Marc Jacobs Amazon Shoulder Bag

Mar 16, 2009 / Posted in Fugly, Marc Jacobs Handbags by Amanda Mull.

Marc Jacobs Amazon Shoulder BagAlright, I’ve done it! I’ve found a bag that not a single one of you will be able to say that Marc Jacobs ripped off from Chanel. Why? Because the Marc Jacobs Amazon Shoulder Bag is far too bizarre to be ripped off from any serious designer. I also think that this will be the first MJ bag in a while without a good bit of “I love it!”/”I hate it!” comment fights – I think you’re all going to hate it (if you don’t, then comment and prove me wrong!). I’m certainly not a fan. It’s just an uninventive small crossbody bag with a layer flap that doesn’t match. Not only does the purse not match itself, but it won’t match anything else in your wardrobe, either. I’m all for doing odd things when they’re done in a way that looks artistic or high-end, and this looks like neither of those things, sadly. It looks more home-sewn and pieced together than anything. Expect it on a sale rack near you very soon. Buy through eLuxury for $2850.

It looks like Marc is now taking to collecting scraps from the cutting room floor and calling them bags or worse yet…clothes. Unfortunately, I KNOW someone will pay the almost 3K for this. And it will only encourage him.
    But it won’t be me.

i can’t defend it. i don’t like it. it would match most if not everything in my wardrobe, however, since i only wear neutrals. i’m not a color and prints wearing type of girl. it’s really one of those bags i can see other people wearing (particularly here in nyc where i see people rocking the craziest of things while looking fantastic) and appreciate if worn with the right outfit and the right attitude, but i definitely couldn’t pull it off.

I actually quite like it, but I’d never buy it (even on sale!) due to my ethical objections to snakeskin (skinning alive etc.).

Actually, he ripped off from himself. This thing is just extension of LV spring 2009 collection.

What in the world is he thinking? If he was going for eccentric, he landed in a whole puddle of it–
Looks like it was designed by a class of kindergarteners on “let’s use up all these leftover scraps” day.

Actually, I kind of love it! I realize I’m in the minority though. I would have a hard time finding the right outfit and even to wear it to but I think it’s super interesting and I love the mix of prints and textures.

What are you talking about, that’s all Chanel! Only joking, of course. This looks like something my mom bought me to wear in the fourth grade and even then I knew it was ugly.

Of course I hate it. It is monstrous and – as sombody wrote – Marc Jacob is greatly overrated and probably reached the stage where he thinks he can sell leftovers for thousands $. The funny thing is that no matter how ugly a bag is, you will always find at least a person who says she likes it…. Even this absurd, overpriced, mismatched mix….

I agree with chloehandbags, I actually like it’s eccentric and quirky quality. It’s not something that everyone will dare to wear which is something I always look for in a handbag. I mean, why would you want to carry the same bag half of the world is carrying? As you can tell, I’m a huge anti-it bag person.

Although, I must say I would never buy it firstly for it’s price-point but most importantly, the fact that exotic skins are used.

Totally, absolutely completely overrated. I don’t get the success. The latest LV collection was a complete rip off of Lanvin two last seasons and Balenciaga last year, only trashy versions of these. It seems all that he can do is to rip off everything that has been successful. He’s really riding on LV’s success, but people buy more of the traditional LV (read: stuff that has been there before him like Speedies, Keepalls, and the like) instead of the heinous stuff that he slaps with an edition limitee (patchwork bag…enough said).

amanda, it seems you were wrong. when marc isn’t ripping off chanel, he’s busy ripping off everyone else. i guess he became one of the most influential and commercially successful designers in the world by stealing everyone else’s designs. lucky him.

rgm, those heinous limited edition bags including the patchwork seems sell out every single time, so i’m not exactly sure where you’re getting your information from.

Tadpolenyc…..are you Marc Jacobs’ PR agent/mother/sister in disguise? Only joking but seriously its good to criticize even your favourite designer. No one gets it right 100% of the time.

RGM, talking about a rip off, did you check out amanda’s latest post for lanvin? the happy square silk bag? apparently lanvin is doing the whole rip off action too.. down to the closure.. a whole another level of trashy version too IMHO..

merve, i wish i worked for mj’s pr. it’d be fun. i do criticize him. i don’t like this bag as i stated above and i have no qualms admitting when his designs aren’t appealing to me. his spring 08 show comes to mind. it’s the rip-off accusations that i find bothersome because while he’s prone to referencing, he doesn’t merely take someone else’s design and replicate it. it’s an overly simplistic, and rather dismissive, way to look at his body of work. fashion isn’t serious, but that doesn’t mean i can’t be passionate about it.

i do like that his designs evoke strong, visceral reactions: you either hate it or you love it, but give the guy some credit. he didn’t get to where he is imitating or exploiting everyone else’s work.

I totally agree with u he didnt get where he did by just copying other peoples’ design. Just lately the stuff that he does is annoyingly familiar. But hey they all do it obviously. I defy anyone who says that all the newer hipper designers are not influenced by the Chanels Valentinos of this world.

Disagree. I quite like this bag. It’s unique, and I can think of quite a few outfits that go well with the bag. But 3k? That’s waaaaay too much!

I like this. A lot. I think it’s odd that the blog poster would think that there is no way that anyone could find something in their wardrobe that would work well with this bag. I don’t know what’s in everyone else’s closet, but I could think of lots this bag would be fab with. This is definitely not a bag for someone that likes to play it safe, but I would love to own this and wear it. Unfortunately, it’s a bit much for my wallet right now, but I would definitely consider adding this to my collection if I found it on sale.

Looking back at this bag, it does have something unique about. Just the fact that no one would dare buy it because it’s so eccentric, gives it a whole other appeal to it. I wish I had bought it when I had the chance!
