As handbag lovers, we’ve seen some pretty outlandish bags walk down runways and appear on our computer screens. Remember the $2,000 Balenciaga Ikea shopping bag? Or what about Gucci’s Mickey Mouse head bag? While big name designers have released their fair share of ‘made you look’ designs, it’s often smaller, indie brands that are the most innovative. When 18-year-old singer/songwriter Billie Eilish posted an image to instagram fans were in awe of her bag— it appeared to be Gucci, but it also appeared to be a basketball?
The bag was designed by UK based brand TOMME, which combines ‘Femme,’ ‘Homme’ and ‘Tomboy’ to make TOMME. The brand is said be representative of someone who connects femininity and masculinity with ease and confidence, therefore expressing the best of both worlds. In 2018, after much experimentation and innovation, a fully functional handbag came to life and the 3.0 Basketball bag was born.
Each bag is made to order and can take up to 4 weeks to create. The bags are all handcrafted from real basketballs, and the brand utilizes different colors and sizes, including limited edition basketballs. The brand has also offered limited edition drops of tennis ball bags (hello Chanel), and prices in the collection range from $129 to $341. As for the Gucci iteration? TOMME’s website states that it is an imitation and not real Gucci print. There’s a fine line between imitation and counterfeit, and while the brand’s work is incredibly innovative, using Gucci’s iconic print for inspiration could possibly be called out as counterfeiting.
