The one thing I love about trends (and fashion as a whole) is that they can be interpreted a million different ways depending on the person. An individual’s personal style can say a lot about who they are or even their mood on any given day. My style changes day to day, but it definitely gives off a mix of casual downtown vibes with a twist. One thing I’m always cognizant of is looking put together no matter what it is that I’m wearing. Even if I’m in sneakers or athleisure I never want to look sloppy. Though what’s on the inside is incredibly important, what a person is wearing says a lot about them. So what does it mean when someone wants to wear Dumbo on their purse? Forgive me if I’m wrong, and maybe I’m reading too far into this, but to me I would feel a little too juvenile wearing a character from a children’s movie on my purse. I know Disney is well loved by many women, but I’ve just never been drawn to it so much so that I’d want to wear it on my body.

I get it — life can be incredibly challenging and tough at times, and maybe, just maybe wearing Dumbo on your purse brings you a little bit of joy, but what at what price? I guess maybe for some people a Dumbo purse is all in good fun, and like I mentioned above, maybe I’m looking too far into the meaning of a Dumbo bag, but what I do know is that it is definitely not for me. First Coach released their newest Disney x Coach collection featuring Dumbo and I was not surprised, being they have done collaborations with Disney in the past. Then, Loewe released images of their collaboration with Disney and my jaw hit the floor. Loewe is a luxury brand known for their unique approach to minimalism, and to me, seeing Dumbo on Loewe’s usually clean and classic designs was a bit shocking. Whether on a luxury brand’s bag or a contemporary brand’s bag I just don’t want to wear Dumbo on my purse. What about you? Does a Dumbo purse speak to your personal style?
And why not? After all it’s just a selection and for limited time I presume.
I love the mickey mouse classic on any bag and i love 101 dalmatians also but beyond that il pass
I think some people just like to have a little quirky style. Either they go all out or they incorporate the quirkyness with a “fun detail”. Because they think it is either cute, cool or just fun. Each to their own. 🙂
How dull would this world be if we all liked the same things? This isn’t for me, but I do wear items that people have commented negatively on its aesthetics. If you dress frivolously, it’s juvenile. If you dress seriously, it’s boring. Celebrate both uniqueness and shared interests alike.
OOOOOH I would SO carry all of those bags! Despite my age (40) I still love Disney Babies, Mickey Mouse and Dumbo. 😀
I never enjoyed the Dumbo movie, Snow White, or the Minnie/Mickey characters all that much, so the Loewe and Coach collabs leave me saying “meh”.
In general I wouldn’t put cartoon characters on something that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars. But never say never; if a designer I liked collaborated with a cartoon I really loved and the design was good, I quite possibly would. People like different things and the right character on the right bag can portray a special mix of nostalgia and insouciance with luxurious flair. Gucci or Givenchy, if you’re reading this, do a Hey Arnold! collab and I’ll be first in line.
I would rather wear Dumbo on my bag over a tie-dye bag any day LOL!
I have a few Disney Coach charms hanging off my bags. Will now go check out what Loewe has. =D
I love Disney and I am far from being a child. I wanted a bag with my favorite Disney characters that was not made for a child so I painted my own on a vintage Coach bag. I went on to paint three more. Lol!
Awesome job.
Wow, your so talented!!! The bags are so pretty. Really impressed ?
The Bambi one looks incredibly similar to one that coach auctioned off in 2016
I would consider that a compliment since her artistry is as good or even better then the Coach one.
Thank you Candee!
This bag was actually my inspiration that got me started. I was unable to bid on it so I painted one myself. Lady and the Tramp is the the moment we think of in the movie as well as the Dalmatian family. Thumper and Flower are from two different scenes. Thumper was spinning on the ice and Flower was meeting Bambi.
What sort of paint do you use?
Acrylic followed by a semi glossy sealant.
Thanks!
These are incredibly beautiful! My granddaughter loves “Princesses” and if you take orders let me know! She would adore it and carry it everywhere!
I hope that my comment wasn’t misinterpreted and maybe I’m overthinking it. I meant that when someone, like yourself, paints so beautifully there is a market for painted bags that everyone could enjoy. Unfortunately, she is less than impressed with my stick figures, but your work is to be admired. 🙂
Thank you so much for your nice comments! I am thinking of maybe setting up an Etsy shop. I think I need to paint a few more as samples. I don’t want to sell the ones I’ve already painted. Also I purchased most of the vintage Coach bags from eBay and it’s hard to find what you want in good condition at a good price.
I understand! Hopefully, you will open a shop on Etsy!
Fabulous!!!
Love the colors on the Bambi bag 🙂
You painted these? Amazing!!!
Yes, I did! Thank you so much! I have also painted four more that are not Disney, but my own designs. Here’s a photo of the rest? The
fish are hard to photograph because I used metallic paint for an under water effect. I plan on another one soon. Just have to decide what to paint.
A flamingo would be perfect.
You go girl!
I’m 35 and bought the Coach Dumbo camera bag AND tote 😛
I really love quirky bags, especially when they’re well made. They do bring me joy, because a bag also works as a kind of grown-up security blanket for me… A shrink would be happy with that, but I guess we could all go and psychoanalyse why we love handbags sooo much…
This makes me think about this post by Amanda : https://www.purseblog.com/handbags/8-reasons-handbags-are-our-favorite-way-to-treat-ourselves/
Lol the title made me laugh heartily
I personally don’t want Disney characters on my high end bags either. I grew up one hour from Disney so I instantly think of tourists!
Real talk: Don’t buy it. I don’t want Dumbo on my bag either, but was writing a blog post worth the time? Let people have joy in the things they like, especially if they are harmless and sweet like Dumbo.
I love the Disney X Coach collaborations!!! I also loved their Snoopy collaboration! In fact, today I’m carrying the Coach Market Tote with the Snow White patches. I think its important to not take things like handbags too seriously, because if you really think about it, spending the amount of money we do on bags can seem ridiculous! But, I love bags, so I spend my money. And I love Disney. I love the fun of it all and I love carrying something that makes me smile, my son smile and those I work with smile too! If it’s not your jam, that’s cool. I won’t judge you for buying your tie-dye bag, don’t judge me for my Disney bag. 😉
I love these painted bags. They are really well done. People should wear Disney character bags if they want to. However, I am very torn about this because I have trouble with a high end fashion house deciding that Disney characters on women’s luxury bags is a good business decision. There is a double standard. They would never do this to men’s bags/briefcases because it would be considered too childish. What does this say about the attitude toward women? We are not girls. There is too much marginalization of women in the workforce and elsewhere in more ways than we can count.
I totally agree! Women are marginalized and these Disney type themes are not on men’s bags. When I see bags with these or similar themes I wonder “why are they targeting women” because the majority of women would not carry them. An example are the Prada crossbody’s with swinging monkey’s on them which are ridiculous and demeaning. Fashion houses seem to think that “women will carry anything”, but that is simply not true, IMO.
I can’t speak to the Prada bag, but women ARE buying these bags and they are selling out.
not buy per se but I can completely appreciate the flavor they want to bring and love the loewe version where they still adhere to their clean, minimalism DNA with a side of quirkiness. People say they won’t buy these bags until all bloggers/influencers carry one in their arms and they suddenly become so trendy and chic. I think we can still wear them without being sloppy, think slouchy textured sweater with A line skirt, all white, plus heels and a dumbo clutch, yum!
I can’t stand Disney collaborations. I get why Coach does it. It’s a contemporary brand with accessible price points. It’s also an American brand. But Loewe?????!!!!! That’s a cheap sell out.
Loewe is not different to Gucci with Mickey or Givenchy with Bambi. And, what is this about an American brand????
Then, Givenchy must do Asterix collaborations????
Who likes Dumbo is lucky to have a fantastic leather item with your favorite cartoon.
Agree. People who like Disney characters on their bags can happily shop away. I don’t like them. I don’t have to.
If I ever went Disney, I would go ALL the way Disney. The Gucci severed Mickey head is the one for me
To each their own, of course. But I wouldn’t buy leathergoods with Disney characters on them.
Nope! These are awful but then again, it’s coach. What can we expect? ?
The Loewe Dumbo collection is not painted, is made with leather marquetry technique. For Disney/Dumbo fans who likes hight quality items. Love
Just saw that Gucci has a Mickey Mouse bag – 3D Printed plastic for $4500. No thank you to any of this.
I love Loewe and as soon as I saw this collaboration, I wanted to buy the Goya backpack. For me it’s a piece of art especially the way Dumbo was not simply painted on the bag, and the color is right for me. Also in my eyes, Dumbo in Loewe bag looks more polished than the one on Coach’s. Sadly, the Loewe Dumbo bag is very difficult to find in the US and is not available anywhere in any store. If I was in Asia I would go out and buy it immediately. If I carry a bag, I use it because I like it and I would not care if others would judge or think it is juvenile, nor would I judge others. It is the personal preference.
Love the blue colour and design…Don’t love Dumbo tho…If i would buy a loewe and a elephant this you’de the one
I wouldn’t buy a Disney bag or a coach bag or a Disney coach bag. I don’t like either.
Not Dumbo per se, as that movie has always saddened me, but select Disney characters as a purse charm, maybe.
They aren’t anymore ridiculous than the chanel bags of current and past collections…. Beach balls, the crazy hoop bag, milk carton, clear cassette clutch etc etc.
Never, ever would I wear a bag with a Dumbo or a Mickey Mouse on it. This stuff is for diaper bags, maybe.
I would wear it.
Love these Dumbo items. I’m not really into Disney characters but these Dumbo numbers are a yes. They’re well made and grown up cute.
