Back in March Chanel presented its Fall 2019 collection, which was the last under the creative direction of Karl Lagerfeld. Chanel’s newest bag was designed along with Virginie Viard, and it made its debut on the runway of Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. The bag, called the Chanel 19 Bag, is aptly named after its birth year, and it is said to be inspired by the classic 2.55 bag. Like the new 19 Bag, the 2.55 was also named after the year it was created, as the bag was designed by Coco Chanel in February of 1955. When the Chanel 19 Bag first walked the runway last March, it was apparent that this new bag would be a big push for the brand, and now we’ve got the scoop on everything from the bags name, to its current sizes and fabrications.
Created to be both sturdy and supple, the bag features clean lines with a structure that is said to ‘liberate movement’. Classic to Chanel, the original version is crafted of smooth goatskin leather with an exaggerated diamond quilting. The bag is finished with contrasting hardware in both gold and ruthenium, which appears on the bags long chain and leather strap, though the Chanel 19 Bag is also designed to be daintily hand carried via the smaller gold chain. Currently the bag is offered in 4 different sizes: a waist bag, original, large, or maxi (see below for dimensions), and the goatskin leather versions are also featured alongside novelty tweed versions. Incredibly modern in its design and finishing, the Chanel 19 Bag is also classic in its own right, making it an incredibly lust-worthy new design, and the brand’s next possible it-bag. Chanel 19 Waist Bag: 4.3 x 7.8 x 2.1 in
Chanel 19 Flap Bag: 6.2 x 10.1 x 3.5 in
Chanel 19 Large Flap Bag: 7.8 x 11.7 x 3.9 in
Chanel 19 Maxi Flap Bag: 9.8 x 14.0 x 4.3 in
Love the flattened quilting, love the dainty hand strap, love the little shoulder pad at the top of the long strap. But the contrasting hardware…why oh why!?
My pros and cons are: I love the leather entwined “CC” since it provides an extra edge of feminiity; I love the chain, too, for the same reasons. Cons: I’m not really feeling the large quilting since it’s a change from the 2.55 classic and I’m fairly traditional. However, I might give it a go if the cost was aligned in the $3,500-$4,000 price range.
Totally agree on all your points
kinda cheap looking
I agree…to me it doesn’t even appear to resemble leather…it looks almost like plasticy. The large quilts just look cheap and not sophisticated.
Agree. IMO, it looks almost like a knockoff rather than a real Chanel — the quilting looks cheaply done, especially for a bag costing nearly $5k! Plus the chain is too heavy and clunky for the bag, it’s not in balance. The houndstooth is the best of the bunch.
I like the logo, looks very feminine and different. Other than that it looks like a fake you might find on a chinese market place. It looks like all of the features from all C bags have been put into one.
I recently purchased the Chanel Houndstooth in the large (size below jumbo) which is still quite big, but I loved the pattern so much, I couldnt resist 🙂
Could you post any pictures of your beautiful bag, and maybe some modeling shots? It would be much appreciated! 🙂
I will try to post pics of the bag later when I get home. Maybe on the Purse Forum site? In the meantime, if you check aninebing on Instagram she has some great mod shots with the same bag. Medium size which is the one I have
Thanks for the suggestion, it looks really good on the lady you mentioned.
What are your first impressions of it?
I love it! I dont usually go for tweed…but I really liked the houndstooth pattern. It jives well with the hardware. I dont think its heavy at all and is very roomy. I usually carry it by the chain handle as Anine Bing does in her Instagram photos. The longer chain I tuck inside…I’m only 5’1″ so wearing it crossbody in this size is a bit disproportional. I’m very happy with the purchase
Thanks so much for responding. I am looking into making the purchase. I love houndstooth as well
That’s awesome!! I hope you love it as much as I do. I think it’s a great statement piece for fall/winter 🙂
I also went to the instagram post you recommended and I like the tweed, but her bag looks slouchy. It looks like the chain is too heavy which pulls on the bag and creates a misshapen look. I like a bag that keeps it shape whether it sits or I’m holding it. Does this make sense? I’m not sure I explained myself well. I’m just wondering if you experience the same thing? Thx!
I understand what you’re saying. Esp if you have a lot inside the bag it will pull more since the tweed is not that structured. I dont mind the slouchy look that much, but if you do, then it may be a deal breaker. I kinda wish they sold a mini or small version of it…but apparently was not released in the US. Just this size and the maxi/jumbo. I think if it was smaller it wouldnt slouch as much.
I find this bag quite attractive. It’s classic Chanel with a twist. I don’t love the two-color hardware but that’s just me.
It’s too similar to the classic flap. May as well save a bit more and go for a classic.
I personally like the better than the classic flap. Never been much a fan of the classic flap. This bag would definitely be more up my alley than the classic flap.
Totally agree! I’ve got many Chanel bags but only a mini classic flap and it’s because I fell in love with the color. BIG fan of Chanel but never been a fan of the classic flap!!! I’m more of a boy kind of girl. Am I the only one??
I think the classic flap is nice but it is just not my style. That said the boy bag isn’t really my style either. I definitely go for more casual style bags which is why this bag appeals to me more than the classic flap. It has got that Chanel DNA but much more casual then the classic line.
I think the bags are ok, but the CC logo like that looks a bit tacky to me
My thoughts exactly!
Modeling photos would have helped.
I have to say, I don’t like the looseness of the leather..I think it makes the bag look really cheaply made. Likewise the size of the diamonds. The chains are too overwhelming, as well..pick one or the other..both is too much of a good thing. The Chanel logo design is my favorite..I have 4 Chanel bags, but again, using the woven chain motif detracts from the clean lines of the logo.
Not usually an early adopter, I got the large flap in the shade “dark pink”, which can read closer to wine or red, depending on what it’s worn with. It works as an autumnal neutral with my wardrobe. The bag is capacious, light, comfy, squishy-yet-structured. The leather could pass for lamb, but is more durable in the glazed goat. For jewelry matching, I like the dual metals chain long strap and the chunky short chain handle keeps it from being too prim. I’m a fan. (Originally I thought I’d get the maxi flap in white, but that bag is absolutely jumbo and the white is optic white rather than ivory as it looks in pictures. It just looks gigantic in that combo.)
I like it. Looks like the “boy bag’s” softer side!
I do love the new design. I love the dual-color chunky chains but they are so impractical. Over time, the bag shape is going to loosen, the chain is going to overpower the bag, making the leather dent, scuff and stretch. Also, the chain looks super heavy. I stay far away from heavy bags. I am of age where my shoulders pay the price for carrying a heavy bag for the whole day.
I have this bag and I am not a Chanel girl. I usually go for Gucci and more out there bags. I am not a big fan of a classic look so this bag totally spoke to me. I love the large quilting, dual coloured chain and general casual feel of the bag. I bought the large in raspberry (like the picture) and am in LOVE! It is a great bag for someone who isn’t into a classic look, but wants a fun Chanel bag.
Saw it in person. LOVE the lock. The rest is underwhelming. Definitely craving something new as far as bags and this is headed in the right direction.
A casual Chanel classic! The maxi is perfect as a diaper bag for Chanel mommies!
I recently just purchased the 19 and I LOVE it! My style is somewhat edgy, therefore the chunky top handle and the sheen on the bag drew me in, along with the gold CC lock closure! I initially purchased it in the Maxi size (WAY WAY WAAAY too large and overpowering for me) but traded it in for the medium (on Chanels website it is called large, it’s the $5100 one). Its a beauty and the one I purchased is in lambskin, and it’s called “Shiny Black”. It allows me to put in a full size wallet, small makeup pouch, 5 key holder pouch, Galaxy 8 Plus, mini wallet and a small jar of hand cream with some room to spare but I will not add to it. It is a soft structured bag therefore I am careful not to alter the shape. I am looking into purchasing a bag organizer in order to keep its shape better while using the bag and storing it. So happy I was able to receive one. They are becoming hard to get! I had to get on a waiting list!

Yes it’s too clunky. I like the double chain and enlarged logo, but the bag looks used and frumpy.
