For those of us who carry designer accessories, it can be rare that what we’re toting inside our bags is worth more than the bags themselves. Sure, it would cost $600 to replace my cell phone, but my Balenciaga Day Bag in Fall 2007 Violet? Priceless, people. For one metro-Atlanta woman, though, even the ritziest of bags could be had for the value of what she found floating around inside of her purse: A winning lottery ticket.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Rhonda Williams of Fairburn, Georgia, had a lottery ticket worth $189,302 riding around in the bottom of her handbag for almost three months before she realized that she still had it and checked the numbers online. With as many receipts, scraps of paper and (somehow) sunglasses cases as I have in my bag, reading the story prompted me to dump it out and see if there was, say, a gold bar or giant stack of cash that I had forgotten about. I wasn’t as lucky as Ms. Williams, but maybe one of you ladies will find something you’ve forgotten in the bottom of your bag today. You know, besides a Jolly Rancher covered in lint and approximately 42 bobby pins. Not that I had any of those in my purse, of course. If we dumped out your handbag, what would be see?

I am so anal about cleaning out my handbag, this would never happen to me. Well, that and I don’t play the lottery. So, yes, either way, this would never happen to me. But kudos to the woman!

Honey, tons of stuff! Lip balms, makeup pouch, pen pouch, mini box cutter (gangsta! lol), keys, kleenex, loose change, earbuds/ipod, antibac, lotion, sunglasses case, magazines, nook, camera, journal, wallet, checkbook, business card holder, nail polish, phone, and dog toy/treats, extra set of earrings, and a headband. :-) This is why I always carry a huge handbag.

I am too anal about my bag and recipts! Plus I would be stalking the winning lotto numbers to see if I won my million! I would never misplace a ticket!!!

, that’s a lovely happy ending story. Wish it were applicable to me but I change bags daily and therefore dump everything out. The only thing that may escape my scrutiny is a pair of earrings (if small).

Nothing related to the above post..just wanted to point out that the number of typos seem to be increasing in the posts :(

    • Where did you find a typo in this post or others? Let us know – we read and re-read and re-re-read them all.

I take my dog to work with my every day at my law firm, so I am always carting her around – thus, I frequently pull out dog food, dog treats, and/or dog medication in other places where I have no dog in sight, and then I have to explain.

I am super neat with my hanbags. I cant see how this could happen if you change out your bags. Do you just leave the extra trash in the purse or just move all the trash to the new one your about to carry? Why would you buy exspensive bags and then trash them out…
I could see this happening to my husband. He plays the lotto and always throws reciepts, lotto tickets, post it notes, ect.. in his car.

I was excited to find a dollar and a keychain I thought I’d lost at the bottom of my purse. XD I have the same problem with bobby pins and hair clips.

My bag? Hah! Lint. Half-eaten Zone bar. Target receipts. A copy of “Valley of the Dolls.” (Don’t ask.) A makeup bag that suggests I should own stock in Urban Decay. Keys. Camera. (The real kind that uses film.) Wallet. Phone. Pepper spray. Asthma inhaler. God help me if I ever confuse the two! (I think I’ll move the pepper spray to a different area of the bag, now that I think of it.) Two pair of glasses.

But, alas, no lottery tickets, winning or otherwise. Aren’t you glad you asked? :)

    • Musette

Yes! do not confuse them. Remember the scene in Intolerable Cruelty?

I clean out my bag almost every day – removing all those loose papers and such. But I don’t “clean” the bag, of lint, etc. until I change it out.

Sadly, this would never happen to me, either. I am anal about my bags! (And my minivan, too.) No trash, no loose wrappers, tissues, candies, or receipts. Everything in its place. I even have a little ziploc baggie just to hold pens — I would die if one of my precious bags got a penmark on it. Too bad I can’t seem to keep my desk or my kitchen as orderly as my handbags and my car!

Wallet, school keys, personal keys, digital camera, BlackBerry, Photo book, small journal, deodorant, travel-size roll of toilet paper, sons’ basketball schedules, make-up bag that only holds lipstick and mascara, hand sanitizer, money, loose change, various customer loyalty cards, and four different types of lip balm. If the bag is big enough-a book and a fashion magazine for shopping.
I only clean out my bag when I switch them out which is about once a week or every other week.
I felt lucky when I found a $20 bill in a bag that I hadn’t used in about six months.

I am pretty good about cleaning out my bag, it’s my wallet that’s horrible. The paranoid, obsessive compulsive in me makes me keep credit card slips and receipts. Every couple of months, I need to clean my wallet out and throw things out because I can’t close it anymore.

    None of your business.

  • Musette

    uh….license plates?

really. I have a giant Furla (many seasons old) and I had to stop at the DMV and pick up new license plates. Stuck them in the handbag, ran to my next meeting..and the next…2 days later a friend asked “WHY do you have license plates in that gorgeous bag?”

We won’t go into what else is floating around my everyday bags. It’s grim.

My bag is always cleaned out because I switch bags so often! The only thing I keep in every bag is a pen and tissues.
