The Stella McCartney Falabella Tote first gained favor over a year ago when celebrities as varied as Rihanna and Kate Hudson began sporting the simple, biker-chic faux leather bag with every kind of outfit you could imagine. Many variations on the Falabella theme have followed, and now that we’re on (by my count) the third season rotation of these chain-trimmed purses, one has to wonder when McCartney will run out of ideas.

I can’t tell the future, but unfortunately, inspiration didn’t run out before someone suggested making a crochet version of the bag, which you can see at left. Or, come to think of it, maybe it did, because this iteration isn’t exactly inspired.

At first I assumed that most of my distrust of this bag originated in my general hatred for all things crocheted, macraméd or otherwise hippie-inspired (and that hatred is fierce!), but the longer I look at it, the more I think that it simply doesn’t work on any level. We all know what this bag looked like when the design was originally conceived, and changing the mood so drastically without changing the structure or dominant trim just makes it look like McCartney’s accessories people were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Instead of creating an interesting contrast, the tough chain and soft, vintage-looking cream knit look mismatched and ill-suited for the same outfit, let alone the same design. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $2165. Yes, I double-checked the price. It appears to be correct, insofar as charging more than two grand for this thing could ever be considered “correct.”

That is hideous. The flowers dangling off from mismatched places . . . no.

  • ob la di ob la da

i actually adore it and think this is a cute spinoff but yeah, $2k is a bit absurd for this.

  • Tali

Such a marvellous idea for a crochet DUY project! I saw chains like that in a building materials kind of shop)

  • Andre

This is expensive because it’s a handmade work. It’s not easy or fast to make it. But I love crochet for the new season.

  • Julie

I LOVE it!!! But…not the price tag!

  • mary s

heck i could crotch that and charge less than $40.

as a rule if a bag is sometime i can make myself in an afternoon. it gets an F minus. and despite the fact that it LOOKS homemade and tacky (as opposed to “handmade and innovative or retro” ) and it goes for an obscene $2k, some people will buy it.

    • mary s

typo:i could crochet that, not “crotch” it LOL!

  • Mademoiselle Arantèle

Nice bag! If you like crochet bags, have a look on mlle-arantele.com, it’s cheaper

  • Vitta

Wow, only $2,165 for a tacky, home-made, afternoon project? If you don’t know what to do with your money, you might as well just throw it into the wind, if you don’t believe in charity.

  • Lalena

Even using a large gauge crochet thread, a bag that size would not be an ‘afternoon project’. It is, however, utterly hideous. All but the most determined or well paid crocheter would want to poke her eyes out before finishing all those rows of boring double or triple crochet. The ugly motifs scattered all over it remind me of barnacles.

  • Stylista

I like this because it shows that crochet can be nice! It doesn’t have to be dowdy or grandma-ish.

If you remove the weird dangly baubles then the bag would be a nice summer addition for 500 dollars. I dont understand how Stella thinks she can charge prices that border on insanity for non leather. Who on earth would be down with that?

  • edoardo

I lvoe the bag of Stella…especially this one has a lovely sense of spring!

Stella McCartney bags are the most overpriced thing I’ve seen. I would never buy one, neither faux leather nor crochet.

  • Karin bag4bag

It is not logical, but I like this bag… Bag purchases are emotional, visual and instinctive ! The chain around the bag looks like zipper teeth, its edgy against the soft cream texture of the bag. There is a simplicity in its colour and design. It works for me, but I totally understand why some people would hate it.

  • dina wright

i adore this bag…and anything done by stlla actually! this can go dressy or casual…LUV LUV LUV it

  • PhotoGirl

    What the. . .???
I knit and crochet, and while I can appreciate the intricate and time consuming nature of the work involved,I still think this bag is utterly dreadful and definitely not worth $2100. (And remember: the person who did the handwork is not, in all likelihood, getting the lion’s share of that money.) Can you imagine how filthy this bag would be after just one or two uses? I hope Stella isn’t becoming as arrogant as this bag seems to indicate. That would be so sad.

    Love handmade work. (ipad)

  • Jen

Ehh… Too much going on here. (ipad)

  • helen

The crochet is pretty, but I think the chain does something to it. I suppose without the chain it would be ordinary? (ipad)

  • swati

none of the Stella McCartney bags justify their price tags ….. by a long shot …….

….. and this one is just plain awful …. to pair something as delicate as crochet with chains …. urghh (ipad)
