The Row Expands Its Handbag Line with (Slightly) More Accessible Prices

It’s been clear from the jump that affordable bags were never going to be The Row’s stock-in-trade. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have built an upstart powerhouse by using the finest materials available to reinvent basics ranging from black blazers to cable-knit sweaters, and the duo’s $34,000 alligator backpack launched a trend almost single-handedly. Now, the company appears to be expansion-minded, with a new lineup of slightly less expensive bags that could pull in a larger customer base.

To be clear, these bags are not anything you’d call inexpensive, but when you keep in mind that The Row’s first line of bags was anchored by a leather day tote that cost in excess of $5,000, a bunch of new designs under $3,000 is worth noticing. The least expensive of these new bags use pebbled and textured leathers; if you want buttery softness, you’re going to have to dish out more money.

Some of the designs, including a less-expensive take on the brand’s popular backpack, also feature The Row’s first bit of external branding: a coin-sized metal disk with a small TR on it. Check out some of the bags below or shop Neiman Marcus’ full selection.

love the featured bag but there are soooooooo many more affordable and quality versions of these bags on the market right now.

Not sure about the coin logo. Kind of reminds me of the Tory Burch logo.

I thought they had already reduced their prices because the last few years I have been seeing a lot more under $3000 bags from the company. Not to mention, you can find so many of their bags on sale. Other than the uber-luxurious pieces, the Row bags haven’t really caught on. I do think they haven’t quite managed to capture the essence of their great RTW.

This is very underwhelming, but I feel that way towards The Row in general.

I’ll be the odd one out here… I tried on a couple of their bags at Harrod’s a couple months ago. The leather is divine and the design is incredibly functional… Perhaps it’s the emphasis of functionality over form in a way that the design becomes maybe a little too understated for a lot of people. After trying on the bags, I’m a total convert. I would gladly spend that much for these bags, the quality is superior to so many high end designers.

That white satchel 12 looks delicious! 🙂

I guess that I’m not The Row consumer in both their clothing line or their accessories. I just don’t get the spending the money on things that look ho-hum.

Why do Celine bags which seem so simple is delectable. Cannot say the same for the Row. And what a hideous logo!

I think the Olsens are catering to a niche of moneyed people who do not like to flaunt their wealth. And they are winning their clientele with fantastic quality.

The grain and colour on the first bag is tdf!
