Temperley London Electric Hobo

I want very badly to like the Temperley London Electric Hobo. It’s cheery and bright and girly, in stark contrast to pretty much anything else that we’ve seen so far this season, and also in contrast to the weather that’s been going on outside my apartment for the past two days (And really? A hurricane? Isn’t it a bit late for that?).

But so far, the most that I can say is that I really like parts of it, and that other parts completely confuse me. So let’s explore that a bit, after the jump.

Ah, my love of Bottega Veneta leather runs deep. So deep that I spent a good hour talking with Vlad and our friend at BV about every possible home item from Bottega Veneta I would use in my English Manor. Yes, an English Manor, which sounds entirely cool and fits nicely into my dream world.

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Brigette Dome Satchel

Is anyone else seeing an Hermes Bolide when they look at the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Brigette Dome Satchel? I definitely am.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing, since the Bolide is an elegant bag choice in its own right. But like all things Hermes, the Bolide can be prohibitively expensive for a lot of people, and having a slightly less expensive but still well-made option in a similar shape is not necessarily a bad thing.

Jimmy Choo Martha Perforated Clutch

Jimmy Choo Martha Perforated Clutch

Prada, take note: if you insist on producing bags comprised mainly of perforated leather, then you might want to take some notes from Jimmy Choo on how you do it correctly.

We witnessed one of Prada’s perforated failings last week, so now I think that it’s only fair that we feature something like the Jimmy Choo Martha Perforated Clutch, which uses perforation tastefully. Well…maybe “tastefully” isn’t the word. Maybe it would best be described as “stylishly.”

Hunting for the perfect Balenciaga bag

November 10th, 2009 / Posted in Balenciaga Handbags by Megs Mahoney Dusil.

Balenciaga Bags

I have long been telling the story of my collection being Balenciaga-less. It is still Balenciaga-less, even though Vlad and I were on a mission to find me the perfect first Balenciaga bag when we were in NYC. What went wrong you ask, I’ll tell you below.

We started off at the Balenciaga NY store, which is truly off the beaten path near the Hudson River on 22nd Street. The store itself was confusing. As we walked through a cave-like entry way with boisterous music echoing loudly, we wondered if we ended up in the actual store or Balenciaga corporate headquarters. It was their store indeed, with fewer handbags than I expected and service lower than sub-par. Even if there were more BBags in the back room, no one asked us if we needed help, so we only saw what was on the floor. The bag selection was bleak and the service embarrassing, so we left still Balenciaga-less.

gg cotillion

Is it bad that on last night’s Gossip Girl, I found the TI cover song that was playing during the much-hyped threesome more entertaining than the threesome itself? I mean, seriously, who know that “Whatever You Like” was so downright melodious?

If the Gossip Girl writers were going to promote a dirty, nasty, parent-horrifying threesome as the point of this entire episode, it needed to be a lot more than a fairly minor point at the end of the episode’s B plot. Who knew that Jenny was going to cotillion? And who knew that girls going to cotillion don’t wear white anymore? I mean…there used to be a white dress involved in that or something, right? Did I make that up? I might have made that up.

And I’d also ask who would have thought that Serena would come even closer to being involved with a married man, but, well, I think we all saw that one coming.

Trouble brewing at Versace – are bags to blame?

November 10th, 2009 / Posted in In The News, Versace Handbags by Amanda Mull.

versace

More accurately, trouble has been brewing for quite some time now.

We make light of Versace’s relatively piddling bag efforts on a regular basis (or whenever I can’t think of something more interesting to write about), but based on Dana Thomas’s very interesting article on the company’s troubles for the latest Newsweek, bad bags aren’t the only problems that Donatella & Co. are having.

Whether or not we want to hear it, handbags are one of the most profitable and important sectors of a worldwide luxury business – the only thing that makes more money for companies like Chanel and Dior is beauty. So is it true that as go purses, so goes the company?
