Chanel, synonymous with luxury and timeless elegance, has unveiled a bag that beautifully intertwines its storied past with contemporary fashion dynamics. While officially dubbed the “Nano Shopping Bag,” this new release from the Fall/Winter ’23/’24 runway unmistakably carries the essence and design nuances reminiscent of an iconic Chanel bag from the past.
Chanel shoppers have taken to social media and called this bag the Chanel Kelly, if you want to refer to it as anything, it should be the Chanel Nano.
Speaking of names, unless part of one of the cornerstone bag families, Chanel rarely names a bag and rather defines it by the style number, which is how shoppers sometimes wind up giving a name to the bags themselves!
The original Hermès Kelly bag, with its quintessential elegance, has long been a prized possession for many in the fashion world. While Hermès’ version stands as a hallmark, Chanel introduced its own take in the 80s and 90s that evoked similar allure.
This updated version of the bag is part of Chanel’s “Nano Shopping” theme within its Fall-Winter 2023/24 Ready-to-wear collection and walked the runway. It immediately grabbed the attention and admiration of Chanel lovers thanks to its archival elements with a new spin.
Echoes of a Bygone Era
The very recognizable top-handle design of the Nano bag is synonymous with luxury and poise. The distinct handle, often referred to as the ‘Kelly handle,’ became emblematic of a particular style era. It’s ladylike and demure, with a structured shape and handheld carry. This updated Chanel release, while charting its own course, cannot help but remind enthusiasts of that signature design.
However, Chanel’s current incarnation stands apart. While vintage inspirations are clear, the bag is a distinct entity, bringing modern design elements.
Design Evolution and Noteworthy Features
- Prominent Quilting: The signature Chanel quilting is bolder, offering a tactile sensation and an enhanced visual appeal.
- Modernized Fastening: The tab closure offers a contemporary flair, deviating from the full flap of the original.
- Handle Dynamics: The once slender handle of the vintage version now has more heft. The enlarged top handle offers a playful disproportion against the bag’s small frame.
- Material and Lining: Featured on the F/W ’24 runway, it comes in shiny aged calfskin and jersey, both complemented by a full leather lining.
- Versatility in Carrying: The bag features flat leather handles and a crossbody leather and chain strap. The chain can be fully tucked in, offering users the option to hand-carry the bag, or worn over the shoulder or crossbody. It is not removable, however.
- Small but Mighty: While compact, the interior does offer a zip pocket and an open flat pocket (each of these can fit a of couple credit cards and ID)
The New Sizes and Prices
Offered in two sizes, the photographed version (pictured here, AS4416) is part of Chanel’s handbag lineup, measures 5.1” x 7.4” x 2.7”, and retails at $4,400.
A more compact version (AP3435), part of Chanel’s small leather goods (SLG) line, stands at 3.2” x 4.9” x 1.5” and has a price point of $3,000.
In Conclusion
Chanel’s latest addition bridges the gap between nostalgia and contemporary fashion demands. The design elements from the past are unmistakable, but this bag has a new spin (and a very excited group of aficionados waiting to purchase). If you think it looks recently familiar, Margot Robbie wore it not once, but twice, during her Barbie premiere press junket.
This new bag will be available in early to mid-September at select Chanel boutiques nationwide. Contact your local boutique or call (800) 550-0005.
It looks like Lady Dior and LV Capucines had a baby and dressed it in a Chanel onesie.
Fabulous! And funny 😆
🤣🤣
Longchamp!
Proportions are horrid. Handles too thick/flat,especially when contrasted with the leather-entwined chain strap and the bag’s small size, and the CC turnlock is located too far down on the flap. At least the ’90s version got something right.
I don’t like the handles either but that clasp makes up for it
This looks like a fake bag….
Ohhhhh I love it!!! Calling my SA in the am!
You act like you’re special. I’m calling my sales associate in the morning. If you drop $3-$4k on a bag, you need to reevaluate your priorities. This is why people hate individuals like yourself when so many people can’t afford rent, groceries, etc., in this horrible economy. Why don’t you drop $280k on a Bentley while you’re at it!?
Take your negativity somewhere else. What is wrong if she wants it and can afford it
Agree
LOL are you alright? Check where you’re posting babe. Hope OP got the bag she wanted. She’s not acting like she’s special she’s living her life. Unfortunately her everyday norm is something that will forever be unattainable for you, and you will always be jealous of.
I already pre-ordered mine and then got picked up in my Cullinan. 465K price tag on that car, stay angry 😉
Interesting how this person has vanished
So rude. What is wrong w you?
What are you even doing on purseblog of you feel this way about people buying bags?
Jelly much?
in the wise words of Taylor Swift…”you need to calm down”
Find something more to your liking, if this is so offensive to you. I can’t figure out why you’re even here
Ummm why are you on this article? Hate much?
Why are you on this blog, if I may ask? Isn’t the whole point of being here is to enjoy the latest and greatest designer LUXURY bags. Yes, I agree that some bags are way out of line with their pricing however, if someone has the means and is in love with what they see, it is really none of your business and downright rude to put him/her down for it. Please leave if you have nothing positive to offer.
Not sure what type of comments you’d expect on a site dedicated to designer bags, accessories, and shopping in general. Just because someone loves a designer item does not mean they don’t offer help in other areas. And even if they didn’t, it’s up to us how we live and spend our money. If you don’t want to buy a designer bag, don’t!
Why are you on a dedicated handbag website if people spending money on it bothers you so much?! Get a life!
Why are you in a luxury bag blog then? Why don’t you stay in gofundme.com and help the less fortunate instead of ejaculating sour comments at people who just love bags.
Cute, but the Chanel Lambskin Party Kelly from the late 90s is much cuter!
I love that Party Kelly!
My lord is that ugly!!
This bag looks like a cake version of a handbag. “Is it cake?!” LOL. Or was designed by the designers 5 year old with crayons. Sorry, I am not a huge Chanel fan.
It’s nice! Crazy but at $3000.00 and $4400.00 almost seems a good price, for Chanel anyway!
Looks too close to The Lady Dior bag.
This bag has literally nothing in common with the Hermès Kelly. This blog post is totally pointless.
But yet, here you are…🧐
That wasn’t at all the main point of the post – the old name for this similar style was also Kelly, and we’d be remiss to note that brands had similar design elements from other bags. Plus, first thing you think of when you hear Kelly and it comes to bags is Hermès, so it felt right to note that!
This was absolutely understandable.. and there is even a distant reminiscence of the old Kelly by chanel and the H Kelly.
Yes – the name kind of calls for, at the very least, a mention 🙂
Yet again, I get a granny vibe from a Chanel bag. The design house’s bags always skew old lady to me.
I have a camel Chanel party lambskin from the 90s. The sharp corners have caused the soft leather to wear down, but other than that, it’s still beautiful and I take it out for weddings. They should offer this in caviar for everyday usage.
I’ve seen other people asking about Caviar leather as well – it would definitely make it more durable!
“Design queues”?
That was my fault. I fixed it.
It’s cute, but my eyes keep being drawn to the wrinkling/indentation of the leather where the handles are attached to the bag, and the dents the flap have already made on the quilts beside the turn lock. Yikes
This bag is a sample, which is only intended for press use and gets really really used – so that could have something to do with it!
It’s adorable!
I had that caviar black Kelly handle bag a few years ago…. Obviously I don’t have it now.
I have a caviar business affinity which is now my sole C bag, it’s so versatile.
As for this new Kelly style, I can’t get past that thick handle. It’s a big no from me, solely due to that handle.
i kinda like the old vintage grandma look to this bag – very cute!
Very cute. I hope Tory Burch makes a dupe.
I can’t unsee the folded Longchamps
It is beautiful! 🩷
I think it’s cute, but kind of similar to the coco handle so don’t need both….or do I? 🫣☺️
What colors will be available?
I love love love this new Chanel! I am so looking forward to adding this to my collection!
Love Chanel but no, this is awful , and please no more Barbie.
Does anyone know when this drops in store?
Congratulations Juju on your new expensive bag. U got two promotions in one year woohoo 🎉.
