ALERT: A new Chanel Price Increase is slated for July 1st with increases up to 15%!
We heard rumblings of the 2021 Chanel price increase that were fairly solid back in December and got confirmation that the prices would go up today, January 15th, 2021. Indeed, Chanel rolled out its new prices today and now the Chanel bag you’ve been lusting after costs even more.
How much more you wonder?
We have the breakdown of all of the new Chanel prices on a wide variety of Chanel bags, from Classic Bags, to the Boy Bag, to the Gabrielle, to the Chanel 19, and more.
While the price increase for 2020 was hit with far greater percentage increases across the board, this latest price increase could be considered more reasonable than the last, with a 4-7% range for majority of items. However, when the prices start as high as they do for Chanel, that still means a $300-$400 hike on many items.
This increase affected the classics, from the actual Chanel Classic Flaps to the other cornerstone bags. The most expensive leather iconic bag for the house is now the the Maxi Chanel Flap Bag which retails for $8,000. Below we have a comprehensive look at the old and new prices of Chanel bags for easy comparison:

$8000 is also how much it will cost to paint my house. I’d rather paint the house.
I totally get that Chanel might not be for everyone, but the constant comparison of Chanel vs Hermes make no sense. Chanel bags are completely different bags from Hermes. Hermes are beautifully simple and Chanel are classic because of the quilting, the colors and the chains. I don’t wear my Chanels at all the same way or places my Hermes. Both companies make amazing bags and both are crazy expensive .
The comparisons discussed are typically that Chanel’s prices are inching closer to the price of Hermes bags, but lack the quality of Hermes bags. Also, the after service for Chanel is only 5 years while Hermes has no limit.
Exactly, the design elements are different.
Agreed. The comparison is ridiculous.
If you read about Hermès bags there are complaints as well. Some of the comments here seem to reflect that every Hermès owner is completely happy with their purchase and that is simply not true. The others comment that made me smile is there are so many Chanel for resale, well, there are a lot of Hermès bags too!
Of course. Both brands have issues. In fact, all brands have issues.
A jumbo flap is my dream bag but I doubt I will ever buy one, unless I find a good price on a pre-loved one in good condition. These prices are just beyond insane now.
I don’t know why someone hasn’t thought to make a go fund me type of platform for people and their dream bag purchases, where someone tells their story, their ultimate wish for a holy grail bag, etc etc. So many women out there I know would chip in to make it happen for the loveliest of those out there who just can’t ever quite get to the place of affording one. That would be more fun than buying for myself – watching someone else get their dream bag.
I would love someone to buy me my dream bag 😛
You must be out of your mind. A Go Fund Me to help pay for someone’s luxury handbag? Uh…no.
Maybe it’s just REALLY fun giving someone else joy? IDK. Certainly fun for me!
You are kidding right? When people losing their houses and their kids to ravaging illnesses request monetary support on go fund me type platforms, support people who are trying to live beyond their means in a materialistic nightmare? This must the the epitome of skin crawling capitalist nightmare! Are you a proud Trump supporter?
What the hell is wrong with you! I would love to do this for someone else. I get so many bags all the time that the luster wears off for me. It would be fun to watch someone else get their dream bag. And whether you agree with HOW people spend their money, this site and tpf are places where many people save up, even for years, and at the sacrifice of maybe someone like you would call responsible spending, to do something that brings them joy. Why on earth the judgment? And so you identify a supposed Trump supporter as…a person who thinks helping someone buy a holy grail bag would be fun? I know it’s a holiday but stop drinking this early & maybe scroll through another site that feeds your dysthymic POV.
Take me shopping! ?
I think that’s a beautiful idea, don’t pay attention to that bitter comment
I have shelves full of designer bags – Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, etc. But the concept of doing a Go Fund Me for a luxury item that is not a necessity, I just can’t wrap my head around. I’d contribute to a Go Fund Me to help pay someone’s medical expenses, college tuition, moving expenses for a job, and to someone who just lost their job. But a handbag? I just can’t.
Why not do it all?
You bring up an excellent point! She wants to buy someone a bag, but maybe their needs are greater than a bag. She stated “I get so many bags all the time that the luster wears off”. She could take the money she’d spend and donate it to a food bank where the need is greater than it has been in years. Or, pay someone’s rent, pay daycare for a Mom so she can work, buy gifts for children who didn’t get Christmas gifts since their parent’s were unemployed. The possibilities are endless and her benevolence would be appreciated by those in dire need.
I already give all of those things away and more, including working pro bono for the homeless population in my clinical capacity. This would just be something fun & different I think. I bought my mother’s housekeeper a LV in 2019 & an Hermes last year, things she’d been talking about for years now, and I cannot tell you the fun I had watching her open those things. So, just because I think it’s a fun idea to give people a holy grail bag, by no means that indicates I don’t do all of the other, and more. I do it all.
I think this would be the thrill of a lifetime for someone. I couldn’t imagine how I would feel. I think it’s a amazing idea, but maybe find a different avenue. Hey there’s a great idea create a app based off wants.
This was such an interesting discussion to read! I think if you have the means to give, do however you choose! Ive always appreciated the chance youtubers give subscribers to win things, but in no way EXPECT them to do so as an example. Its a beautiful gesture for both parties, and i think it would be hugely appreciated by the winner. Im not sure a go fund me per se would be the correct avenue but hey, why not? Its up to the givers to give isnt it?
Regardless of how anyone feels about this I think that it’s a wonderful gesture! I know many people that would be thrilled to receive a designer bag since otherwise they would never have the means or the opportunity.
@Amanda L. You can get a very nice pre loved jumbo flap, in very good condition, priced in the high $3000’s pretty much anywhere these days, if you do your due diligence. Most will not even need additional care/attention (Chanel Dr). I would start with Fashiophile, (as they have a 2 month layaway plan) or Rebag, What Goes Around Comes Around, The Luxury Closet, Yoogis Closet. I would also do an extensive search on IG for #prelovedchanel.
I’m not sure why, maybe because of the smaller handbag craze? But I often see jumbo’s priced lower than the smaller chanels bags.. Just my $.02 ??
Yes the small handbag craze is real but it’s not for me. The larger bags are typically less expensive on resale sites than their smaller counterparts. I’m finding the prices on resale sites are higher if you want excellent condition but you can still find jumbos for $2k-$2500 less than retail. I just ordered a boy in the new medium from fashionphile in excellent condition for $800 under retail. Not a huge discount I know, but it comes with everything so for me it was acceptable. You can also find great deals at consignment shops, especially ones that don’t have a presence in your state and you can avoid sales tax sometimes. I found a jumbo in like new condition that I may pull the trigger on soon and it’s $2400 under the current retail price in a Florida consignment shop.
This is getting ridiculous.. If I have to pay 8000 for a Chanel, I might as well get an Hermes by saving some more..
lol but hermes is super difficult to get
If they’re going to be charging Hermès/Delvaux prices, they need to start having Hermès/Delvaux quality control and customer service.
the prices for these premium brand bags aren’t really meant to reflect their overall quality, cost or durability. its meant to reflect their exclusivity and brand power. increasing prices for chanel instead of offering discounts or online accessibility secures the exclusivity of the brand. if the demand for chanel bags still remain the same or increase due to price increase then it means that chanel’s strategy is working out in their favor.
there are many bags out there that cost less than 1k for a bag that matches the leather quality of a hermes or chanel. imo its the brand and exclusiveness that people are buying.
ps. people buy hermes because its a hermes and its exclusive
100%!
their quality is getting worse and worse. my 2.55 which has been purchased for less than 4 mo. and rarely used has started to see fading hardware
true. Their customer service is mediocre at best.
Even your new prices in the US is cheaper than in France!!!
A medium Timeless Classic Flap bag in the medium size is, now at your new price is 6800$US = 5620,85€.
The actual price of a Timeless Classic Flap bag in the medium size is 6050€!!!
How is that it’s more expensive in France for the same bag????!!!!
You have to add sales tax, which is not included in the price. Also unlike Europe, you cannot get a sales tax refund when you leave the country.
Add the VAT refund of aprox 10% in France… that makes purchasing in Europe always more attractive.
Yes but the price listed here doesn’t include our sales tax, in ny it is 8.875%. That brings our cost higher.
This is frankly ridiculous. Why does a machine made Chanel cost almost as much as a hand crafted artisan birkin? Their customer service is also pitiful. I’m truly bewildered.
And on another note there is never any justification behind these price increases. Absolutely appalling.
You cannot get a Birkin off the shelf in most cases. The price of a Birkin in reality is the price of the bag + everything else you’ve had to buy in order to be offered a Birkin, which ends up being almost double the price of the actual bag.
Profit, profit and profit. People are willing to queue for hours to buy so-called luxury. It is not luxe if you have to queue IMO. It is just super expensive mainstream.
It’s not mainstream. The vast majority of any population cannot afford luxury
I wrote “super expensive mainstream”.
I am so glad I have kept my White Caviar Maxi. The issue now is should you sell it or not (of course for a way higher price)
In the same boat – have a red metallic maxi and am on the fence about selling it. Thinking that I will wait until late summer when I can see how many maxi’s are released in the US. Pretty sure I will make more than my initial investment back.
Katie, Do you have an Instagram account? What’s your username, I will DM you about the maxi if you want to sell! ??????Or you can DM me @emmveemommie whatever you prefer! ??
Hello Katie, Can you share pictures of your red metallic maxi ? I’ve been hunting for one. If it’s in excellent condition, hey I might just buy from you 🙂 I’m a serious potential buyer based in the US.
What web sites do you use to sell? The ones that I’ve tried looking into charged enourmous commission.
Yikes… time to save a little bit more for an Hermès
I’m having a hard time understanding this. I love Chanel, been buying for 14 years.. but the quality has declined and they want to charge more for that? I guess it’s time to move on.
I really wish I just pulled the trigger on a 19 two years ago when I fell in love. Now, it’s just not worth it.
Also, I’m tired of seeing reseller sites charge just as much for a used product, sometimes more, and we’re not talking about exclusive or highly limited pieces.
Wow. I’m sitting on a gold mine! Lol I can most likely resale my prestine Chanel bags for the price I paid. I do love me some Chanel, but not at these “CRAZIER” prices! At the end of the day, it is just a hand bag! Also, how many bags do I need!? Lol. This is insane! HERMES will be a better investment at the rate these prices are headed.
Only if you purchase classic Hermès bags (Birkin, Kelly, etc.). The majority of Hermès bags have terrible resale value compared to their retail price.
Accurate. I was looking at Hermes Jypsiere, which retails for about $9K, but saw a brand new one in a consignment store for $3,500.
I have a jypsiere and bought resale. It’s a bag that wears quickly, so I would recommend saving the money and buying resale.
Really, it is not that durable? I love the design of it!
I’m not surprised. For those who love Hermès beyond the cult-favorite bags—but have a limited budget, great bags can be found at significant discounts on the second-hand market.
I agree. After the increases last year I decided to simply invest in Hermes where the quality is superior.
Does anyone know if it was only in the Us or was it in Europe too? ?
Price have been up as well in Europe (+200€ for each bag)
Thank you ?
Feeling like a genius purchasing several classics and reissues when they were half or less than the current prices..??
I bought my first Louis Vuitton bag 20+ years ago and I paid $800 for it… which is the price of a medium wallet today. ??? I should have bought a truck load of them back then!
The Gabrielle sizes are super confusing now… I have one when it was launched and it was called Medium but now the style code match with what it is called ‘Large’ right now…
Chanel tends to do that – rename sizes when they add new sizes which makes it hard to figure our which size you actually have
HI! I see the cost of the classic WOC as $2650 (not 2575 on the Chanel website). love your site! thank you for always updating
Aaarrrgh! They’ll be even higher, here in Canada!
I’m confused why the Gabrielle continues to rise because few people seem to carry it. Also, 2 years ago, for Christmas, my husband gifted me the Classic Maxi Flap for $6,000 K and now it’s $8,000K? I need to buy Chanel stock! (If only it was made public). ?
When I was in Paris in 2019, it was $6500, and I believe it was about $7k here in the states. I was considering getting a Boy bag, but I couldn’t justify, in my mind, spending $5500 on that bag, so I went to Givenchy and bought the Antigona.
Ridiculous. They’re trying so hard to reach Hermes price points without any of the quality.
Hermès is not immune to quality issues and their products (which I own and love) require quite a bit of care.
The reason they’re raising prices there is flood of used Chanel bags online you can get and they look the same because their style is relatively the same . So few people buying new bags from store so they need to raise prices for the lack of sales they’re making . I can get a flap bag from 1990 and can be same as 2020. They’re 19 flap is horrible design . It’s like they wanted to take something from bottega as far as pillowy look and someone told them mixed metals were in so they added some ugly hardware. It looks like a bad fake . I love handbags for quality of them and design adding something to my outfits . Not because they’re ridiculously expensive with lack of quality . F Chanel at this point . I’ll rather go buy Hermès
Not a shill for Chanel but this is not correct. Chanel are now quietly posting their financial reports for the year ending 31 December on the website. The one for 2020 will be posted soon. The company is more profitable than ever and they are doing incredibly worldwide.
Chanel don’t mind losing customers who are not profitable. It’s very simple.
From what I’ve read and heard, it’s a toss up between the Chanel 19. It’s like cilantro, people either love it or hate it. I hate the 19 bag too. It’s ugly and not at all classy. Putting the Chanel logo on this style bag is the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig IMO. But to each their own…
Chanel 19 is so beloved by many including myself as a current, creative, and last original design by Karl. Your opinion is not a majority of Chanel 19. My collection of Chanel, Hermes, LV is extensive. The Chanel 19 is by far my most favorite. So many compliments from strangers when I’m carrying her.
do you find it heavy to carry around? just out of curiosity as I tried a Chanel 19 at the store and thought it was a cute look but wasn’t sure if it’s too heavy to use as an everyday bag
Is his true? It seems to me if people aren’t buying bags at their current prices then how will Chanel sell more by raising prices?
Exactly that didn’t make any sense!
so there is no price increase for coco handle?
No, not that we have seen!
This is insane! I think I’m happy with my collection for now. I don’t think I’ll be buying any Chanel anytime soon! Thank goodness I didn’t sell one of them when my friend wanted to buy one of my jumbo.
The lady in the illustration reminds me of Trinny Woodall 🙂
Every time Chanel raises their prices we get an article with 50+ comments on how ridiculous it’s getting and people are going to stop shopping Chanel and go to Hermès and yet here we are doing it once more. See you guys in a year to do this all again.
I stopped buying Chanel bags after they stopped making the GST. Now I just buy Chanel shoes. And I try to buy my Hermes bags preloved.
??????
What kind of maniac would pay $8,000 for a maxi? This strategy is obviously working for Chanel, so good on them, and I understand why they keep doing it. What I don’t understand are the customers. You’re not paying for quality or customer service with Chanel, so I suppose it’s exclusivity. In that case, a classic flap should be at least moderately difficult to attain (that is, of course, the allure of a Birkin). It’s not difficult at all.
