Do you understand the Cannes Film Festival? I’m not sure that I do. On the surface, I can grok that it’s a place where films both American and international are debuted to a critical audience of industry folks, and the best ones are given awards. In actuality, it seems to be something of a festival celebrating being filthy rich and beautiful as much as its a festival celebrating film, and most of the attendees and their mega-yachts and supermodel dates would make the average one-percenter feel like a pauper. And an unattractive one, at that.
Where you find that many famous people and that much excess, you’ll also find a bevy of insanely good handbags. Below, we’ve collected the best from both on and off the red carpets of the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival, and the spoils of the event are about as good as you’d expect. The south of France becomes global paparazzi central for a week or so every year, and everyone brought their best bags out to play.
We’ll start with Sharon Stone, who is the prototypical Cannes celeb – older, blonde, eternally wealthy because of both her career and her relationships. This year, she carried a Valextra Babila Tote. Buy through Barneys for $2,540.
In the same vein as Sharon Stone, model Victoria Silvstedt was all over Cannes carrying an Hermes Birkin.
And then there’s Uma Thurman, debarking Roberto Cavalli’s yacht with and Hermes Kelly Bag.
Completing the Hermes trio, here’s Cate Capshaw carrying both an Hermes Shoulder Birkin and a Chanel Boy Bag.
Capshaw wasn’t the only Cannes attendee to stack her designer day bags – model Petra Nemcova sported both a Dolce & Gabbana Miss Dolce Satchel and a Celine Luggage Tote. Pick up an orange Miss Dolce for $1,995 via farfetch.com.
Considering that she was at the airport heading home from Cannes, Olivia Palermo‘s double-team of a Chloe Alice Satchel and a Louis Vuitton SC Satchel makes more sense. Pick up the Chloe bag for $1,995 via Net-a-Porter and the LV for $4,850 via Louis Vuitton.
During Cannes, the Nice airport is just about the best place on the planet to spot celebs and their bags. Here’s former Spice Girl Melanie Brown carrying a Chanel Classic Flap Bag and wheeling a Louis Vuitton Eole Wheeled Duffel. Pick up your own for $2,210 via Louis Vuitton.
Chinese star Fan Bingbing also hit the airport with LV – she chose a Louis Vuitton Zephyr Suitcase and a Louis Vuitton Vernis Alma Bag. Pick up the suitcase for $3,450 and the bag for $2,000, both via Louis Vuitton.
Carey Mulligan chose a Reed Krakoff Atlantique Tote for her main airport bag, but I spy a Louis Vuitton Epi Keepall down there on her luggage cart (piloted by none other than her own personal Mumford). Pick up the nude version of Carey’s Krakoff bag for $1,490 via Neiman Marcus.
Cameron Diaz, for her part, had someone else deal with her luggage – she stuck to her Saint Laurent Sac Du Jour Tote. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $2,950.
Eva Longoria also chose not-so-basic black for her airport jaunt – her bag was a Chanel Grand Shopping Tote.
Of course, no one beats Dita Von Teese’s airport look, which we covered in-depth earlier this week – her Dolce & Gabbana Miss Dolce Floral Satchel is divine. Grab your own for the sale price of $2,516 via Luisa Via Roma.
Nicole Kidman killed it on the red carpet all week, but her casual Cannes looks were also pretty great – this Armani Embossed Leather Shopper is gorgeous. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $2,480.
Versace can be a bit garish at times, but Kidman makes this Versace Signature Tote look cool and casual. Buy through farfetch.com for $3,428.
Do you know what Rachel Bilson was doing at Cannes? Neither do I. Except carrying a Chloe Elsie Shoulder Bag, of course. Buy through Barneys for $1,095.
Cannes also brings out lots of international actresses and celebs who may not be immediately recognizable to American audiences. Here’s French actress Marilou Berry carrying a Christian Louboutin Faridah Tote outside of her hotel. Pick up a black studded version for $2,395 via Neiman Marcus.
French actress Olga Kurylenko has a total lust-worthy Fendi 2Jours Tote. Pick up the plain black leather version for $2,260 via Neiman Marcus.
Cannes also includes a lot of models who are there to…well, to be beautiful scenery, by all indications. In one of her more casual moments, Alessandra Ambrosio toted a Chloe Marcie Bag. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $1,995.
Australian model Jessica Hart chose this Prada Leather Satchel for her casual time. Shop Prada via Neiman Marcus.
Models are also charged with being red-carpet eye candy in the evenings. Karlie Kloss wore lots of Vuitton, including this Louis Vuitton Tassel Minaudiere.
Cannes also includes a smattering of fashion people, because why not. Vogue Nippon editor Anna Dello Russo paired her black-and-white Balenciaga runway look with a Bulgari Minaudiere in the same colorway. Buy through Bulgari for $5,700.
At a French event with copious red carpets, you didn’t think we were going to go without a Chanel Lego Clutch, did you? This one was carried by French actress Astrid Berges Frisbey.
Actress Berenice Bejo accented a more conservative red carpet look with an Olympia Le-Tan Book Clutch. Pick up a similar book clutch for $1,870 via Net-a-Porter.
We might all be tempted to focus on Justin Timberlake, but take a moment to appreciate Jessica Biel‘s intricate Marchesa Lily Embroidered Clutch. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $3,295.
No major red carpet event of the past year is complete without Jennifer Lawrence wearing Dior, and at Cannes, she paired it with a Charlotte Olympia Pandora Box Clutch. Pick up the red version for $975 via Net-a-Porter.
