In fashion, another phenomenon was quietly taking hold: Proenza Schouler’s PS1 bag.
Introduced by Proenza Schouler founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the PS1 arrived at a moment when the handbag landscape was dominated by more structured, conspicuous silhouettes. Its appeal was almost deliberately understated.
Borrowing from the proportions and practicality of a classic school satchel, the bag offered a certain effortlessness—a downtown nonchalance that felt distinctly Proenza Schouler, and distinctly of its time. Even its name nodded to its origins, referencing the naming conventions of New York City’s public schools.
The Bag That Defined a Moment
The PS1 quickly became a defining accessory of the late 2000s and early 2010s, evolving over the years through an extensive range of sizes, shapes, colors, materials, and exotic skins. Yet its staying power was never simply about versatility. The PS1 captured something larger: a shift toward fashion that felt personal rather than precious, polished without appearing overly considered.
Now, as Proenza Schouler reintroduces the PS1 in 2026, the bag arrives in a very different fashion landscape—but perhaps at a moment when its original proposition feels more relevant than ever.
Introduced on the runway at the label’s Spring 2027 show, the next era of the PS1 is here, all thanks to Rachel Scott, who took over the brand’s helm a year ago after its founders left for Paris to run Loewe.
Meet the PS1 Walker
The next era of the PS1 is softer and more relaxed, but equally cool and distinctly Proenza. Dubbed the PS1 Walker, the relaunched PS1 was designed in collaboration with Reed Krakoff, a three-time CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year and Coach’s former creative director.
The Walker, which takes its name from Proenza Schouler’s original downtown studio on Walker Street in New York, is not only a nod to Proenza’s past but also a love letter to its future. With fashion’s cyclical nature now reverting to the trends of the late 2000s and early 2010s, there’s no better time for the PS1 to make its return.
A Familiar Icon, Reimagined
Still, its refresh feels more contemporary and modern, with cleaner, more fluid lines, a slouchier body, and the PS1’s signature metal flip-lock. Refined, but equally distinctive, the Walker, which is made in Italy, will debut in three sizes: mini ($1,650), medium ($2,090), and large ($2,590). Colors spotted on the runway were classic black, white, red, citron yellow, soft blue, and brown suede.
