Are Mesh Bags About to Surpass Raffia As Summer’s It-Carryalls?

A lesson in summer dressing...

Savette Mesh Pochette

Earlier this spring, I mused that mesh bags were the chic trend to try this summer and, as the kids say, I think I girl-bossed a little too close to the sun. Nearly four months later, spring is behind us, summer is in full swing, and everywhere I turn, the mesh bag is waiting.

Rushing around the corner to catch the F train to Brooklyn—a mesh bag is making its way up the stairs on the arm of a chic stranger. Scrolling through Instagram past a post of a girl I haven’t spoken to since high school—yup, she’s carrying mesh too.

For years, the basket bag (and really anything wicker or raffia) was the It-bag of the summer, but this summer, mesh is giving raffia a run for its money, and the more I see it, the more I understand why it’s become a hit amongst fashion fans everywhere.

Breezy, Breathable, and Suddenly Everywhere—Mesh Is Having a Moment

What I keep coming back to is that while mesh does offer the seasonal, novelty feel of a quintessential summer bag, it strays away from the distinct beach/vacation vibe of wicker or raffia, making it the perfect in-between to carry in a city. Plus, it’s oh so chic.

There’s also the bonus that it’s lightweight and breathable—perfect for those 100-degree days when even the lightest fabric sitting against your skin feels heavy and hot. While raffia bags have transcended the trend stage, becoming a seasonal staple that returns year after year, mesh bags, which returned after they popped up sparingly last year, are quickly gaining traction, giving raffia a run for its money.

Since we last visited this trend, a fresh crop of mesh bags hit the scene, with The Row’s Barn Bag leading the pack. We’ve added to our selection to bring you the best mesh bags all in one place. To mesh or not to mesh?

I like the idea of mesh bags, but most of these prices are laughable. Mesh is polyester or nylon. I am shocked these companies think these prices are acceptable. No wonder they are all having financial issues.

Cute bag, big NO NO for the price!!

Mesh bags: such a thoughtful way of showing pickpockets whether you’re worth their time. (Especially if the mesh bag has an open top.)

I am so glad I live in a country where pick pockets aren’t really an issue. We are lucky can use mesh, clear and open top bags without any real worry.

Love mesh bags! Easy to wash and very light weight. But probably will stick to something cheap and fun from a grocery store rathe than “designer”

These are giving “free with purchase” at the cosmetic counter. The prices are a laugh riot. Sometimes I think the labels are making jokes of their customers.

I love the Staud and the Alaia. 😍
