Chanel Increases Prices for 2023: Here’s What You Need to Know

How Much More Will You Pay for Chanel? Latest Price Hike Details Inside

Today, Chanel increased its prices for 2023, and we are here to share which bags are affected and by how much. It came as a surprise to absolutely no one, but considering the latest hikes for Chanel bags, it’s hard not to wonder when and if the price increases will see an end.

Chanel 2023 Price Increase Explained

Chanel’s chief financial officer, Philippe Blondiaux, has shared insights into the Chanel price increases. Last summer, he said the brand could implement a price increase “to account for currency fluctuations and inflation.” Moreover, he hasn’t shied away from speaking on the increase in being a part of the brand.

The twice-a-year increase has become something expected by customers over the past years as common practice. When asked about the increase’s reasoning, Blondiaux shared with WWD that “We usually revise our prices twice a year. That’s what we’ve always done and will continue to do.”

In 2022, Chanel maintained the double-digit revenue growth it has accustomed to, even with the closure of stores in Russia and China. However, when looking at the numbers, research analysts for Jefferies shared that the sales uplift the brand has seen could be due to the 21-30% increase in pricing on its bags over the past couple of years versus the overall volume in sales.

The New Chanel Prices and What is Affected

The increase was steep! Steep enough that the only Classic Flap under $10,000 is the small size, with the Maxi reaching the $11,000 mark now. The Classics were hit with a 16% increase, soaring prices above $10,000 for most. The Coco Handle, Chanel 19, and the Pearl Crush were all given a 14% increase across the board.

This was a global increase, affecting many markets. Below, you can find the new, updated prices of Chanel Bags for 2023.

Impact on the Chanel Consumer

The price increases are partly due to Chanel’s desire to become more exclusive. However, the rate at which these bags have increased has turned many off. Customers of the brand have a hard time stomaching, paying nearly $1,000 more for the same bag overnight. Additionally, the frequency and the secrecy of the price increases have some turned off as well.

One user on our forum shared that “When Tiffany’s had a price increase, my SA let me know weeks in advance. I feel like Chanel just wants us to keep spending more. I just can’t help but feel like I’m in an emotionally abusive relationship.”

While other brands also implement increases, Chanel seems to be in a league of its own with the percentage and consistency of increases. Though the brand has worked for worldwide price equality, the new prices put these bags on par with Hermès pricing and as reported by many, out of reach.

Final Thoughts

While many feel negative about the price increase, plenty will begrudgingly pay more for the bags they have been eying and others won’t even bat an eye. Chanel understands its core customers well, one they will confidently retain while reaching new luxury customers.

In-store, plenty of bags are still sold before they ever hit the shelves, letting you know that while these increases are a broadly criticized practice by the brand, it isn’t pricing out its core audience from buying Chanel.

The problem is that I am embarrassed to use them now. Before all this, Chanel classics were just right for everyday life (slightly elevated I concede) and was perfect for travel. They are less structured and lighter. Now, I don’t want to wear something around that costs more than maybe someone’s car. It feels insensitive and casts the wrong image. So I use mine much less often now. Sigh.

I feel no guilt whatsoever. I have worked hard my entire life and wasn’t able to afford a CHANEL until I was 51. I had paid off college tuition for both of my children and have zero debt(except my mortgage) and have earned these bags. People can think me insensitive or whatever they wish. I can’t control that. If they want to judge me on a handbag, so be it.

That’s great, but not everyone has had the privilege to work their entire life to afford one of these bags, just saying. We live in a society, and with that does (or rather should) come having worldly knowledge, prudence and responsibility. Not to be blatantly ignorant. These prices are just getting so ridiculous, I have no idea who is going to feel safe wearing Chanel handbags.

If the quality matched the price increase okay but the quality is crappy and this is a travesty to those that used to enjoy these bags.

Worldly knowledge? Prudence:? It’s just a bag. I don’t feel the need for worldy knowledge before buying a bag. Again…. it’s just a bag. I am perfectly safe where I live. Where do you live? If you can’t be safe walking from your car into a grocery store or down the street carrying a nice bag, perhaps you should move or vote better leaders and DA’s into your state. Futhermore, I didn’t have to work my entire life to afford my bags. At least, I hope not(I’m 52) I just had more important things to pay for. I guess I should have written “justify buying”. So prudent and responsible, I am. Blatantly ignorant I am not. I have done very well for myself. Yes, the prices are crazy, but I can afford them and am willing to pay these prices, if I choose. What I don’t do is judge others for what they do. You should try it.

Let them think whatever they wish. I will not shrink to make others feel good. God created me to shine. I work hard, and I am not living above my means when I spend $7K or so on a bag. I am more at conflict with the leather, as I am an avid animal advocate, so I usually buy pre-loved so not to generate the need to harm more animals. That’s how I justify it anyway.

I agree as well. I am a Stay at home mom with 2 toddlers. My errands are Target and Costco. Prior to kids yea sure I’d only use my expensive bags as my everyday bags and that was a few years ago. Now, you won’t see me using my Chanel’s to target of Costco while lugging my toddlers around.

I’m guessing that’s exactly what these price increases are trying to achieve, if everyone is carrying their CHANEL classics at Costco and Target how exclusive can they really be?

Of course wealthy people can and should normal things but seriously, if you’re doing something so mundane and, gasp, basic as those 2 things and half the people at the store are wearing the same 8k bag that they told you at the store not everyone is given the chance to buy it, don’t you at the very least start to question the supposed exclusivity?

Why are so many worried about what others think? You must be young. That all goes away as you age and see how silly it is to worry about such things. People are going to judge you no matter what. Carry those bags proudly. You spend your money on whatever you desire and make no apologies. Life is too short.

Yes!! I was just talking to my friend about that – its feels sooo elitist– I also am embarrassed to carry mine as well — its just too much — I have lost respect for Chanel’s greed – I don’t want to belong to that club anymore — perhaps i will now purchase some of the seasonal pieces which can be alot of fun – but forget the classics– btw— have you noticed how many classics are being sold on the ‘pre-owned’ websites!! The market is flooded with them anyway!

Great sell them to me. If they are in excellent shape & the style I want, I will buy them all! I don’t care what people think. So they think I’ve done well for myself. I see nothing wrong with that. You’ve let people that either can’t afford them or full their own virtue get into your head. Life is too short to allow that.

Adjusted to inflation Chanel has long been as much as some people’s cars. The idea that it suddenly reflects elitism is laughable and dishonest. A leather purse sold for anything more than a few hundred dollars much less thousands has always been about elitism /implied brand status and brand identity. As much as I love Chanel there are no Chanel bags that are actually worth 2k or 6k in terms of quality so the idea that suddenly the bags are too much is silly. Just own that it’s more than you/others want to pay. Stop the virtue signaling and lying to ourselves that we spent thousands on one bag because of “quality”. Own it, wear your bags. Not wearing a Chanel bag is not going to create equality or the disparity between rich and poor. How you vote, who you elect, the organizations you’re part of, the community initiatives you’re part of will affect change…that’s if folks really care.

Exactly! Although, I’ve paid a few hundred for say a Coach bag, and it doesn’t compare to my CHANEL BAGS. It just doesn’t. I don’t think they are worth what they are charging now, however. I have them because I love them and I am in a position where I can have them. I came from nothing. I don’t have a college degree, but both of my kids do. I am at a point where I carry no debt, my kids have been educated and are doing well, my cars are paid off, I have a nice retirement and I travel where ever and whenever I want. I can’t take my money with me & my kids don’t need it, Nice bags make me happy. So I will own it and wear them every chance I get. Hate to turn this political but, I believe in Capitalism. I believe that if you work hard enough, you too can have what I have. So the people that judge, need to stop all of the judgment and get to work, so that they too, can have the things they want. Handouts and pitty isn’t going to save them either.

Otherwise why buy luxury if your not going to wear it?

Stop shaming people for living their lives and spending the money that they earned the way they wish to spend it! I grew up dirt poor raised by a single mother in Baltimore City. No one helped me and I came out just fine. Probably because no one pittied me. I was taught to work hard for the things I wanted. Guess what, it worked. People don’t want or need your pitty. Gia was merely saying that life is short. Enjoy it. Do what makes you happy. How do you know that she doesn’t donate to those in need too?

Is it insensitive for her to commit to wearing her bags regardless or is it virtue signaling performative to think that not wearing a certain bag actually makes things better. Most people (including certain keyboard warriors…) want to virtue signal and shame others meanwhile the actual work that lends to a more equatable and fair society is overlooked. A lot of people would rather “look” and “sound” like they care than actually do the work necessary to facilitate greater equality partly because some of that work points to the privilege that allows someone to sit at home and think that their choice of bag is what will make a difference to those struggling.

Insensitive bc people struggle?
i don’t live in a communist country nor do I ever want to. As the globalists say, “you will own nothing and like it.”
owning and wearing luxury has nothing to do with being sensitive to others. BC others are not in a position to buy Chanel means I have to dress down for them to make them comfortable???
That is why the rich have rich friends. So they are not having to accommodate someone who doesn’t wear the same items. I wear wear what I like according to the occasion and look my best. Looking my best is also out of respect to others. So you do you. As you say I’m so I sensitive, how much do you donate? Or volunteer or give food to the homeless begging on the street. Then sell your car and take the bus.

That horse has left the barn. As prices at Chanel increase it makes sense for people to save a bit more and buy better quality (than Chanel) Hermes bags. This is a boost for Hermes.

The most ungettable bag in the universe (unless you’re JLo). The Hermes SA are beyond snotty. At one point, I thought I might hunt down a Birkin Paris Vs dealing with the pretentious folks on 5th avenue. Finally, I decided NO bag is worth all this and suddenly the Birkin became completely unattractive to me.

Hermes is not the same look. You either like Chanel or you don’t. I own a couple birkins and they are BORING.
Chanel has a particular look and vibe. Hermes vibe is boring.

Chanel is not hurting for customers so clearly they are good at running their business. And, lots of people prefer Chanel ‘s aesthetic to Hermès’. It’s all a matter of personal taste of course. Those two brands are not interchangeable.

Honestly, i have been considering a Chanel bag for my collection several years and i always feel lazy last moment before buying it. Now every time i open Social Media I am bombed with Hermes and Chanel bags unboxings etc. It has become a very vulgar brand for me. It lacks any exclusivity anymore. I see it as a way for NEW RICH to behave like sheep in a herd all buying the same stuff to feel they prove to the world they have money.
I am not interested anymore in Chanel as a bag lover. Much rather buy Loewe that has even better quality, a classic elegant vibe and less visible logos.

Loewe is literally every other post on IG nowadays but continue about exclusivity and class and elegance lol. People are funny. Half this thread is people saying they won’t continue wearing Chanel because they can’t wear something so expensive & elitist while others are struggling and the other half of the thread is ppl who find the brand to ubiquitous and common because “the others” are wearing it (basically it’s not elitist enough). LMAO

Read the article above for Chanel reasons for the steep hike. Boils down to two main reasons:

1. Maintain brand exclusivity with the steep prices so that only the ones who can afford will continue to buy.

2. Increase profit margin by selling fewer bags by charging higher selling price>
Chanel strategy is now to focus only on that segment of customer who aren’t price sensitive at all and will continue to buy despite price hikes . Never mind the potental fall in sales revenue from lesser buying from average Joe coz the increase in price hike will more than cover that fall in revenue from this ltter group of consumers. Also research shows that the super wealthy contribute around 40% of Chanel’s revenue.

I think there are more “average Joe’s” than super wealthy consumers. If Chanel wants to cater to the super wealthy maybe in time they will get bored of the brand and/or the high prices for inferior quality, which is becoming the norm.

I couldn’t afford chanel last week and I certainly can’t today. lol. Thats some crazy coin for a bag. I can always dream of owning a chanel but the day may never come. And i’m totally okay with that. Thankfully theres plenty of other bags from brands that aren’t so pricey with regular price increases.

I suspect it will be reflected in a shift in the demographics of Chanel owners. There will unlikely be a shortage of demand, but the demand will come from a different assortment of consumers. Call it generational shift if you will. Maybe that is what Chanel aims to achieve, who knows.

More reason for me to use my current Chanel. Use it instead of letting it collect dust on your shelf. I use Chanel to go to Target, Costco, etc. As long as I’m in an area that’s not high crime, ghettos, etc. I’m wearing my Chanel. I bought it to wear it.

I live in the “Ghetto”, Harlem NY, according to many. Wear my Chanels wherever and when ever I want, with ease. Funny but its in “non-ghettos” where my bags seem to get the most attention. Frankly I feel more uncomfortable in these spaces. The non-stop comments, compliments though they may be, are too much. Best I pull out the Coach’s in these “hoods”.

The only thing luxury about this brand is the high cost associated with such. Taking into the account the lack of quality, treatment of employees, disregard for the long time client ( preferring the new younger client who is desperate for the logo), lack of transparency in producing and sourcing, I’m not sure why anyone wants to be associated with them any longer. It’s been a huge turnoff for most people I know.

I regret not buying a black caviar medium classic flap with gold hardware in 2017 for $4900, now there is no way I will ever buy one.

In 2013 I purchased a floral Medium Classic flap from 2010 on the pre-loved market for $1975, there was no tax because that was before the online sales tax business. Then in 2017 I bought a rectangular mini flap in iridescent turquoise in new condition also on the pre-loved market for $2600.

The only bag I have bought from the Chanel boutique was my Chanel 19 in 2021 and even that I thought was so ridiculously priced.

Curious if at some point this will negatively affect them. The recession is supposed to be coming and I have read that this time it might affect the rich more.

I liked Chanel years ago, until my daughter (and her friends) began calling them Forever 21 bags. If you’ve been in a Forever 21 over the years, you’ll see that they carry several Chanel knockoffs. Now every time I see a Chanel, I think of the cheap imitations worn by teens in the local mall.

It’s so funny to me how when Chanel has a price increase everyone rushes in comment. What’s strange is how the same comments are echoed over and over on every price increase. The quality is bad, I’m no longer buying, it’s for fools. This brand clearly stirs emotion and is an aspirational brand for many. I think the real issue is that people are upset they are being priced. Chanel doesn’t need to be affordable and clearly the everyday woman is not their target market. Just my opinion but I never see this many posts on PB except on Chanel.

So sorry I sold so many of my Chanel Classic bags years ago, I had them in black, navy, burgundy, dark green, but saved one that I’ve never used, a size medium in black fabric. One more point: for any brand wanting to achieve the “classic/exclusive” status, what are they doing flooding the internet with all the influencers of questionable tastes and what have you trotting about with their products? THAT is the ultimate wrong image.

I would still buy the bags if they were actually worth it. I rather save that money for exotic bags (sorry I know) or Hermes or a limited edition bag from any of the other brands. It’s really not worth it. Besides aside from the boy bag, classic jumbo , a few other season pieaces, while Karl was alive and old shopper tote I have yet to see a chanel bag design I want to add to my collection. I still buy their clothes though even with the price increase as it’s hard finding substitutes for them.

It’s pure greed and arrogance. My Chanels are from the Lagerfeld years and the small flap bag I own now sells for $2900 on RealReal! It’s obscene, I didn’t pay nearly that much when I bought mine 6 years ago.

Linda H

As a few others have mentioned, they flood the market with the influencers, but at the same time want to be exclusive? Sounds conflicting to me.
That said, I was going to buy a Chanel February of 2020 even set foot into the doorway of the Chanel store, in Palm Beach. Then thought, I would wait until fall. COVID hit two weeks later, and I never did buy my bag. Oh well. My life went on, and all is fine.
I guess the upside is you can buy Chanel. Try buying a new Rolex! You go on a long waitlist and from what I understand, you better be a very good customer in order to “get the call” when the store does get a shipment of Rolex’s. Rolex is going exclusive by not making as many watches, and certainly not flooding the influencer market, nor doing crazy price increases.
I think there are many ways to become more exclusive, and not sure Chanel is doing it the correct way, but who am I to judge?

I have EIGHT Chanel bags. Two are classic, two are Caviar. My very first Chanel bag was purchased in 2009. I paid $2800 red caviar classic bag which at the time was also absurd. My last mini embellished black flap bag cost $7k. While I’m not embarrassed about paying absorbant prices, I have had issues with unreparable bags. Particularly my silver metallic top handle. The metallic was scratched day two and not repairable. The classic red caviar bag is ripped on the inside and also unreparable because I would lose the logo/stamp. I absolutely refuse to spend this kind of money and receive no guarantee on repairs. My last CC bag will be a white flapbag then I’m DONE!

Years ago, I paid $3600.00 for my first Chanel classic and I thought the price was absurd. Then, only a few years ago my hubby bought me a Maxi Flap for $6K. With the recent price increases it is now $11,500! However, if I was to sell I would only get what the market would bear and I don’t think that would be $11,500.

Ok I see how my comment spurred quite a discussion… Now I have another musing: Chanel Classics nowadays are a bit awkward to use – (my own feeling) – too tone-deaf for running around town; too bland/commonplace for social events – so I tried on Chanel 19 last week. I think it is the vibe Chanel always signaled to me. I like how playful and functional it is. And the tweed is my weakness! Well…now it is a toss for me between Dior D-Joy and Chanel 19. Mirror mirror on the wall, which bag should I go for?

A fool and their money are soon parted!

This increase actually made me LOL! I live in Sydney and the price of the basic flap is now 15-16k here. There comes a point at which this is just gross and frankly vulgar. Surely 10k of that money is better used on something like an experience or even to help someone in need. And as for the wealthy that are purchasing this…I know a lot of extremely well off people and they don’t subscribe to mass consumption in the way that Instagram suggests. Often money is spent on beautiful homes, holidays and business ventures and many use items they have had for decades. For reference look at prince Charles and Camilla/royals – huge privilege and resuse (Camilla is often seen with a coco handle). I think we can all agree that as handbag enthusiast we spend money on brands where most of the purchase price is the association, name, quality but this is just plain silly though I am waiting to see how this pans out. How many will take out their wallet to desperately pay for a classic flap when the price set by these greedy idiots is 30k??

Unpopular opinion: Chanel bags are ugly, uptight, and look like they’re for an old lady. They went out of control popular with the Instagram influencer era but now they look basic and like you’re trying way too hard. They are also a pain in the ass to open & close.

I agree, but I am also partial to Hermes. I love the coolness of my slouchy Birkins. I went to the Chanel boutique and considered a classic flap, but once I put it on I hated the chain on my shoulder and felt the bag aged me. Maybe because I still think of my grandmother in the 1980’s with her Chanel and it conjures old lady memories. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

I would rather buy other brands’ bags than Chanel. There are tons of luxury bags below that price point (YSL, LV, GUCCI, PRADA, BV, FLP, GOYARD, etc.). Quality on Chanel bag is a total NIGHTMARE! But YOUR MONEY, YOUR BAG! go get it

These debates/ personal attacks/ judgements of others just show how polarized we have became. We came to this post because we are either Chanel handbag owners or curious about Chanel. Yet, our degree of interest or choices of how and when to use the bag are being judged as a reflection of our our whole self. This makes the world a pretty scary place where you can’t express their thoughts freely about your bag without being judge in a purseblog where everyone has a common interest, purses/ handbags. I grew up learning that there is a time and place for everything.

All of this sensitivity towards what others think of us carrying Chanel makes me think ……. I am grateful that I am finally able to buy whatever bag I want. I am over 60 now….happy to be healthy and alive. I can remember when I was a model in my twenties a regular gig I had at a high end store as very poor model. I mean so poor my best looking pair of shoes was a decent pair of cowboy boots. I got hired as the premier model in those boots. The ladies whom I modeled for never gave a thought to showing off their luxury bags and diamonds and clothes to me. Nobody ever showed a bit of restraint around me back in those days. Now that I have finally reached a place where I can enjoy my luxury items I should put them away? I will not do that. I earned my way and now I want to enjoy what I have. Is that wrong???? That seems to be the theme here….

Is it just me or have women become just too obsessed with “The Bag”? Luxury and style are not just about the bag you carry. Even more repulsive than paying Chanel’s crazy price increase are women who buy luxury bags and still look terrible wearing them. If you can invest in a luxury bag then invest in quality clothing and outfits that show you understand and respect the brand and the value of your purchase.
