One of my favorite things about Fendi is that I never feel like I know what direction the brand will go in next. At the creative helm, Karl Lagerfeld has created a dizzying world of theme-and-variations handbags that build on a solid structural foundation every season before riffing on the hits with embellishments, appliques, textiles, trims and beyond. Fendi’s Spring 2018 bags take that idea and a somewhat neutral direction, basing everything in cream and tan, along with muted shades of blue, green and peach.
With those shades, Fendi remixes the Peekaboo and Kan I bags in plaid and the traditional Fendi logo print, and to the assortment it adds two new shapes: a bucket bag and a round-handled fine mesh tote, which looks to me like a beach bag. It feels a bit odd to see a brand debut a new bucket bag now when so many designers opted to join the frenzy a couple years ago, but Fendi may have been wise to wait it out a bit and ensure the trend would transition into a mainstay of modern wardrobes, which it largely has.
