If you’ve got quiet luxury fatigue, we’ve got a way to rebel against it, and it just so happens that it is one of Spring 2024 biggest handbag trends. We’re talking about bag accessories.
In many ways, the return and continued rise of the popularity of bag charms makes a lot of sense. As handbag prices continue to rise, making luxury feel completely out of reach at times, buying a charm (or, in many cases, multiple charms) can completely change the look of your bag, especially if it’s neutral or cleaner in shape.
Having an array of bag charms and accessories in your arsenal can quickly turn your quiet carry into a novelty bag, adding a whimsical, quirky flair to an otherwise simple silhouette. The Spring 2024 shows were full of inspiration—both on and off the runways, and bag personalization continues to be one of the season’s biggest trends.
The Jane Birkin Effect
The phenomenon of an overly dressed handbag is nothing new—who remembers the Fendi Bag Bug boom of the mid-2010s? Not to mention, Hermès bag charms have long been a part of the brand’s history, with the queen of the Birkin herself, Jane Birkin, well known for adding flair to her bag.
In fact, the trend continues to make waves on social media, with TikToker’s dubbing it The Jane Birkin Effect and offering tutorials on how to Birkin-ify your bag. This move towards maximalism is a welcome change from the minimalist era we’ve been living in, and dressing up your bag is a sure way to stand out.
While I personally don’t see myself tapping into this trend, I’ve never been one to shy away from color or fun accessories, and it’s one I can genuinely appreciate in others. Where do you stand? Love it or leave it?
I typically like to keep things simple, but I am LOVING chaotic, Jane Birkin bag energy. It’s a great way to add your personality to your bag without permanent commitment. And I can go wild without overthinking it.
Cassie thourpe has done a great video on this trend!
a nice chain means a lot, it shows your personality and taste
I never stopped using bag charms and scarves to dress up my bag. Quiet luxury/minimalism was never going to be my style. I’m loving this.
not for me
I sometimes use alphabet charms and furry pet charms depending on my mood.
depends on the charm, but absolutely love if it’s a good one.
Love this! I’ve always loved dressing my bags, being more popular now there are more and more quirky accessories on the market made for bags. Nice to get creative though…
