PurseBlog Asks: What Handbag Would You Like to See Come Back In Style?

First there was the Dior Saddle Bag, then there was the Fendi Baguette, what's next?

One of the first things I remember learning as a college freshman studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology is that fashion is cyclical. Almost everything that’s trending at any given time is either a direct revival of a past trend or a reinterpretation of one. In the last few years the cyclical nature of fashion has been increasingly apparent as the trending bags of today are really the it bags of yesterday. Take for example the Dior Saddle Bag, which returned with a big bang last year, and most recently Fendi brought back its iconic Baguette. At the end of 2017, Gucci released its Ophidia line, which though not a direct it bag of the past, was inspired by bags from the Gucci archive. Those who love 90s and early 2000s fashion have welcomed the return of overly branded logo bags.

Some may say that the resurrection of it bags of the past is lazy on part of designers, but the return of these bags is exciting for many. Those who loved the bags in their heyday appreciate the nostalgia they bring, while younger and new handbag lovers are able to experience the bags with fresh eyes and wonder. It’s impossible to pinpoint when this obsession with vintage bags will end, but until it does I’m totally here for it. What about you? Are you over the ‘what’s old is new again’ trend or are you waiting to see which past bag love returns next? If so let us know which bag you’d like to see make a triumphant return!

OMG THIS!!!

Big bags please! So tired of this mini trend. I love carrying everything and the kitchen sink.

Tumbling

Yes, I want to be able to live out of my bag!

Cory Bryant Brown

Yesssssss!!! Big bags are life!!

SeeJay

So do I!

Lucy Watson Prendergast

Great question! I would love to see the Fendi Spy bag reemerge. Also the Prada Fairy bag!

Bryan Lepe

Eeek. I think we could do without the Prada fairy bag.

It’s probably too early to say this, but the Philo version of the Céline luggage tote. Something about the way the new ones are made / dyed just looks off, and I haven’t seen anyone carry an older luggage (or a luggage in general) in ages.

Margaretha Hæreid

Mulberry postman Lock Tote.

I have a totally different take on the handbag addiction; it’s not about being pricey and high status but being cute, really functional, well made, and cheap. I wonder if your readers might like a blog piece I did recently on my type of handbag nut: https://blameitonlove.wordpress.com/2019/04/09/my-great-love-for-handbagsas-a-weirdoexplained/ You can all save some money sometimes; there are lots of great, adorable bags for under $40…my upper limit is $25. Oh yeah, I’m that cheap.

1.The original Chanel camera bag with the leather entwined chain, in both leather and suede. I always wanted a black or red leather one and a chocolate brown suede one. The newer versions just aren’t the same.
2. The classic Chanel flap in the classic Chanel QUALITY. A flawless bag that captivates you at first look and still shows its beauty and quality years later (assuming you care for it properly)
3. The Delvaux Georges bag with the old Delvaux clip closure and the Delvaux black/brown backpack bag with the same. I love the older Delvaux styles with that classic closure. https://www.pinterest.ch/pin/207236020330671995/
4. The 2004 Tom Ford Gucci Dragon Bag. Every now and then one comes up for resale but is snapped up almost immediately. But not the fur version!

1. The Dior Double Saddle Bag and the small Gaucho bag.
2. LV Multicolor Theda
3. Marc Jacobs small Stam
4. LV Watercolor Speedy
5. Leopard print Dior Gambler

The Dior Bar bag. Not the Open Bar bag, the super structured version that Raf’s Dior came out with in the early 2010s. It’s not vintage (yet), but I always find myself eyeing them whenever they come up on resale sites. They just look so lady-like and streamlined.

Mizantrop

Don’t know if it could ever be a ‘thing’ but I’m quite interested in a new take on Céline old canvas pattern… :]

KaysGramma

Marc Jacobs Stam or any of the early Marc Jacobs “padlock” styles (Stella, Sophia, Blake, Multi-Pocket, etc)

Amazona

Mulberry Alexa and the Bayswater special editions and colors , with the same quality that existed before Emma Hill left M.

I want the bags that do make a comeback to come with wider shoulder straps for comfort. The bag I want for a comeback is Loewe Amazona

ottercat

I would still love to have a Dior Gaucho.

Muse bag from YSL. I’m happy that the Tod’s D styling bag is also back.

The Mulberry Alexa’s comeback is a necessity the world cannot wait anymore!
