Throwback Thursday: Celebs and Their Celine Bags

A look back at the many C(é)line bags stars loved in the 2010s

Long before Hedi Slimane dropped the é in Celine, British designer Phoebe Philo completely redefined fashion for women with her use of tonal colors and a keen eye for minimalist designs. The year was 2008 and Philo would go on to design for Celine for a decade, producing handbag hit after handbag hit in the meantime. Though one of her most notable designs is the iconic (and still beloved) Luggage Tote, #oldceline fans know that Philo’s legacy at Celine is about more than just one iconic carryall. Like many of us, stars fell in love with Philo’s stylish, yet functional designs, and if there’s one thing to note it’s that Philo was extremely good at designing silhouettes that kept fans coming back for more. Like us, stars were extremely brand loyal to Celine during the Philo era as you’ll see below, filling their collections and closets with multiple bags by the beloved designer. Take a look at the many Celine Bags of celebs during the Philo-era (with a bonus that pre-dates her thrown in there too!).

Now, I want a Box Bag.

Megs Mahoney Dusil

I’ve always wanted a Box Bag and always been a bit bummed I didn’t get one!

butterbox

Check out The Real Real for the Celine Box Bag, I always see quite a few on consignment.

Julia

Those box bags though…

On another note, I really like Dakota’s Blade bag too.

Sajid Bin Mohammad

The Celine Watch Me Work is a gorgeous bag nobody knows about. Really hope they bring it back.

Victoria

Bummed I missed out on the Blade bag…

Lori

This post makes me really miss old Celine.

Jennifer Paradise

I have always loved the Trapeze! The resale market is calling me …

Totally want to reach through the computer screen and adjust the placement of whatever Chrissy Teigan is carrying in her bag though that’s making it pull like that! Save the Trapeze! 🙂

Kimberly

almost all of my favorite bags were designed by Phoebe Philo whether it was from when she was at Chloe (Paddington, Silverado, Edith and so many more) or when she left and went to Celine (the Luggage Tote, Trapeze, etc) and worked her magic there. She’s a true design genius. I still have almost all of them and love them just as much today as I did the day they were purchased.

These women have all the money in the world and yet they dress like tramps when they go out in public. Whatever happened to simple & elegant? No no, lets just look like slobs. This is definitely an American thing. This goes out to everyone who leaves the house thinking sweatpants are appropriate public attire. Please try. They wear $1000+ bags and $10 sweat pants, not sexy.

Becky

This made me laugh! Where specifically do you reside? I’ve been to Paris, several times, London, Italy, etc. I saw casually dressed women in sweats, but also clothes that I would never be seen wearing in public! Take a walk around the Eiffel Tower and tell me about “tramps”, which by the way no-one uses this term, anymore! ?

ZAC

Becky, your correct. But, Tramp means Vagrant in UK English, like Bum. Obviously, not a nice comment but different definition.

TKS

Well then don’t come to America for our “American thing” & you won’t be so triggered. How about you do your country, and we can do ours. Also, not everyone’s goal is to look “sexy” when leaving the house. So you say they look like “tramps” but also “not sexy”. So ….how can we dress to please you, oh great man? Just a LITTLE slutty?

ZAC

Is this a serious comment? ; ‘Don’t come to America’ ‘Do your Country’? – Dan maybe from Europe where ‘Tramp’ means Vagrant not Slutty. Actually, this is the definition from the Oxford Dictionary.

Whereas, I did not agree with his comment I disagree with this comment much more. I believe America has the ideology of freedom of speech. But telling people to ‘stay’ in their countries is just plain wrong, prejudiced and ignorant.

People ‘Are’ staying in their countries due to Covid: Forbes: A $400 billion decline in travel spending in the U.S. this year will translate into a total economic loss of $910 billion in economic output in 2020. – This is due to people staying in their countries.

TKS

Asinine comment. Yes, if someone speaks of our country in a bigoted way, ABSOLUTELY stay the f out. We don’t need you. Especially when you are calling women in the USA “tramps” because dressing like “tramps” is an “American thing”. We don’t need this level of a*hole coming over to objectify the women here. Implying that women who dress the way THEY WANT is “not sexy” is also sexist, because it implies that we dress for the approval of men. You missed this one all around buddy. 100% fail. And also a “f*g” in the Oxford dictionary is a cigarette, but I am pretty sure we don’t walk around using that word either.

ZAC

I think a little bit of seeing the world would help you immensely. Your more than welcome to come to Europe anytime.

TKS

I’ve lived there, and 2 other continents as well. All good, thanks.

L W

Please dont judge others clothing and fashion choices and say they look like “tramps” and “slobs”. Its to a nice thing to say. No one is obliged to dress the way you want them to or the way you think is right. As for appropriate, well your appropriate isn’t necessarily someone elses appropriate

Samantha

If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. It’s a quaint American saying.

Melissa

Lol what none of them are dressed like tramps?

Guilly

I want a box bag too!!

william

i still love old celine to this day, the luggage tote is still so iconic and STILL one of my favorite bags to carry! this blog post really makes me want a box bag though, they’re so classy and timeless.

Ese

best bags forever

KangKangKang

Adore the edge. Favorite bag of Selina Meyer on VEEP.

Irma Segovia

Yes! She had a red one and a black one if I remember correctly. Celine and Lanvin.

psny15

Love this post but can you please do one post without a kartrashian?

Chelsea Girl

Oh Phoebe Philo, Oh the Celine Trapeze Bag, I really miss the good old days when beautiful bags were worth their price tags. Thanks PG for the Nostalgia. Badly needed it today!

Mamlili's bodyguard

Once I saw Kourtney I just knew that their would be that one person in the comments stating how much they hate the Kardashians I mean why can’t women just be happy for another woman’s success or just let her be happy I peace like do you think men are crying about Tiger Woods or even Tristan Thompson lol

Irene

Far too many of these throwback segments.
I personally go on here to see new handbags; not outdated celebrity photos with old bags that I wouldn’t buy these days.

Kate

I still like the box bag. And that’s about it. These just haven’t aged well, I think.
