Real Talk: We Don’t Talk About Tod’s Handbags Enough

Why is Tod's so underrated?

Recently I was doing some innocent online shopping in search of holiday gifts when I came across a stunning Tod’s bag. I did a double take and added the bag to my cart immediately to further assess it later. The bag I fell head over heels in love with is a rich, saturated leather silhouette with perfectly placed hardware: not too bold, yet still eye catching—a hard balance to strike. I realized in that moment that although I know a lot about luxury handbags, I don’t have a lot of knowledge on Tod’s bags.

When I think of Tod’s, I usually think about their shoes. The Tod’s driving moccasin is an iconic luxury shoe, which make sense since the brand’s history is rooted in shoemaking. Tod’s unsurprisingly has a rich history, known for its expertly crafted leather shoes. Tod’s as we know it today didn’t launch until 1983, but the care and love that goes into the craftsmanship has been passed down through generations since the turn of the 20th century.

In my quest to learn more about Tod’s handbags, I went to the Tod’s forum to read some buzz about the handbags. This thread from 2014 really secured my new adoration of the brand, as members rave about the quality of the bags. Member Vitamina H summed up her feelings on the brand, “I am a longtime Tods fan too! I have added their bags to my collection for years. I think they are extremely well made and perfect for the individual who loves quality and timelessness in their leather goods/shoes. I have carried my Tods bags much more often than my other bags. They are just so easy to grab and go!”. This has only intensified my desire to add a Tod’s bag to my collection.

I find the bags to be understated, sleek, and classic. Devoid of any large or flashy logos, Tod’s bags are perfect for those looking for chic, well made designs. With quality that is made to last and a fair price point I believe a Tod’s bag will be my next acquisition. After doing a deep dive and reading accounts of how wonderful the craftsmanship and value is, I have to wonder, why aren’t we talking about this brand more? Is Tod’s the most underrated premier designer handbag brand? I may have to order one so I can report back.

I’ve rounded up my favorite items from Tod’s below. The handbags are divine, but I couldn’t mention Tod’s without at least throwing in a few pair of shoes as well! What have your experiences been with Tod’s handbags?

I think its a bit pompous to ask “Why is Tod’s so underrated?”. Who says they are underrated? PurseBlog rarely mentions them because PB reserves most of its posts for the big brands.

I think what was also meant there is that we don’t see a lot of talk on our forums about the brand. Our forum is a good gage in what people are interested in, and Tod’s doesn’t receive a lot of traction even though they are a well-known brand who makes great bags.

Hey Lucy – I love Tods too. I think you meant to write assess in the second sentence.

Years ago, I loved Tods and then I had a series of major quality control problems with the bags and stopped buying them. I love their aesthetic so if the quality has improved, I could be game to try again.

Tods Small Flap Tote links to Farfetch and the bag is: $3,380. Where can I purchase it at the $2375 price you quote? Thx!

I had their doctor bag years ago. I loved it. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a freak soda accident. People would compliment it all the time. It was so soft and well made. Sigh. I miss that bag. I also love the loafers, but the city’s that have a full sole for walking. So comfortable!

I own 2 Tod’s bags and a pair of loafers. I love them all. I’m hoping to add at least one more bag.

I have three Tod’s bags, all purchased at resale shops. The prices were extremely affordable as Tod’s isn’t on their “coveted” radar. The quality and craftsmanship is exceptional, the leather pliant and the colors are remarkable. Get compliments on these bags every time I carry them.

I have a d bag which was all the rage a decade ago but they dropped off my radar as well – i still love their shoes for the comfort factor

The Tod’s outlet has some stunning pieces that are always at a good price. The pieces on the second hand market are out of this world inexpensive. I almost wish you didn’t post about it bc it felt like my little secret brand, but the brand really does deserve better recognition. They are the majority owners of Roger Vivier and are helping restart Schiaparelli. The chairman is a very generous philanthropist, and is pretty much single-handily funding the restoration of the coliseum in Rome.
