Gucci Celebrates Lunar New Year With a Special Capsule Collection

Featuring the famous Japanese anime character Doraemon

Each year, just as the world has begun to settle in from the December holidays and start to the new year, designers begin to release special capsule collections in celebration of the Lunar New Year. While typically associated with Chinese New Year, the Lunar New Year differs in that it isn’t only observed in China, it’s celebrated across other countries in Asia too. The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is traditional to many east Asian countries. This year, it begins on February 12 and celebrations will mark the year of the Ox.

Over the last few years luxury brands have capitalized on this important time in Asian culture, creating special capsule collections, which pay homage to the holiday in some way. This year to celebrate Lunar New Year, Gucci has released a special capsule collection to commemorate the Year of the Ox. The color red is often associated with the Lunar New Year as it symbolizes good fortune and joy, and Gucci chose to subtly incorporate the color within its Lunar New Year capsule. The collection features pop icon Doraemon, which is an iconic figure in Japanese comics (which are called manga) and anime.

The collection, which was imagined by Alessandro Michele, coincides with the manga’s 50th anniversary and features the Doraemon over Gucci’s iconic GG motif finished with a deep red leather trim. The collection includes both RTW and accessories for men and women. As for the bags, the capsule includes new versions of iconic silhouettes and prices range from $830 to $5,800. Check out bags from collection below and shop now via Gucci.

I think the cartoon guy is adorable. The only issue that I have with something like this, although fun, who wants to spend that much money on a fad?

Sheila (Maddy Loves)

Not a fad. Doraemon has been around since the 80s or 90s. A lot of luxury-loving people grew up with Doraemon and its a classic. I know people who bought items from this collection because it’s so nostalgic.

Timothy

Love Doraemon….might even get a scarf for nostalgia purposes. Too expensive for what it is….

Laura

I saw this on the Gucci site last night. I have no idea who this “cartoon guy” is, but it’s ridiculous that any adult would purchase a designer bag with a cartoon character on it. It seems like a latent response to an unfulfilled childish need.

Sheila (Maddy Loves)

Doraemon is super famous in Asia. It’s like Hello Kitty. I’m an adult and I would 100% buy a designer handbag with Hello Kitty on it.

Timothy

It’s not part of my culture so it must be latent response to an unfulfilled childish need. Mom! We have a psychologist here!

Sonya B.

Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Pluto, etc. is part of my culture, but I wouldn’t purchase any designer bags with these “characters” on them. This is part of my childhood, not my adulthood.

Jenna Zimmer

Everyone knows adults aren’t allowed to like cute things!!!! Thats for KIDS!! I am a MATURE adult who cannot have FUN with my fashion! Classic pieces ONLY!!!

Justice

I agree with you 100%. I was visiting Gucci a few weeks ago and the sales staff was pushing the Donald Duck series… Although Donald was part of my childhood and remains a beloved character… I wouldn’t want his face on a pair of $800 sneakers. ?????

Timothy

Good for you. Your culture doesn’t integrate your childhood into your adulthood. That’s YOUR culture. You are not the center of other people’s universe or culture. Someone’s logic is thick.

Sonya B.

Calm down! I’m not implying that I’m the “center of other people’s universe or culture”. How arrogant and “thick” of you to suggest it! ?

Timothy

Called out and triggered lol

Justice

Nope.

“While typically associated with Chinese New Year, the Lunar New Year differs in that it isn’t only observed in China, it’s celebrated across other countries in Asia too. ” Yes, but Japan does not celebrate Lunar New Year, so Gucci effed up by putting a Japanese character in a collection for Lunar New Year.

Soy Sheep

Japan does traditionally celebrate Lunar New Year. They have changed their new year to match with the Gregorian calendar but many places in Japan still hold that tradition.

mishiro_san

Isn’t Doraemon also suppose to be like a cat too so I don’t get why they are using him to celebrate the ox

Cindy

No, just no.

Marcy697

Cartoons on designer bags just doesn’t speak to me.

Tom

Well this is far better than latest LV men’s collection in my opinion.
Actually I prefer light brown color Daraemon Cow pattern than this.

Tana

Are we going to get that ceramic Ox when we buy this collection? Because that the only way we can associate this collection to Luna New Year.
It maybe the easiest collection for them. I mean you don’t have to create or design anything new just put a Doraemon sticker on it. Ha!

Tania K

Ive said it before and I will say it again…all good putting something like this on a Coach bag as they have form with this kind of thing…but to me it cheapens Gucci.

Nobita

As I grew up with Daraemon so I am quite impressed by Gucci to produce those collection but there is no relation to cerebrate Chinese New Year as Doraemon is a “Cat “ and not a Owl ?
But I know that Daraemon has been very popular in China and they are the nation would spend tons of money!! Hahaha
However I would like to find out the reason for why Gucci has decided to use Daraemon.

Jenna Zimmer

I love Doraemon and its a cool idea, but I think they could have been more creative than just plastering him on top of the Gucci monogram. I think they could have played with his iconic features more, like his pouch and bell collar.

Rio

I agree with you Jenna. Loewe did very well with Totoro( another well known Japanese Anime )as their latest collaboration piece. I like the way how they used individual elements from that anime. Wish Gucci did same thing.
