Love It or Leave It? The Triumphant Revival of Tie-Dye

Who needs florals for spring when you have tie-dye?

You don’t have to be a fashion expert to know that tie-dye is one of the biggest trends of 2019. (I know, weird.) A quick Google search brings up dozens of articles from publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, all declaring the triumphant return of your favorite childhood print. And if you’re wondering, there are many theories as to why tie-dye is back in such a major way, with fashion houses like Prada, Proenza Schouler, and Stella McCartney implementing it into their most recent collections.

That explains why you’ve probably seen a tie-dye item here and there in the last few months, be it on bags, blouses, or shoes. Whether or not you’re a supporter, it looks like the trend is here to stay – at least through the end of the year.

Even though Beyoncé is an alleged tie-dye supporter, I’m still weary about saying yes to the trend myself. I’m more of a neutral gal, and tie-dye just screams ‘Look at me!’ – which I’m not totally comfortable with.

I’ll let you make a judgement call on 2019’s tie-dye movement. How do you feel about the trend overall? Does it evoke a happy feeling from your childhood? Hm, what about a painfully awkward memory from 4th grade summer camp? Yeah, that’s more like it – at least for me. I can sort of understand and appreciate a light and subtle tie-dye sweater or blouse, but I’m not so sure how I feel about spending a couple thousand dollars on a bright multicolored bag. But hey, that’s just me. If you’ve got the extra cash and are looking to splurge, adding a tie-dye piece into your collection may be fun and flirty.

I scoured the web for all the latest and greatest tie-dye purses from an army of brands. (Prada and Chloé, included!) What do you think? Love it or leave it?

Robert Goode

Why, in the name of Satan?

Lina Lee

No to all of the bags. Leave it.

Jaime

I like the Chloe bag in picture #4 it might be able to make it through this horrible trend.

circafashion

i agree, also like the python clutch

WEST LEE

Yes. Its only nice bag in the list.

Kat

It’s not my style, but to each his own. Someone young and trend-conscious enough will buy these bags. On another note, the giant C on that Chloé bag is so jarring …

realitygreene

I don’t mind tie dye, but all of these bags are hideous.

Bryan Lepe

I think out of all of them, Chloe did it the best and they’re small enough to pull it off. Leave it up to Michael Kors to ruin a trend though.

Sparky

I like #3

Candee

Not for me because it’s too seasonal and trendy. However, for those who love it and have disposable income then enjoy!

MamaSleepy

I wore tie dye in the 60s. It’s my understanding one ought not wear trendy items the 2nd time around. And besides, my budget rejects short-lived, trendy bags this expensive. ¯_(?)_/¯

Kenzie

The Tom Ford tie-dye job looks like cow fur…

Jerri R

For using once or twice and tossing on the ‘donation’ pile? Sure hook me up. Who cares about rainy-day savings ;P

Madame1

No, no, no. These bags will look dated very quickly.

Master Green

The bags from Chloé and Tom Ford are “okay.” The rest… not so much.

Aliza Zibkoff

Let’s not confuse tie dye with ombré or iridescent. Ombré, iridescent very sophisticated. Tye die; raggedy, grungy, hippy look from the 60s – Not cool – at least to me.

Caryn Sappelli

Life should be colorful and fun, and the 2 Chloe and 2 Prada bags are definitely that! I love those because black is my neutral then I add pops of color with bags or scarves. Maybe it’s my background and time down in the village at Parsons School of Design in NYC….Or the result of living in the fashion black hole known as KY.
