
Definitely the best part of the interview was when Andrew described his start in the fashion business – meeting and befriending a petite, gregarious NYC woman who wore head-to-toe leapard (can’t you just picture her?) and then going to F.I.T. classes with her, etc. As overly sentimental as it may sound, I think that it proves that seemingly random and innocuous events in our lives – including the people that we run into – often lead us down paths of the unexpected and often toward success. I’m always running into people where I think, “Gosh – I wish I could be their friend! They would lend so much color to my life!” Andrew jumped on that bandwagon, took those classes with her, and just look where he ended up! His bags are gorgeous!
I found it interesting that Andrew had the experience of starting off in one direction )ex.Medical school and ending up in a completely different direction that he could not have ever thought of doing. It is like you take one road and then there are many twists and turns and you are in such a different place from where you expected to be but in the end it all works out and you are at a better place. If other people had the guts to experience different things they might be able to find their passion. How cool. I am sure Andrew has many more roads to travel….. and who knows what will be in the future with expanding their business.

i was fascinated to learn how he got into the business and how his designs finally clicked after not feeling right when he first started out with Linea Pelle ….. but my favorite part was this line:

a luxurious handbag is a great thing, but one designed by someone with that kind of sense of humor… that’s something special!
My favorite part of the interview was when he talked about his education and how he switched from considering a career in medicine to a career in design. This particularly interests me because I find myself in almost the exact same dilemma: a career in biology and academia or one in art, design, and fashion? It’s a choice between what speaks to your mind and what speaks to your heart – i.e., impossible! In any case, it’s heartening to read about someone who chose the latter, since my family seems to think that would be the worst idea ever
My fave was the info about what’s up next at the very end of the interview which is going to be COLOR and hardware, TOTALLY COOL:)

For a fashion student such as myself, this interview was very entertaining! i love hearing about people’s creativity and success in the fashion industry. It didn’t feel like he was trying to sell the bag when he talked about the LP girl and her personality traits. It felt like he was speaking about his best friend or someone he admired, which makes me want to own one of these bags more than ever before!
i love how he described the typical LP girl- not afraid to mix it up- not too many logos, but able to indulge in some luxe goods. updown meets downtown- love that.

I was not surprised that Andrew came to fashion in a completely roundabout manner. If you look at the fashion greats, they exude style in every aspect of life – hence the staying power and lifestyle branding success of Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, etc… Style is something that will be expressed no matter which misguided direction you set off in, as long as you follow intuition and opportunity.

Having majored in architecture myself, I thought the “architecture too intense” thing was hilarious. Related to the transition to home design, then home accesories, to jewelry, etc. I especially liked his frank disclosure that he ” was kind of floundering between and took a course and ended up with a mentor who kind of started me off in design.” I think it shows how important a mentor can be to young talent.
As many here have stated, I feel that Andrew’s description of the typical LP girl was quite accurate!

His hop from med school to architecture and then finding his way to design shows it took him a while and a few detours to find his calling. Well, its taking me a while too and I’m still pondering the detours so it’s nice to know it’s not too late for me.

I’m with a lot of the other posters. I loved it when Andrew talked about naming the Sirena bag. I loved watching Bewitched reruns as a kid so I totally got what he was talking about. I thought that was one of the better interviews TPB has done.
I loved reading how bags are named. I have always wondered if they were named after specific people in the designer’s life or if it just happened (like the Sirena bag name).
I’m another one who loved the whole Samantha/Sirena subject.
I think the a good part of the interview is when he describes his life history and how he got to where he is today. It seemed to happen organically for him….he went with his instinct of design and listened to his passion for designing. Its inspiring to hear stories of people who really pursue what they want to do (forgoing a medical career for architecture then design). And if he were not with Linea Pelle, you would probably still see him elsewhere doing design work. Nice work asking questions that lead to thought provoking answers!

I am very shocked that he started out in medical school. I think it just sorta shows that even designers and celebrities go through these situations where you don’t really know what you want to do in life. I just love that he is so down to earth as well. Can’t wait to buy a LP!!
I loved the fact he was into designing so many different things, like furnishings and textiles. I’m sure all the diverse experience lends itself to a unique knowledge of style and functionality. He states Linea Pelle “does color well” and I couldn’t agree more. That is what led me to this brand…seeking out beautiful, timeless colors in a fold-over style tote…and I found Dylan. I’m glad to see he agrees it’s the hottest bag around, with fringe giving it a run for it’s money. I told my friends fringe was coming back, and they scoffed at me!! HAH!

I love that he was originally in med school, then architecture, and then bounced around a bit before his current place at Linea Pelle. That makes me feel a lot better, that even though I still haven’t found my niche, I still can (and will!). I don’t know if I believe him quiiiiiite when he says that fringe is almost a classic… I understand what he’s saying with the bohemian style, but really? It’s a trend. We haven’t seen much fringe in the past few years, and now it’s everywhere… that’s kind of the opposite of classic, to me. Doesn’t mean I don’t want a fringe bag NOW though!
I love to know how designers “fell into” designing. I think great design comes from atypical places–and varied backgrounds.
And references to the Rose Bowl make me sigh for my hometown…. Thanks for the in depth interview.
My most favorite part of the interview was when Andrew said, “But to date I would have to say the Dylan, because I try and reinvent it every two seasons, give it a novelty flare, every other season give it new color. So it is still wildly popular.”
The Dylan is probably my most favorite Linea Pelle bag and I think it’s wonderful that they keep adjusting it.. making it fresh but also original. The colors and the leathers are beyond amazing, and it’s nice to see that Andrew Cotton also likes bringing the Dylan back again and again in new fun colors and alterations! Linea Pelle seems dedicated to the Dylan which makes it all the more special!

As someone who chose a profession back in high school and stuck with it, I have to admire someone like Andrew who followed his interests through various career changes to get to where he is now. It takes a lot of courage to completely change career paths mid-stream – and he’s done it several times! Thank goodness for all of us purse-lovers that he had the perseverence to pursue his interests. Hearing about Andrew’s journey to what is certainly his true calling is what I enjoyed most about this interview.
Very interesting interview! I really liked hearing him talk about his history and I liked that he was able to admit that they made mistakes in the past and they didn’t have “perfect” bags. It’s refreshing to hear someone say they’ve learned from their mistakes rather than defending a weaker product because they are “XYZ” brand and they never make mistakes! Hearing the ideal LP girl was also fun because looking at their collection I can envision it exactly. He certainly knows his audience!

I love Linea Pelle bags! They were one of the first brands that caught my eye here at TPF and leather is divine. Styles are amazing, too.

My favorite part of the interview was when he described his experience at the trade show and how people went crazy over the LP booth design- “The booth was very white, great sign-age, dark shelves, and just a color assortment of Dylan’s on a wall.People went crazy, it was different, it was dramatic, it was color, again we do color really really well it is one of the things we are known for and the leather. ” Very graphic! I wish I could have been there to experience that excitement first-hand.

Well my favorite part of the interview had to be the whole Samantha/Sirena name thing. It’s nice to see such a famous designer be themselves and not be all stuffy. It really added to bring out his personality and made me love the bags even more than before. Plus it reminds me of myself and friends…they hardly ever get the things i think are so funny until AFTER i explain it.

I really enjoyed the part, when talking about the naming process for the bags, he mentioned the “Samantha/Sirena” story. It’s a cute idea first of all,. but just the way he almost chuckled to himself in that ‘At-least-I-thought-it-was-funny’ way is so hysterical – and so REAL. I would love to just have coffee with this guy.
i love the first part of the interview where andrew talks a little about his background. the reason for this is because i’m a bit in the same place as he was. i’m currently studying biology/health (pre-law and pre-med), but somehow i feel like this isn’t the right direction for me. even though i have a full school load, i also take design classes on the side at a local community college… it’s been the most enjoyable part of my school studies so far. i really seem to have no direction at all when it comes to picking out the right profession, but this interview was somewhat uplifiting because it shows how things can sort of fall into the right places and work out in the end.

I loved reading about LP, I want one now. I thought it was interesting that he considers fringe more timeless than trendy. I like the sirena bag and story as well.
The vegetation in drinks bit was funny, but I really like how he broke the mold and changed his direction. That can seem like such a big risk at the time, but it seems to have paid off!
I found the entire interview interesting. One of the most interesting parts was that he had originally started out in med school.
I loved how he described the LP girl as “The best of uptown and downtown!”. Seeing how LP collections are so versatile when it comes to style (ie- dylan vs. janis), it’s so easy to dramatically change your wardrobe with LP handbags! I definately think that Dylan is the icon for LP handbags lol.
I like the part where Andrew discusses naming the bags. I’ve always wondered why designers use certain names (I’ve always wanted a ‘Krystal’ bag and never found one!) The Samantha & Sirena story is cute & I wouldn’t have pieced it together myself. I found it interesting that he started in medical school, then architecture & now is designing belts & handbags. I’m currently on my second career choice ( Int’l Business to Interior Design) and it’s hopeful to see that I still have a chance to be successful. I graduate school soon so hopefully I can convice someone to treat me to a LP bag as a graduation gift!
I think that the interview was great! It’s nice to hear more about the designer and the brand and how the inspiration happens with the collections. I like to get to know designers and find out what motivates them since I am a fashion designer myself!

I found the interview to be really interesting. I like how he told his story of how he got into designing via medical school and how he names the bags.
Others have already said this but I also loved the part about how he started in medicine, switched to architecture and then found his way to a true calling. That’s inspiring to me – brave of him to switch and hold true to himself. Plus – man, the bags are fantastic!
Truthfully? I loved where he described how he likes his favorite drink. Oh, that and his inspiration and how he loves upstate New York. He seems so eclectic and fun…Just like the bags, darling, just like the bags!
Andrew knows exactly how I feel about LP. LP’s bags are definitly for individuals who dares to express herself. It all comes down to the way she carries herself AND the bag to determine whether she has style or not. So many people has the wrong impression that a person’s style determines the bags they should carry. This phrase is in my dictionary, “More of understated casual chic I would say-The best of uptown and downtown.”
My favorite part was that when he flies he takes stacks of magazines and watches sometimes up to 12 movies on the plane, yet by the time he gets off he can’t remember the names of them.. Due to the Wine.. whoo whee, he is a great flyer, sounds like fun.

Andrew: Honestly as I am doing them it usually just clicks. I will be working on it for a few days or whatever and I will be like oh great name and write it down.
I liked reading that he was confused and tried different things when he started out. I think a lot of people can relate to that. And it’s particularly cool that he considered architecture as I think people who have vision and creativity are often attracted to that field.
My favorite part would have to be where he talked about how he got into the business. He started off in such a completely different area and like he said, “floundered around” in different majors and career paths. I find myself in a similar situation, and he definitely gave me hope and inspiration that I too will someday have great success in a field I truly love.
Love the brand. Wouldn’t it be great to find the thing we love to do, especially when people like us love the results!
I was very intrigued by the way Andrew Cotton names the bags. I loved how he did a play on the names Samantha and Serena from Bewitched when naming the Sirena bag. I thought that was very witty and I enjoyed reading that he names the bags so he can get a chuckle even if no one else gets it.
My favorite part of Andrew’s interview was how he wound up a designer. That is true encouragement for me. As a mom who has a son that seems to be floundering as he started off on course, changed courses and now even wants to move in a totally different area that is truely encouraging.
We all want our children to be happy but also settled into thier own careers.

I enjoyed this interview with Andrew Cotton. I feel that he is an extraordinary
designer and has incredible taste and knowledge of what his demographic wants.
The Alyssa and Janis bags really knock me out and are as close to Desmo’s style of bags without being a rip-off! This guy is amazing!
I loved the part at the end when he’s talking about the new lines for the coming seasons. It is a loaded question! I love the studs on LP bags! They are so cool! Matte gold, copper, satin nickel, Gunmetal, love it!
I loved the part where the Samantha/Serena handbags were inspire by “Bewitched” . I am a big cinema/television buff and although I’m not saying that all shows are good it just goes to show how people draw inspiration from all sorts of places!
The ‘Bewitched’ part was too cute!
