Would You Carry a $1300 Leather Plastic Bag With Kittens On It?

Leave it to Balenciaga to try to make this one happen...

Oh Balenciaga, stop trying to make weird bags happen, they’re not going to happen. First there was the Ikea leather shopping tote, and then there was the bag that resembled your grandmother’s couch, and now my friends, Balenciaga has gone and done it again. That’s right, you can now buy a leather ‘plastic’ shopping bag with kittens on. Demna Gvasalia, is known for some pretty wild and out there designs, often taking elements of streetwear culture and, for some reason, producing them at a luxury price point. This bag just might take the cake though. And, if it weren’t strange enough to tote around your belongings in a leather version of a plastic bag, Gvasalia went ahead and added a graphic featuring kittens to the front of the bag.

I have a lot of questions here guys. For one I get that there are some major cat people in this world, which honestly I will never quite understand as I simply cannot stand cats, but really do you love them enough to carry them around on a luxury handbag? I’m mildly obsessed with french bulldogs, and when I say mildy I actually mean more like the word that rhymes with mildly and starts with a w. I’d chase a frenchie down the street if it meant a chance to pet it. However I certainly wouldn’t carry around a bag with puppies on it. Now let’s just say you can’t help but show off your cat-love.

Ok, to each his own I guess, but a leather plastic tote? How does one even comfortably carry this bag all day long? The handles are tiny and the top, like the other 15 plastic bags swimming around under your bathroom sink, is wide open. Balenciaga, please tell me what gives?

It’s not any worse than Givenchy’s Bambi shopper totes.

The concept feels quite “done”, these types of bags must be a huge success since brands keep doing it over and over again?

Kenzie

….is it leather or is it plastic, first of all?

Kaitlin Serio

It’s leather! They call it a ‘plastic’ bag because it’s supposed to resemble a plastic bag from the market.

Yoshi1296

No.

Madame1

These kittens looks much more realistic than what LV has. Kittens & cats on high end designer bags must be the new it gimmick.

Sparky

At least it’s not Disney

Got ‘em!

Haaaaa!

I don’t mind the idea of a leather “plastic bag.” It’s a kitschy idea that I could see fitting with a downtown style aesthetic. But, the kittens take it from ironic to tacky.

Vlaibl

Ridiculous!

I love their XS and XXS bazaar totes. It took me a while to get it, but in the plain versions and some of the graffiti versions, I actually like. Maybe I like the graffiti since I’m a “young 20 something born and raised NYer” and I like the edginess of graffiti. Then again I feel like I am in that target demographic for these bags that Balenciaga is pushing out. I’m actually considering either the “Dreams” purple, black and blue graffiti one in XXS, the XS triangle one in black or the Dior Diorama mini in black. I know what you’re thinking “Dior, duh”
But it’s a gift from my grandma and the message that the graffiti one really means something to me. Although I know I’d use both for a long long time, I know the Diormama is a lot more timeless in the long run and can be used both formally and casual. As opposed to the Bazaar that is only to be used casual and will NOT be a timeless piece, it’s what the message means to me and the sentimental value it would have that would make me keep it forever in the same way someone would keep a classic bag. I guess resale value ultimately wouldn’t matter since I want to keep it forever and have something from her left for me in her memory. It just sounds like a better thing to say “yeah my grandma got me this Dior bag so that I’d always have a memory of her associated with it” instead of saying that with a graffitied Balenciaga bag lol but then again, its for me and my relationship with my grandma is between me and her and no one else and it’s not meant for others to get…. sigh. Sorry for the rambling. I’ll be sure to post the reveal on the forum.

I don’t mind the humour in it actually, I would totally carry it!

I really miss the time, long ago, when every year you had the Balenciaga color chart! I miss the classical Balenciaga models in diferent colors.

Megs Mahoney Dusil

Ah yes, I remember doing that! Balenciaga has changed so much and there hasn’t been as much want for that, but we could look into it again!

Aliza Zibkoff

Cute but, no.

Demna Gvasalia is so faux-innovative.

KloeF

Would I carry it? Suure. With the right outfit and mood.
Would I buy it? Um no. Never. Ridiculous haha.

I don’t mind it at all and the price is low compared to novelty bags from other high-end designers. The leather looks great and it’s a nice format. The cats are fun. I would just lose the “BALENCIAGA” branding.

This is actually recycling old ideas! Lumi has done a leather version of a plastic bag over a decade ago, it’s called the Supermarket Bag. Also, Givenchy has done a luxury tote with a picture of an animal on it – only their version has a raging, slobbering rottweiler on it. I’d much rather carry a bag with cute kittens on it. Even the design of the bag is nice. Just not $1 350 nice.

Casey

absolutely
