I’ve been excited for Coach’s Spring 2015 handbags to arrive ever since I saw them at the brand’s runway show back in September; the collection felt modern and light-hearted, like it could bridge the gap between the brand’s longtime fans and the fashion-forward audience that Coach hopes to attract. The collection also includes the brand’s latest artist collaboration, Coach x Baseman.
The Baseman bags, which feature adorable little monsters, are the fashion bait of the collection, meant to appeal to a consumer group that watches runway trends and wants to buy things that are weird, distinctive and limited-edition. There has already been a notable response to these bags and the rest of the Coach x Baseman line, so it seems like cute beasties are a bet that will pay off.
For a more mainstream customer, the collection also debuts a new marquee bag style for the brand, the Swagger. It’s an East-West tote that currently comes in three sizes, and although it’s not innovating any new territory or starting any new trends, the execution and options are solid. In particular, the mini metallics are a lot of fun.
“Fun” is probably the best word to describe everything that’s going on with this collection, actually. The colors are pastel without being too sweet, and the details and embellishments elevate the bags without making the designs seem self-serious. For Stuart Vevers’ second full collection with the brand, there’s been a lot of growth.
Check out a selection of the bags below or shop the full collection, including shoes and clothing, via Coach.
Ewoks? Care Bear’s gone bad? Gremlins?
Are they trying to copy Givenchy Antigona Rottweiler/Podium tote?
if so they are doing it badly
hahahaha ohhh im laughing too hard
In all fairness, every brand/designer copies off one another these days.
No after no…
The creature bags are horrible – they are not playful or cute – just creepy and ugly. As for the rest, the only one I liked was the Coach Tatum Studded Tall Tote but at $1000 that’s pricy for Coach – the rest just look like cheap knock offs of other designers. Really dissappointing. Coach used to be such a reliable classic brand with good value for your money.
AMEN to that!
BARF. NOT CUTE. Any of it.
Very disappointing
Just at the point where Coach was starting to get it right, some overzealous person came up with these… Sadly, I can never un-see these bags.
Those creature bags are creepy. I liked the Dakota with the studs. Those Swagger bags were way too busy, and the prices are insane.
Just who is Coach trying to appeal with these bags? Not their customer base so it seems. I guess that there will just be more and more customers going to the outlets for a bag. Those places are packed while I can count the number of people in the mall stores on one hand for the last few months. I guess that they’re all going to Michael Kors because those boutiques stay busy.
Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff…
uninspiring brands, but better than these disasters
You are absolutely right. They are taking the Coach customer base. Coach customers have always seemed to be people that want a good leather bag without a whole lot of bells and whistles.
You’d have to pay me a million bucks to wear those creature bags
Amanda – your team always talks so highly of Coach, and I just don’t get it. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of the team’s aesthetic at all. just as Coach was starting to get it right with the Borough bag, Stuart Verves comes in and makes the ugliest bags I could ever dream up (and then some). I just can’t reconcile you guys liking these with your usual classic/stylish taste.
The Borough bag really was a step in the right direction, though. Unfortunately they took 3 steps back with this collection.
Coach is an advertiser with PB. Of course they will speak highly of the brand.
In fairness, many other brands advertise with PB as well.
I realize this. Most of the brands they discuss here are advertisers. They either advertise or have backlinks to advertisers. But they do push Coach an awful lot. This post should have had ‘sponsored’ at the bottom.
Haha well that explains it. I was wondering why they would even dare to put “adorable” in the title.
Well, yeah adorable was pushing it a tad bit.
I became a fan of Coach during Reed Krakoff’s time, but I think I will pass on this brand for now.. Very dissapointing bags since Stuart Verves took over.
I bought my first Coach (saddle pouch) 35 years ago, and to that added duffle sac, original rambler, and the city bag, which are much loved and in use. In the city in which I lived then during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Coach bags were almost a uniform. During subsequent decades, however, the brand underwent a period of schizophrenia in which they didn’t know what they were anymore and I stopped buying Coach– until the Borough bag. I adore my Borough bag. I do not like those “creatures” either…yuck, but the other bags are cute. I never mind derivatives because they are typically hundreds of dollars less than the originals; but these are a bit pricey for what they are.
I used to love Coach! Now I don’t care for any of their bags! They used to be such classic designs!
Those Gary Baseman monster bags are the ugliest most juvenile thing ever. Event the charms/fobs are ridiculously expensive. But Coach knows something because these items are very popular with those in the Coach forum
I would LOVE to own the Studded Tatum bag, and I like the Swagger Carryall in solid colors. The cartoon ones are not my style at all(and I think we will see them in stores like Marshalls and TJMaxx as overstock), but I think Coach knows they have a young urban customer who will “need” to have one, or several, of those character bags.
I think you are all being mean to Coach. Yes, I too admit they’ve lost their way, but they do have some very classy bags. I’m not into Gary Baseman’s style but the Swagger is promising. I think that Coach still makes bags a lot of us want to carry. I have never seen a Birkin, that looks any different than another. Sorry but for $10,000 each one would have to break the mold. I hate bags with chains; goodbye Chanel. Givenchy, Gucci and Louis Vuitton leather bags are the only appealing designers for me personally. But I would never spend what I spent on my son’s first car on a handbag. I buy Coach, proudly. So maybe these little creatures veer a little off for you, but the brand is still number one overall, for me. And I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way.
oh no, these are horrible. The monsters are creepy, not cute, and the other bags are so overdone.
I like the swagger bag, it’s a nice design and does not remind me of another designer. Coach is coming along fine.
Swagger 20 mettalic match my style. Love it !!!
For the love of everything good and holy, his name is Stuart VEVERS!! And there is more to this collection than Buster LeFauve and Emmanuel Hare Ray. Yes, they are a little out there. But that’s the point. If you don’t like it, it isn’t meant for you. The woman that likes this wants to push the envelope and carry something unexpected. She doesn’t want to carry the same old/same old that’s been on the runways for seasons. She already has it in her closet and wants to move on. Heck, I’m over the sad sack styles Coach has been putting out over the last five years. It’s time to move on, people! If you still want want “classic”, go carry Dooney & Bourke!
Maybe the Dakotah but absolutely nothing else! Those creatures are creepy as hell.
I love you guys but I so disagree with all of you right now! This is the first Coach collection I’ve ever even taken a second look at! I’ve been saving for months to get in on this collection, I think it’s creative and cool! I respect y’all’s opinions, though, more creatures for me 🙂
Agreed, I like the creatures also. They remind me a bit of Fendi’s bag bugs and monster bags, but at a more sane price point… (the bags are fine, but $900 for a keychain?!)
Yeah!! I agree totally I think the bag bugs are okay but not $900 okay! I love the 90’s look and feel of this whole collection 😀
I bought one of the creature bags from colette… I love the creature, but my beef is with the leather and the shoulder strap. The leather is *so* heavy, and then to top it off, the shoulder strap is too long. The bag just ends up bumping the back of my knees when I walk, and if I’m carrying a laptop inside of it that sort of hurts! ):
I was really tempted to buy one but I got cold feet and went with the swagger in all black. The creature bags are so cute but they looked really big for what i’d need in an everyday bag. I’m sorry it’s not working out for you, they are so pretty!
Yeah, I have a 15″ laptop and so it means that my laptop doesn’t fit in basically anything unless they’re *giant*. It seems like every bag just comes up an inch short here or there. My favorite tote is the Smythson tote, which is beautifully constructed though more $$ than Coach. And the inner suede is absolutely decadent, I’m in love (:
I am a grown women I expect something sophisticated for this price. This is a purse for a teen and even my teen daughter thinks it’s awful. Coach is in trouble.
No Mel you are mistaken, there is no way a women will walk into a meeting with client with this on her arm. It’s childish and pushes no envelopes for a sophisticated female. It’s tacky and mark my words it will cost coach in a competitive market they they are already failing in.
The creature bags look like Baby Diaper Bags. Yuck!
OMG I missed the Gary Baseman tote… They are all sold out and too expensive on ebay…
>If you still want want “classic”, go carry Dooney & Bourke!
WELL SAID!
I actually love the creature bags. They might not work for the Western market, but I’m sure they will do wonders for the Japanese market in particular.
