The best bags, generally speaking, are both simple and distinctive. That’s a hard line to walk—usually, the things that are capable of making a bag distinct are also what make it not-so-simple. When a bag happens to be both, though, is often when you get an It Bag hit, which is exactly what the Fendi Peekaboo was when it debuted.
Now, though, the Peekaboo has done something that is arguably even harder: it has seamlessly transitioned from being an It Bag to being a genuine classic, the kind of piece that can blend in with personal styles both youthful and mature, conservative and eccentric, neutral and attention-getting. And there’s no better place to find proof of that than in photos of the dozens of celebrities who have carried the bag over the years.
When I started looking for celebrities with their Peekaboos, I was sort of surprised by how many I found. That’s because, despite its popularity and longevity, the Peekaboo has never felt over-exposed or unavoidable to me. It’s maintained a perfect level of exposure for years on end, which it takes a truly special design to pull off.
Part of the reason it’s been able to do that is fundamental to Fendi‘s bag strategy: the brand makes only a select group of designs at any given time, but each season is full of special, small-run versions with embellishments that range from wild to super-luxe. That gives the bag a new life again and again in a way that simply making new colors and sizes doesn’t, and it makes everyone’s Peekaboos feel special. Love the Peekaboo, but it’s very expensive!!! Even the teeny tiny micro is over $1K and you can barely fit lipstick and keys in it.
I’ve owned a Fendi Peekaboo and found it heavy, hard to use because of the closures and bulky. I actually used eBay’s luxury service to sell it!
The croc mini version is amazing.
