Given our current economic climate, I, like so many others in our community, won’t be making any big purchases for a bit. While I’d like to be funny and joke here about the fact that I wouldn’t have anywhere to wear a new bag anyway, the truth is that shopping right now (and in the foreseeable future) is on the back-burner. While many of you already vowed to shop your own closets this year, some of you may also be using this time to re-evaluate your collections overall.
I did a big clean out last spring and sold 3 bags, but with everything going on in the world, I’ve mentally been assessing my current collection. After all, bags are just ‘stuff’ and if they don’t bring us joy we probably shouldn’t be keeping them around.
For the most part, my collection of handbags does spark joy within me, and I still feel a rush when I take most of them out of their dust bags to be used. I use all of my bags and I don’t have all that many bag-buying regrets sitting around (I’ve parted with them already), but I’ve still been re-evaluating my pieces. If I had to part with one bag from my collection right now, resale value aside, which would it be?
The answer for me is fairly easy, and it may surprise you. I’d easily part ways with my Black Gucci GG Marmont Flap Bag. While I like this bag, I really do, I’m just not in love with it. I still gets regular use from me though, as it’s incredibly easy to wear being that it’s black and can be dressed up or down. Yet at the same time, I feel as if I use it just to use it. It’s sort of neither here nor there for me, if that makes sense, and I would much prefer an everyday black bag that I adore versus one I just sort of tolerate.
I have nothing against this bag, in fact it’s hard to say if I actually regret buying it, because at the time I really wanted it and I enjoyed the rush of using it for a while. I would even still recommend this bag to someone who desperately wanted it—it’s under $2K, which these days is a plus, and additionally it’s functional and fashionable, yet for me it just doesn’t make my heart flutter when I’m pulling her out for use after a couple of weeks in storage.
I’ve actually debated selling this bag as it is in excellent condition, but I would only do so if I were to replace it with a similar style since I don’t own another everyday black bag. Financially it doesn’t make sense right now (and still didn’t prior to all of this) as I would have to put in a lot of extra cash, or sell two things, to replace the hole in my collection. If I could make an even trade work though, I know exactly what I’d buy—a Bottega Veneta Padded Casette Bag.
What about you guys? Whether you’d do this for a bit of extra cash or instead of purchasing a new bag outright, would make it more of a swap, which bag in your collection would you say goodbye to right now?
I adore my AW Rockie but I just cannot wear it because it. is. so. darn. heavy. My neck and shoulders get super sore whether I’m hand-holding by the top handle or using the shoulder strap. And AW resale value is quite poor now so I’m just sitting on it and periodically taking it out of my closet to gawk at. Too bad, especially since the bag is quite bulky when stuffed and stored properly :/
I had one as well. I found that the quality was subpar and it was way too heavy. I love the aesthetic but I don’t need the extra weight. I got mine for a steal so I was able to donate it without feeling too badly.
I had one and sold it for that very reason. I didn’t mind the resale value because I had bought mine on the second hand market.
Ah, the Marmont flap, pretty but already looking dated. The logo, the hardware, the quilting, there’s something toylike and insipid about it. Would advise against the padded cassette, such a trend looking piece, even more so than the pouch. Much prefer the regular cassette, current but more classic.
Glad I never bought one. I’ve read a lot of Buyer’s Regret regarding the Marmont flap on the Forum. I agree it looks dated. I’d like to see Gucci revive the Soho line. I have a few and they still look fresh.
I still love the Marmont. It’s lightweight especially for the size. Holds a ton, even an iPad for work. The price is very reasonable for luxury. I will wear it proud regardless if anyone thinks it’s passe’
I still have a Gucci SoHo Chain flap in nude! It needs to be cleaned unfortunately but always loved that bag too.
A black Marc by Marc Jacobs leather bag I used to use for work. We have relaxed our dress code in our office so it doesn’t get much mileage anymore. It is also a heavy bag and I would prefer to replace it with a lightweight bag.
LV neverfull mm. I rarely have need for a bag this big. Not sure why I bought it other than a friend purchased and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I use maybe once a year and it’s usually left in the car. Don’t use it for travel bc it’s open. Don’t use for work bc it gets too much attention….like oooo somebody had a good year…that kind of stuff which I don’t like.
I would part ways with my mini rectangular chanel bag in pink/biege colour. I just never reach out for this bag.
If it’s in good condition, I’m sure you could get a nice return on this bag. The minis in a popular color really hold their value.
Thanks Megan, I will give it one more go for summer 2020. If I’m still not reaching out for it by the start of fall then I will let it go.
Email me if you want to let it go
Unfortunately this topic is top of mind for me right now (and I am sure for many!). I think it would be my Damier ebene neverfull. DE is my least favorite of the LV prints and it doesn’t spark joy for me like my other bags. At this rate I’m not sure I’ll be selling anything though because I’m assuming quotes from resellers are especially low at the moment.
You’re honestly better off selling it on your own at this point, especially on a site on Poshmark or locally. a DE neverfull would sell fairly easily locally.
My bag collection consists of contemporary and 4 designer bags. If I had to sell one of the designer ones, it would be my Chloe Faye. I still really like it but it’s less versatile than the other three. Plus, I got it for a steal preloved so I wouldn’t feel that bad about not recouping much for it.
Papillon LV.. and a wapity case and a multi zippy wallet.
I would part ways with my Chanel Just Mademoiselle Tote in lambskin. It was my first Chanel bag and such an impulse purchase that I regret. I think I’ve only used it like a handful of times in the 7 or 8 years I’ve owned it. I’d also part ways with my Dior Diorama bag because I just don’t love it, even though its my go-to city travel bag.
I’m loving the padded cassette! I fully support that trade 🙂
I would part away with my Neverful in DA – I bought it 7 years ago and it’s not my vibe anymore. Sadly it isn’t in a good condition (I wore it A LOT). I’ll get rid of my Saint Laurent Baby SDJ in white embossed leather as well – cute, but not versatile and not practical at all. Also a Givenchy Antigona pochette in grey embossed leather, I’ve worn it twice in two years and it’s defo not my style.
With the way my head works these days, it would be easier to say which bags would stay as there are so much less things staying than going. All of my Longchamp bags and items are going, so I will be clearing one whole brand away from my life for good. That’ll teach them to ruin people’s bags and be smug about their work…
