Introducing the Highly Anticipated Gucci Jackie 1961

A House staple reimagined with a modern and contemporary twist

When Alessandro Michele sent his Fall 2020 collection down the runway, long-time Gucci lovers rejoiced: the Gucci Jackie was back. The Jackie bag was originally created in 1961 and from its inception it has been a staple for the house, reimagined over the decades in different sizes and iterations. The bag received its name after Jackie Kennedy was spotted carrying it on countless occasions. From its inception, the Jackie bag embodied the jetsetter of the time and was spotted on fashion muses, nobility, and actresses alike.

The signature curved half-moon shape and signature hardware defines the bag and this iteration is very similar to the first from 1961. Because of this, Creative Director Alessandro Michele named this bag the Gucci Jackie 1961. Available for men and women in a diverse range of colors, sizes, and designs which allows for versatile wear, the Jackie is one of the most anticipated releases for Fall 2020.

Alessandro Michele sourced a vintage Jackie bag from his very own archive and set out to make it relevant for today’s wearer with a contemporary twist. This meant offering new sizes (mini, small and medium) as well as a removable and adjustable strap. Michele replicated the strap from his own vintage piece, which allows the Jackie to meld and change to the wearer and occasion at that moment. In addition to the half moon shape, the piston closure is equally as recognizable and important to the design.

As for colors and materials, there is truly something for everyone. There’s the pastel candy hues of light blue, lilac and soft pink which we photographed along with classic solid leather colors. If you are a fan of the GG supreme canvas (which at this moment I can’t get enough of), there’s an option for that as well. The varying sizes, materials, and colors show that this is a bag intended to sit amongst other House staples as a beloved item and the hype and excitement over this bag means Gucci fans agree. The Gucci Jackie never went out of style, in fact the shape and usability of a bag like this is more relevant than ever. The shoulder strap looks too short and thus the bag would fall into the arm pit? That can’t be comfortable.

Vlad Dusil

Each Jackie comes with a strap extension so that you can carry it crossbody!

Heidi

Yes, I discovered this and then reposted, as seen below. ? Also, once again your photography is amazing! Since I’m not able to fly to the coast I lived vicariously through your photography. I could almost smell the ocean and feel the texture of the warm sand underneath my feet! So comforting!

Sparky

Yeah plus it’s very narrow. Won’t fit much before it distorts

Heidi

I went to Gucci.com and these bags come with a longer strap, too.

Thanks for the information and beautiful pictures, the options for colors are adorable. I wonder what do you think about the leather after looking at them closely. It looks likely a kind of box calf… very firm in the consistency but I have maybe missed it and you have already mentioned.
I like this handbag model indeed. I am a great of the Hermes Trim I model ( the first one without zipper and more rounded than the Trim II produced now) more than this Gucci Jackie that it is similar that it is supposed to be a imitation to the Hermes model as Trim I was created in 1958 and Jackie in 1961. I tried to give the creative value to the brand, designer that had come up with an original handbag model, I mean to the first rather to the brands offering variations ( some variation could be great improvement over the original, I can agree), like in science my profession, the first to publish a fabulous novelty is the one that could be awarded a nobel prize, jeje, not the posterior developer.
In that context, there is certain controversy regarding which was the model that Jackie was wearing at the pictures from The Hamptons. As far as I heart from the pictures observations, the model she was wearing was a Trim I, a variant in Barenia and canvas and not a Gucci one. You all maybe known more pieces of this controversy, I will love to hear and know more details about why Gucci take the name in that case. Obviously, the brand is free to select a name for the model but it ends into a confusion. Thanks for information.

Absolutely agree with you! I always thought the Gucci one was the bag Jackie carried but it appears it was indeed the hermes trim. I do think it’s very confusing but most people will not bother actually examining the fact that she never carried any iteration of this bag from Gucci. I sure didn’t until I saw the facts here and did some digging into photos of her wearing the bag and it is not Gucci from what I see.

Mar

She carried both. She had a least a Trim, in toile and gold leather (Barenia), and a few Jackies that she carried quite a bit (some of them look quite battered in the pics).

Laylamiya

Absolutely stunning piece!

Sandy

I love it!!!!

FashionableLena

I like the colors. Love the monogram. However, I will need to see these in person. The leather looks plastic.

tiffany

Not loving the shine on the leather. Otherwise I like the style.

Cheryl Allen

Agree – they look plastic

Canuck65

I agree, would have to see them in person, but the shine on the leather makes them look cheap, in my opinion.

Steph

Love!!! The colors are amazing. I never knew how much I needed a lilac bag.

Gayle

Me too!! Lilac and green are the missing colors in my bag collection. I have a vintage gucci hobo bag similar to the jackie although it has a zipper. My mom has a vintage jackie in the signature gg canvas.

Tiffany

Stunning photography – was this a Vlad special?? I *love* the artistry with the chair and beach. Kudos!!!!

Vlad Dusil

Yes, thank you for the kind words. The setting puzzled some onlookers who were out enjoying the evening on the beach…

Lori

Which came first, the Jackie or the Hermes Trim? It’s crazy how similar they both are. But both are fantastic. I love this retro look as this is the first Gucci I would consider buying in years.

Canuck65

would be great article comparing the two and to tell more about their history.

Giselle

There is an argument that Jackie Kennedy carried Hermes Not Gucci.

Sandy

Look it up on the internet, so many pictures of Jackie Kennedy and the Gucci Jackie bag.

BagLover

I just looked…i thought the same but it actually appears to be the hermes trim. Then a few years later Gucci copied the design perhaps as an homage to her…

Mar

She carried both. There are pictures of her carrying a Trim one in toile and leather. Then there are pics of her carrying several Jackie bags. She carried these a lot. The bag was not named after her when launched in 1961, it was actually called the Constance. It was named Jackie after she was so often seen with one (it would have been quite ridiculous otherwise)

Kat

I think you are right. I was doing some research on this and discovered the same, but I didn’t go into a lot of depth. Maybe PB can write a fun, informative article about this.

Nan

I had an appt. with my Hermes S.A. today and saw the Hermes Trim. She said they are bringing it back after 10 years. It was nice and I liked the hardware better than the Gucci hardware.

Susana Cristobal

I can recommend it. I have a Trim I, the first model in a brilliant color and I use many times every summer. My bag is around 50 years old now and it is in perfect conditions. I love the model is timeless, comfortable, luxurious and very versatile at the same time but I agree that it is expensive. Last time I showed the price at Hermes web was 47.700 SEK that is around 5.400 USD.

Susana Cristobal

I have checked and the Hermes page said that the Hermes Trim I was created and released in 1958 and in this article Megs has witten that the Gucci Jackie was from 1961so Hermes was first.

I read articles about it and some pictures that could support the idea that at least the handbag from summer at the Hamptons were most likely a Trim I and not the Jackie.
I am trying to add the pictures to show Jackie with the bag but it said that I should log in and I think that I am .

Francesca Romana

The Jackie actually came out in 1958 but was renamed in 1961 in honour of Jackie Kennedy as she loved the bag and wore it all the time.

fran123

Should be about 1/3 of the price. Just insane for the size.(especially for a Gucci) I have one from not that long ago that was under $1000 and its a tote with a zipper. Honestly I’m curious who the heck is buying bags right now anyways?? We are all home 24/7 until January at least. Kid has home school and no sports. I have no where to even wear a bag.

HappyFace313

🙂 I’ve heard many times by Hermès employees that Hermès` Trim bag – which looks almost identical – was worn by Jackie O. before she used the Gucci bag.
Is this a myth?

Anyway, I love the lilac color of the new “Jackie 1961” Gucci bag! 🙂

I like the classic look of these simple yet stunning bags. No giant screaming logos, no crazy patterns. Just a simple classic looking bag. And the colours are fun with a couple of standard plain colours too. Hooray
