A Closer Look at the Balenciaga Neo Classic Bag

The newest B-Bag is here and it comes in a mini size too!

For fall 2020, Demna Gvasalia has taken Balenciaga’s most recognizable house codes and introduced a fresh take on the brand’s most classic bags. The Neo Classic Bag celebrates 20 years of Balenciaga’s famed bags, which were created by none other than Nicholas Ghesquiere. The new silhouette puts a fresh, modern spin on a design that has stood the test of time. While we first introduced you to the bag last month, it is now available via Balenciaga.com and we’re taking a closer look at its many variations.

The updated silhouette is a more structured, top handle carryall with a zippered closure featuring Balenciaga’s iconic moto studs and braided handle detailing. On its runway, the brand showed multiple iterations of its large Neo Classic bag, but we now have a further look at the collection’s other two sizes.

The version we’re most excited to discover in this collection is for the mini-lovers out there! It is reminiscent of both the Hourglass bag and a classic City bag. Though this design is an ode to the City bag, which is beloved by many in its nano size, this mini version functions a bit differently due to its structure.

With overall dimensions of 5.5″L x 8.6″W x 4.3″D and a much less slouchy silhouette than the original nano City, the Neo Classic Mini Top Handle won’t hold all that much. However, this bag will work nicely for the tiny bag lover who can streamline what it is that they carry. An interior card slot pocket in the bag does allow for its user to skip a wallet, which will save some space, and a top zip keeps your belongings secure.

The details though are what really make the bag, and it’s these iconic house codes like the braided leather handle, classic long leather zipper-pull and moto hardware that really celebrate the City bag. True to the originals, which have been seen in hundreds of iterations over the years, there are a few different options of the mini. The bag comes in both smooth and croc embossed calfskin and 3 different hardwares are seen throughout the collection as well—matte, gold and silver are all options. The mini retails for $1,890 via Balenciaga.

The next size up, which is in between the mini and the large, also has a removable strap for shoulder or cross-body wear. Larger in size, it features the Neo Classic’s new structured trapezoidal shape and iconic detailing. With overall dimensions of 12.9″H x 8.2″W x 6.”D it is more appropriate in size for everyday wear and is a good in between option. The small retails for $2,290 via Balenciaga.

Lastly, the version we’ve seen on the brand’s fall 2020 runway and here on PurseBlog last month, the Neo Classic Large Top Handle is the only bag in the collection that functions strictly as a top handle. It is quite large, and with overall dimensions of 13.3″L x 21.2″ W x 9.4″ D this bag can truly carry it all. There are multiple iterations of the large as well, which retails for $2,490 via Balenciaga.
