Several months ago, we brought you news of Fendi’s Resort 2016 strap line, and if you missed it, it’s more or less exactly what it sounds like: statement-making handbag straps, many embellished or finished with exotic leathers, that customers can add to their existing bags for around $1,000. It now looks like Valentino had the same idea, and at roughly the same price point.
These three straps, all of which retail for $1,045, have popped up for pre-order before Fendi‘s were able to make it out of the gate, but it looks like they’re part of the Spring 2016 collection, based on the projected April 2016 delivery date. With two handbag powerhouses making custom straps, though, it’s clear designers think there’s a significant market for high-dollar bag accessories. Considering the success of Fendi’s $800 Bag Bugs and charms like them, that position is not without significant basis.
After all, for a woman who regularly spend thousands of dollars per bag, what’s an extra grand to make a bag her own, or to make a bag from the back of the closet feel brand new again? Or at least that’s the attitude these brands are likely hoping consumers will have, anyway, and they do know their customers well. If a thousand dollars weren’t a significant amount of money for me, I could easily see myself picking up a special strap to spice up a couple of the neutral bags in my collection, and for plenty of luxury clients, it’s not a significant amount.
Now, we’d like to put the question to you: if Fendi, Valentino or one of the other brands that will surely follow them into the strap business made a piece you really liked, could you imagine yourself shelling out for it? If so, check out several of Valentino’s below.

I’d never pay that much for a strap. You can actually have your strap custom made by any small company that makes guitar straps, which is what these are essentially.
The BF has a great strap on his guitar, it’s made of black leather and it has a swamp snake stripe and his name embroidered on the back of it. And it cost 150 €.
The Fendi ones look like something I’d have stolen off my dad’s acoustic guitar from the 70’s.

These Valentino straps aren’t attractive, but I’m admittedly drawn to the multicolor Fendi studded strap that Olivia Palermo uses. I think it’s a fun and relatively understated way to personalize a bag (the bag charms are just too much for me), but I do not think I’d ever buy one. I just can’t justify that price.
What is interesting to note is that Gucci started this trend last year with their Lady Web bags that come with both a matching leather strap and the green and red “Gucci” woven strap. Both of the straps were included with the bag at no additional cost. Yay Gucci!
I’ve always said that not only is Gucci awesome with their products, they are also FAIR in pricing. $1000 for a strap that’s not exotic? No thank you.

You all know I’m a huge Gucci fan, and that is precisely why I love the Lady Web bags – they are really cool and the straps were such a great addition PLUS fair price!
These r so overpriced and it seems a bit of a ploy to entice us to part with more money.
I do like the idea but I guess I’ll wait a few months until more affordable brands start making them. I think the Valentino straps would give many plain bags a nice boho vibe

There is nothing original in your bags, although your clothes are beautiful your bags are always inspired by other… Btw this straps don’t even worth 200 bucks let alone 1000… On the other hand, i am more excited for Fendi’s straps which are gorgeous and way more interesting…

To me, $1,045 is just not worth it for a strap. I’d rather put that money towards an actual bag, not just a strap. It’s too much of a novelty for my budget.
No, I’d rather put my money towards buying an actual bag rather than just a strap. Is that why most designer bags does not come with a shoulder strap so they can profit more from it?! Argh! Designer brands are over pricing and now they want to rip us off with this!
They look like old man suspenders and cheap ones at that. $1000 and you only get two little pieces of leather. I can get a handbag for these prices.
I honestly would. It’s different from charms, straps are a big part of the bag. I hate that their trying to make a market out of what should already come with the bag though.
Definitely not. The idea of shelling out an entire bags-worth of money on a strap (an ugly one at that) is ridiculous to me.

The bags pictured above are made from the cheapest material available and look like $5.00 thrift store schlock. Probably cost $5 to make. No strap should be more than $100.
Product like this I find insulting. Designers should respect their customers.

I did buy the Fendi multi-color stud strap for my Fendi bag and I love it. Then again I’m also that weird chick that loves the monster fur charms and I own a couple of those too!

But I don’t love these Valentino straps at all. They look like old folk guitar trap. I can get one even more beautiful and cheaper at the guitar store.
Can buy a decent used car instead of gaudy designer bags these days–now an extra $1,000 for a gaudy strap. Poor taste when so many are struggling. It will be nice when the straps are more affordable for the average consumer–a nice way to pizzazz a bag would be swapping straps.
